Michael Kohlhaas is an 1811 novella by Heinrich von Kleist, based on a 16th-century story of Hans Kohlhase. Both the theme (a fanatical quest for justice) and the style (existentialist detachment posing as a chronicle) are surprisingly modern. Vuoden 1917 tapahtumia muutaman käänteentekevän päivän aikana. Sarjan aikana tapahtumat etenevät maaliskuun vallankumouksesta aina vuoden 1917 loppuun, itsenäisen Suomen syntymiseen. Tutkijahaastattelujen lisäksi ohjelmissa luetaan myös vuoden 1917 sanomalehtiä. Niihin perehtyminen on nyt kenelle tahansa helppoa, kun kansallisarkisto on digitoinut ja pannut internettiin esille itsenäisyyden alkuajan lehtiä aina vuoteen 1920 asti.
