ETA cumplió su amenaza. El 12 de julio a las 16.30h, el concejal del Partido Popular Miguel Ángel Blanco aparecía en un paraje boscoso en Guipúzcoa herido de muerte con dos balas del calibre 22 alojadas en la cabeza. La marca del terrorista Txapote. Los médicos no pudieron hacer nada más que certificar horas después su fallecimiento. El equipo forense realizó la autopsia totalmente impactado y en silencio. España había contenido la respiración durante 48 horas. Para muchos, el episodio supuso el principio del fin de la banda pero también el olvido o el desconocimiento por parte de las nuevas generaciones. En la actualidad, el 60% de los jóvenes no sabe quién es Miguel Ángel Blanco.…
Los días después de la liberación, José Antonio Ortega Lara hablaba poco y muy bajo. Y con un pequeño hilo de voz les dijo a los suyos: “no sabéis cómo son los terroristas. Seguro que ahora matan a alguien”. Ortega Lara estaba seguro de que ETA reaccionaría de alguna manera a su liberación. De que arrebataría la vida a alguien. Aquella feliz mañana del 1 de julio de 1997 se rompería solo 9 días después con el secuestro y posterior asesinato del concejal del Partido Popular en Ermua, Miguel Ángel Blanco. ETA daba un plazo de 48 horas al Gobierno para acercar a las cárceles vascas a todos sus presos. En total, 600. Si no, moriría. Más de 6 millones de españoles se manifestarían para pedir la libertad.
