10:30Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 19, 2021, the 25th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. The Lord upholds my life. No amount of error in a person justifies treating that person in a way that demeans the essential dignity that is theirs as sons or daughters of God. The image of God that we all bear is not effaced by error and so must always be taken into consideration. The Catechism is rather eloquent about the sinful nature of detraction and slander. Mercy, gentleness, dignity, and respect must always be present in our proclamation of the truth. If they are not, the King will not honor our attempts, because He only honors what is done His way.…

This was in the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic when no congregation was able to be present. The Mass was livestreamed on Christ the King's YouTube channel; you may watch it by clicking here . In these difficult times, Fr. Ed reminds us that we need to choose to trust in the love of God, demonstrated in the passion and death of Jesus, and surrender our lives to Him. 10:42Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 9, 2020, the 19th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's first reading , Elijah gives us an example of how we should respond to the increasingly difficult circumstances around us: listen for the still, small voice of the Lord. The Gospel shows us what happens when we take our eyes off Jesus -- but the Lord Jesus doesn't punish Peter, but immediately comes when Peter calls out to Him. In the midst of these challenging times, we need to do what we can to keep our eyes on Jesus, listen to His voice, and draw ever closer to Him. Key words: hope, trust, prayer, contemplation, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, Edith Stein, St. Dominic…

In today's Gospel , Jesus invites us to take His yoke upon us and learn from Him: to see things as He sees them, to love with His love, to understand how He wants us to live. This is particularly crucial in the complicated times in which we live. The starting point has to be that everyone is made in the image and likeness of God and loved by Jesus, and so we must treat them with love, dignity, and respect. The Catechism tells us that the Sacrament of Confirmation is meant to be Pentecost in the life of the believer. (See Catechism paragraph 1302 .) We just need to ask for more of the Presence and power of the Holy Spirit. Fr. Ed gives some examples from his own life. 15:24Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, September 1, 2019, the 22nd Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Society in the time of Jesus was very status conscious. Jesus, however, in today's Gospel calls us to meet the needs of the poor. Pope Francis has recently called on the Charismatic Renewal to take particular care for the poor. As a concrete expression of this and in light of the connections that we already have in Flint through the Servants of God's Love and priest alumni of CTK serving there, Fr. Ed asked CTK parishioners to pray about the possibility of taking the Catholic Community of Flint as a sister parish. Please ask the Lord Jesus what He has in mind for us in this way and let Fr. Ed know via email at pastor@ctkcc.net . Keywords: evangelization, worship…

In today's first reading , we are told that the Lord God wants to comfort us. How does He comfort us? By sending us the Comforter, the Holy Spirit. In today's Gospel , John the Baptist said that Jesus would baptize us in the Holy Spirit and in fire. But what happens in our lives depends on how we respond. Keywords: Holy Spirit, Baptism…

Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, January 6, 2019, the Solemnity of the Epiphany, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. When the Magi saw the predicted configuration of stars take place that fulfilled the prophecy, they had a choice to make whether or not to make the long, arduous journey to see the King of the Jews. We need to ask ourselves, what are we willing to do to be able to kneel in homage before Jesus? Are we willing to persevere in our journey? Keywords: perseverance, worship…

Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2018, the 24th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. In today's Gospel , we see that Peter, who has just been named by Jesus the first pope, immediately falls and is rebuked by Jesus. Yet Jesus does not remove the call that He's placed on Peter's life, nor does He do so with us. Jesus invites us to serve others with kindness and love, even though we ourselves are broken, fallen people. If we ask Him, He will give us the grace we need to shine as lights in the darkness. Dcn. Mark notes that the main point of today's readings is how we are to deal with the suffering, the needy, and everyone we meet. He reflects on the attitude of mercy, compassion, and support that we are called to extend to the least among us, for what we do to them, we do to Jesus Himself. We need to watch what we put into our hearts since that impacts what comes out. Keyword: conversion…

Christ the King Catholic Church
Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 26, 2018, the 21st Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. Today's Gospel contains one of the saddest verses in the New Testament: "As a result of this, many [of] his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him." Jesus had revealed Himself as the Blessed Eucharistic Lord. Some didn't understand how this could happen and so walked away. Today, we're in the midst of a great crisis in the Church. Some bishops and priests have been abusive, and as a result, some people are walking away. What should be our response? As we are so sorry for the terrible crimes that have happened, grieve for those who have been hurt, and respond in other ways, through it all we must keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Ed notes that, in a certain sense, the angel is saying to us what it said to Elijah: you need the food provided by God -- perfectly found in the Eucharist -- in order to have the strength for the journey of life. Do we make time for prayer, for the Eucharistic Lord? Keywords: Eucharist, prayer, worship, stewardship of time…

Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, August 5, 2018, the 18th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. This is the fifth and final homily in a series of homilies that began on July 8, 2018, on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Fr. Ed reviewed the amazing miracles of Exodus that preceded today's first reading , which the Israelites responded to with grumbling instead of gratitude. The provision of food for the Israelites in the desert and the multiplication of the loaves in the Gospel were meant to prepare our hearts for the greatest bread miracle of all, the Eucharist. Fr. Ed reminds us that a Eucharistic spirituality is not just about what you do, but about your attitude of heart, which should be an attitude of gratitude. He calls us to respond to the works of the Lord with trust and gratitude, even in the midst of the challenges and scandals of the present day, and to keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Keywords: worship, Eucharist, gratitude…

This homily is the fourth in a series of homilies that began on July 8, 2018, on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Today's first reading and the Gospel are both about the multiplication of bread. Fr. Ed notes that all the bread miracles are designed to help us grow in our faith so that we can believe in the greatest bread miracle of all: the one that takes place during the Mass when bread becomes the Body of Christ. The Liturgy of the Eucharist is the heart of the Mass, and the reception of Communion is the closest we can come to the Lord Jesus here on earth. Keywords: worship, Eucharist…

This homily is the third in a series of homilies that began on July 8, 2018, on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. In today's Gospel , Jesus, the Good Shepherd, moved with pity for the crowd, responded by beginning "to teach them many things." This homily is the second in a series of homilies on the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. (The first homily in the series is available by clicking here .) Fr. Ed reflects on the ways in which Jesus is really present in the Mass: in the priest, the assembled people, the Word, and "maximally" present in the Eucharist. The Introductory Rites of the Mass call us to prepare for the great gifts of His Word and His Body and Blood, which we are about to receive. Keywords: worship, Eucharist…

Homily given at the 9:00 a.m. Mass on Sunday, July 8, 2018, the 14th Sunday in Ordinary Time, by Fr. Ed Fride, Pastor, Christ the King Catholic Church. This homily is the first in a series of homilies on the Mass. Fr. Ed notes that the Psalm response for today speaks of fixing our eyes on the Lord, something that we can do literally at the Consecration. But, just as the people of Nazareth in today's Gospel were so familiar with Jesus that they couldn't accept what He was doing and saying, so we, too, can become too familiar with the Mass and go into "auto-pilot". To avoid that, Jesus invites us to prepare for Mass by praying, reading Scripture, and praying every day, "Lord, prepare us for Sunday." Keywords: worship, Eucharist…

The information was not new, but it was woven together in such a compelling fashion, full of wit and wisdom, that I found myself entering into the liturgy more deeply the very next day! He reminded us that the liturgy must be need-based.
