This week, Andrea and Jenn are joined by a Left of the Dial favorite. If you pay attention to leftofthedial.fm , you’ll be familiar with Soft and Dumb from Jenn’s review of their self-titled album a little over a year ago, as well as their interview for our Home Studio Stories shortly after that. And today, the Illinois-based duo are here to talk about their dreamy new EP Heaven , out November 17th (that’s today). Today’s guest is a repeat offender! Our listeners will know Zac Ross from one of the greatest pop-punk bands to come out of South Jersey, Man Overboard . He joined us last July to talk about his project Zachary Ross and the Divine, and he’s joining us today to talk about his brand new hardcore project, Slighted. Their album This Means War came out Friday September 29th. In addition, Zachary Ross and the Divine also released a new EP, King Dopamine , on October 5th via SmartPunk Records. Zac joined Andrea and Jenn to talk about both of those releases, writing music like a horror movie, the difference between making hardcore and pop-punk, being honest with yourself, and why it’s okay for women to lie. Most importantly, Andrea and Jenn would like to formally announce their position as co-managers for Zac’s “Slighted Should Play the Gathering of the Juggalos” campaign. More to follow. Superdestroyer is the solo project of the anonymous Ohio-based musician who is also the co-founder of Lonely Ghost Records. Superdestoryer’s most recent album, SoakedInSynth.Zip was released in June. He joined Andrea and Jenn this week to talk about SoakedInSynth.Zip, making music that sounds like being stuck in your basement, making music that sounds like being outside, writing about your demons, running one of the coolest, most unique labels around, and living on the Island of Misfits Toys. We’re such fans of Superdestroyer and everything happening over at Lonely Ghost Records, and we’re so happy to share this conversation with you all. This week on Left of the Dial, Andrea is joined by Gabby and Josh, from South Jersey’s own Afloat. Gabby joined us way back in February to talk about booking bands as Head Above Water collective. But if you need another reminder, Afloat is, according to NJ.com’s Bobby Olivier, “ The best thing to hit Cherry Hill since Bahama Breeze opened at the mall .” That’s high praise, if you ask us. Today, Afloat stops by to share some songs from their upcoming EP, Where I Stand , including a Left of the Dial exclusive premier of their new single, “Through My Veins.” You can stream it everywhere tomorrow, September 1st, but you’ll get to hear first in this episode! Where I Stand is out September 15th on Sinking Ship Records. You can (and should) pre-order it now . Get tickets to Afloat’s Where I Stand release show at Tunes in Voorhees, NJ 09/29 Pre-order Where I Stand on vinyl now Follow Afloat on Instagram @Afloatband Also featured in this episode: Flowermouth, “l.i.l.t.” Oldsoul, “Lavender Cane”…

This week's guest is one of our favorites over here at Left of the Dial. M.A.G.S. is the solo project of Buffalo-born, LA-based artist Elliott Douglas, and listeners of our podcast should be plenty familiar with M.A.G.S. We’ve been singing his praises for as long as Andrea has been hosting Left of the Dial, and definitely since 2021’s Say Things That Matter , an album that we absolutely love. M.A.G.S.' third album, Destroyer , is out August 4th on Smartpunk Records, and he’s with us today to talk about a few songs off of that album and a couple other songs he’s brought along to share, too. We talk about finding beauty in total ruin, seeing your music in colors, connecting with others through art, and so much more. You know, we keep it light. This is a great conversation with a really thoughtful, unique artist, and we can't wait for our listeners to hear it. Pre-order Destroyer now! Keep up with M.A.G.S. in all the usual places. M.A.G.S. is going on tour. Philly listeners, you can see M.A.G.S. on August 16th at PhilaMoca . Find the rest of his dates at elliottmags.com/tour . Follow Left of the Dial on Twitter and Instagram . This week, Andrea sits down with Chris Payne to talk about his new book Where Are Your Boys Tonight? The Oral History of Emo's Mainstream Explosion 1999-2008 . He’s got a list of credits a mile long, covering music for publications like Alternative Press , Vulture , and Billboard where he spent seven years as a staff writer and podcast host covering alternative and independent music. Andrea and Chris talk about the various scenes that birthed the bands who ushered in the emo movement of the early 2000s and the songs that best represent that moment in time. Payne has curated such a vast collection of voices from every corner of the scene(s) at the time, from members of bands like Lifetime, Thursday, Fall Out Boy, and Taking Back Sunday, to the people who watched those bands skyrocket to emo royalty (Hanif Abdurraqib, Jamie Coletta, Chris Gethard). Where Are Your Boys Tonight? is full of candid conversations, recollections, and memories that tell a remarkable story of a truly unique moment in music. Pick up Where Are Your Boys Tonight? Seems like the year just started, but suddenly we're halfway through Spring? Instead of talking with a guest this week, Kitzy and Andrea wanted to share some of the music they've been listening to lately. For Andrea, that means a carefully selected handful of songs. For Kitzy, that means playing spin the wheel with their New Music playlist. There's lots of great stuff from the past couple of months that we haven't gotten a chance to share with you. Don't forget, if you like what you hear, you can find links to pick up music from these artists and to follow them, so you can keep up with their various plans for new music, tours, and all that good stuff. Listeners will be familiar with this week's Left of the Dial guests because they’re the team behind Sweet Juice Fest , a queer feminist musical festival that centers local diverse artists and creators from the Philadelphia region. Christian Lesperance is the mastermind behind Jersey Interchange, a collaboration series that reimagines the songs of the New Jersey punk, hardcore, emo, and ska scenes of the late 90s and early 2000s. Christian joins Andrea on the podcast today because Jersey Interchange is releasing its debut full-length album C1, out May 5th on Sinking Ship Records. C1 features covers of artists who made their name in the Jersey scene (bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart) covered by artists who also made their name in the Jersey scene (in bands like Bigwig, The Ergs! and Shades Apart). This album is an absolute Jersey love fest, but it's also just a collection of really great covers of really great songs and an example of something really beautiful that celebrates collaboration and expression and community and all that good stuff we could use a little more of these days. Pre-orders for C1 have already started. They'll be celebrating the album with a release show on May 13th at Twin Elephant Brewing Co. in Chatham NJ. Lauren Denitzio of Worriers is back on Left of the Dial, and we're so excited to talk with them about their incredible new album, Warm Blanket , which is out April 7th–that’s today if you're listening when this episode drops–on Ernest Jenning Record Co. It’s Worriers' fourth full-length album, but it’s their first release as a solo act and really demonstrates the breadth and depth of Lauren's talent as a songwriter, musician, and now, producer. Kitzy and Andrea loved getting to talk with Lauren about writing, playing, and producing just about every element on the album, how their influences do and don't show up in their music, the importance of well-placed reverb, and a whole lot more. Pick up Warm Blanket today , and if you're in any of the below cities, catch Worriers live this weekend. (They're one of our favorite live bands, so don't miss 'em if you've got the chance.)
