This week, Ira spoke with Michael S. Green, author of Lincoln and Native Americans. In this Lincolnesque episode of Ira’s Everything Bagel, Michael talks about the first exploration of Lincoln’s relationship with Native Americans in more than four decades; why Lincoln had a mixed record in dealing with Native Americans; the most surprising thing about Lincoln that he discovered in his research; why you can’t write history if you think your subject is either perfect or evil; why historians and readers have to evaluate their subjects in their time; what Lincoln and his wife had in common (besides poetry); what he found in his research that validated what he surmised; and why Lincoln was a totally political animal.
Michael S. Green, an associate professor of history at University of Nevada, Las Vegas, is the author or editor of three books on the Civil War, including Lincoln and the Election of 1860 (Southern Illinois University Press) and Politics and America in Crisis: The Coming of the Civil War, and several books on Nevada, as well as dozens of articles and essays. He is on the editorial advisory board of the University of Nevada Press and is the executive director of the Pacific Coast Branch of the American Historical Association.
