Different, not broken

The world often feels rigged. And this episode is a wake-up call to recognize the barriers that exist for those who don’t fit the traditional mold. In this episode, which is a kind of tribute to my dear departed Dad, I recount some powerful lessons from the man who was a brilliant psychiatrist and my biggest champion. He taught me that if something feels off about the environment you’re in, it probably is—and it’s absolutely hella-not your fault. We dare to break into the uncomfortable truth that many workplaces are designed for a very specific demographic, leaving neurodivergent individuals, particularly those on the autism spectrum, feeling excluded. I share three stories in which my Dad imparted to me more than my fair share of his wisdom, and I'm hoping you to can feel empowered. You'll learn that we can advocate for ourselves and others to create a more inclusive work culture. Ask Mr. Biggs is an advice podcast that has been repurposing actual talk radio phone calls (off and on) since 2006. Mr. Biggs dishes out radio advice to the citizens of the Greater Tri-County area. All phone calls were real talk-radio callers - just edited and tweaked to make them a little more... odd. Calls are borrowed from publically available broadcast talk radio shows, then edited and placed into new - and sometimes amusing - context. For those of you who have not yet had the pleasure of meeting him, Mr. Biggs is a local businessman, entrepreneur, and man-about-town. To say the least, he is a Tri-County fixture. If you happen to attend a local function such as the Semi-Annual Bicycle Safety Rodeo, the Downtown Cilantro Festival, or the Summer Car Hop and Hot Sauce-tacular, most likely Mr. Biggs is close at hand. You can’t miss his hearty laugh, his hip and stylish tracksuits, or his trademark horn-rimmed glasses. As a community service to the public, Mr. Biggs hosts a local radio talk show during which he happily dispenses straight-forward, no-nonsense advice on a variety of everyday problems. Listeners call or e-mail Mr. Biggs’ program with questions about anything and everything: electronics, cooking, etiquette, personal hygiene, automotive repair, affairs of the heart, etc. No topic is off limits. If it puzzles or perplexes, confuses or confounds, Mr. Biggs can figure it out. So don’t delay, download today. And enjoy the wonderful wit and wisdom of Mr. Biggs.
