So, we’re asking ourselves what comes next? Do we simply adapt our titles, or is there something deeper and more sustainable we can build on our own terms? Dave’s story will resonate with anyone who has experienced the unpredictability of layoffs or economic downturns, and who wants to take ownership of their skills in a way that no external force can take away. We explore his decision to focus on a specific pain point so many organizations face—running better meetings. As we discuss, most companies struggle with turning meetings into true vehicles for alignment and action, even though many of us in the agile world might see this as basic skill. Dave explains how he carved out a niche for himself by honing and packaging up his unique facilitation approach, which he calls the “Frame, Flow, and Follow-Through” system. “Non-conformity” is a loaded word. Conformity feels safe. It’s comforting to look around, see everyone else doing the same thing, and assume it’s the right path. But comfort rarely leads to success or fulfillment. Think about the people you genuinely admire—the ones whose careers and lives you’d love to emulate. Chances are, these people aren’t rule followers; they’re true originals. They’re not concerned with fitting in or copying what others do. Instead, they’re focused on creating something new. They innovate, take risks, and never settle for status quo. Right now, everyone seems fixated on trends. If you’ve scrolled through LinkedIn lately, you’ve probably noticed endless posts featuring AI-generated action figures and avatars. Interesting, entertaining, yes. But if everyone is doing it, its no longer special When everyone is doing the same thing, nobody truly stands out. Following these trends won’t differentiate you; it makes you blend in even more. Conformity won’t help you secure your future, especially in uncertain economic and political times. The safety promised by following rules is an illusion—because being just another face in the crowd won’t get you noticed, hired, or valued. Stepping out as an original thinker isn’t easy. When I started the Badass Agile podcast, it was a leap into the unknown. People questioned me, doubted me, and sometimes outright rejected me. Including myself. But that rejection was just the cost of entry to building something uniquely mine, something valuable. Non-conformity required that I learn resilience and courage—qualities that genuinely attract people who are looking for leadership and inspiration. If you want to be fulfilled, start seeing yourself as someone who creates unique value. It begins with recognizing your own voice and ideas, then having the courage to share them openly. Experiment, make mistakes, and stay committed despite setbacks or criticism. Be ready to walk away from security for the sake of pursuing something genuinely impactful. Not everyone will embrace this path, and that’s fine. If you’re content with your comfort zone, no judgment. But if the thought of making a distinctive mark excites you, start by documenting your thoughts and ideas daily. Practice sharing your vision courageously and authentically. Non-conformity is always risky. In this episode of Badass Agile, we explore what it means when the thrill and satisfaction of being the hero in our work begins to fade. Many of us who work in Agile or similar fields were drawn to the practice for the real impact we could have helping others adapt to change, master the unknown, or achieve things they thought were out of reach. That feeling of significance has powered our professional lives. But as technology matures and becomes commonplace, and as Agile practices become standardized across industries, the nature of our impact changes. We’re no longer the rescuers bringing people up to speed with new tools or processes—those skills are now table stakes. The field feels crowded; it feels like we’re no longer making the difference we used to. Some of us feel unsettled by this shift, even questioning whether our roles are still needed. There’s a shared anxiety: if we’re not the heroes anymore, what’s next? Let’s dig into this inflection point, acknowledging the discomfort that comes with realizing that merely being well-versed in Agile ways or knowing the latest technique isn’t enough. The work itself—the “how” and “what”—isn’t changing at the breakneck speed it once did, and the vast knowledge base we used to rely on is now easily accessible to anyone. If we’re honest, we recognize that sticking strictly to the old playbook—serving in traditional Agile roles, focusing on routine team practices, and repeating patterns—isn’t as valuable as it once was. So, as a community, we’re challenged to reconsider where our value truly lies. The idea is to look beyond the established frameworks, to step up and address the emerging issues that teams and organizations still face—problems that Agile hasn’t solved yet. There’s a call to listen more deeply to our clients and teams, to identify pain points that persist even after Agile has “arrived,” and to find ways to serve that are innovative and unique. Rather than clinging to the hero story of the past, we see this as an invitation to evolve our practice, deepen our impact, and innovate new forms of value.
