Welcome to the Becoming Who You Truly Are podcast! We all come into the world as unique personalities. Personalities that come from a part of us which existed before we were born and continue long after death. But while we’re on Earth, with all its joys and wonders and mountains and waterfalls and people and animals and rainforests, well, it seems like we get so excited by the playground that we forget that deepest part of ourselves. And we start to live life from a less true place. And then, slowly, slowly, the merry go round stops spinning and things get real difficult. I started my YouTube channel almost two years ago because I wanted to help myself and others rediscover who we truly are. Because I believe that when we become who we truly are, we reconnect to our deepest creativity and vitality and we’re able to make a better life for ourselves and others. Through my YouTube channel, I’ve shown you places around the world and shared how they helped me reconnect to and become more of my deepest self. Now, in this podcast, I’m going to bring in people: the people who have helped me in my journey to becoming more of who I am. People who are walking their own gloriously imperfect path to authenticity. People that I admire, respect, and want to introduce to you! My hero, Carl Jung, once wrote that, ”The privilege of a lifetime is to become who you truly are,” and I hope that through this podcast, we’ll all learn a little more about how to live life the best we can. Not as others see fit, not as prescribed by a doctor or society or expectations, but as pure and unique as possible! Becoming Who You Truly Are is, in a way, the simplest thing in the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s easy. Therefore, it’s super helpful to have good companions along the quest, and that’s exactly how I hope you’ll think of me and my guests! I can’t promise a bed of roses in this podcast, but I can promise to engage your curiosity, make you laugh, and have conversations that provide you with the flexibility to see life in a new light! Together, we’ll laugh, cry, and everything in between as we explore how to create a life of deep meaning and authenticity. So, whether you’re tuning in on YouTube, Apple Podcasts, or Spotify, thanks for your support, and together, let’s go further down the journey of becoming who we truly are!

Ben Lesser was born in Kraków, Poland in 1928 and his life changed at age ten when the German army invaded his city. Ben's childhood and teen years would be spent in terror, surviving countless acts of violence by Nazi soldiers in the Bochnia Ghetto, two separate death trains, a seven-week death march, and four different concentration camps — Auschwitz-Birkenau, Durnhau, Buchenwald and Dachau. In this powerful podcast episode, Mr. Lesser shares how his desire to survive helped him beat the staggering low odds of coming out of Auschwitz alive, and how despite all the evil he endured, how he learned to forgive and to love everyone. Hey dad, wanna have a catch? Field of Dreams is one of my all-time favorite movies - especially the last scene where Dwier Brown plays the role of Kevin Costner's character's father. I was honored to have a conversation with Dwier on fate, fatherhood, and Field of Dreams in celebration of Father's Day 2022 and in this podcast Morgan and I go back and react to that conversation including parts of the chat that were previously unreleased. In this episode, Dwier reminisces on his time on the set of Field of Dreams and shares behind the scenes stories, we discuss his relationship with his grandfather, father, and son, and we talk about the role of fate in the journey we all undertake of becoming who we truly are in this life. I hope that the video inspires you as much as it did me...and if it does, perhaps send it to the fathers in your life! Kids come into the world full of creativity, and curiosity, but adults shut down who a child truly is by instilling fear through Christian teachings of hell and the rapture, confusion around sexuality and gender before they are ready to be exposed to those topics, guilt around their skin color, polarization through labels and telling kids which groups of people are 'good' and 'bad,' and the insanity of school shootings and having to walk through metal detectors in order to get to class. In this episode, Morgan and I talk about our sadness over seeing these topics crop up so often, our fear about the cost of speaking up and saying what we really believe, and we discuss two heroes who helped un-brainwash us. We also discuss how to raise free-thinking kids like her daughters, and how to continually identify and unravel the brainwashing (and subsequent fear and biases) that we all have in some shape or form. This is a controversial, difficult episode, but we really tried to open our hearts and speak from a place of truth and wisdom. We hope that you find value and meaning from it and that the ways we describe brainwashing - and what we can do to unbrainwash ourelves and protect our kids - can, well, help you and your loved ones become more of who you truly are! This week's guest, Camille Brattli, grew up in the Philippines in a very tight-knit family unit and church community. There wasn't enough room for her to say no and be herself, so she spent her twenties living in Thailand, the Netherlands, and Norway before she finally gained her sense of self and learned how to say no. Camille's story sheds light on ways that we can learn to identify when others are pressuring us to conform into people pleasing and she gives insight on how we can learn to deal with the discomfort inherent in saying no and setting boundaries.…

This week, I am honored to be talking to Lana Jernigan, who helped raise a whole generation of youth group kids through her long tenure at a summer camp ministry near Fayetteville, NC called Camp Dixie! Lana was one of the few adults who actually seemed to make sense to me when I was a teenager, so naturally, she made a huge impression on me and I thought it would be fun to have her on the show to reminisce together and to hear about the turning points in her life’s journey that brought her closer to a life of authenticity. Lana is a mother, grandmother, and recently moved to Georgia to start a new adventure as Director of Operations for Trueface. In this episode, Lana is going to get real with us about how peace and pain can co-exist in the middle of loss, why it’s ok to beat on God’s chest, and how God’s grace changes everything. I’m sure that by the end of this hour, we’re all going to be inspired by Lana’s story, which will prove that God loves us and wants to launch us into the dreams he has for us! We talk about a range of subjects from maturity, my new adventure starting my first job in Norway, how to live a happy life, how to stop war, why it's so hard to find a good job, our favorite classical instruments, ethical dilemmas, morality, learning Norwegian and American Sign Language, and whether or not humans can love dogs. Then, we hone in on a letter that a listener submitted where she asks for advice on how to help the gay teen in her life. We discuss what gay teens need, whether God loves gay people, whether being gay is a sin, bible passages about homosexuality, and why we love God. Call me! This week, I’m THRILLED to be speaking with Gary Lachman, who played bass guitar for the iconic rock group Blondie before embarking upon a successful legacy as a biographer of major figures in philosophy, psychology, and mysticism. Gary and I begin by discussing his wonderful book Jung the Mystic, which I stumbled upon in a library several years ago. Then, we talk about the turning points in Gary’s life story: comic books, rock music, and Jung! Gary talks about how he learned to read through comic books and how the lessons he learned from those stories inspired his songwriting and later allowed him to understand and write about major thinkers and their profound ideas about life in a fun and enjoyable way! Then, Gary and I go on a trip down memory lane when he shares about the beginnings of Blondie, living with his bandmates, writing songs like I’m Always Touched by Your Presence Dear, and what led to his departure from the group. Then, Gary shares about his time between Blondie and finding his path as a writer, when he founded his own band called The Know and toured with Iggy Pop, followed the teachings of Aleister Crowley and was deeply impacted by Colin Wilson’s book The Occult, and eventually found his way to London. Gary ends by sharing deep, powerful thoughts about unpacking the potential of who we truly are, following our interests, and the win-win strategy of believing that life has meaning. I’m sure that by the end of this hour, we’re all going to be inspired by Gary’s story, which will prove that if we follow our interests and take risks, we will undoubtedly create a meaningful life. This week Nancy Walker (retired professor of voice at UNC Greensboro) and I talk about proud memories during her 33 year teaching career as well as life lessons from marriage, motherhood, and her Quaker faith. In this episode, Nancy shares three important turning points in her journey to letting her life speak authentically: taking a big leap in changing her major from English to music in undergraduate studies, meeting her husband at age 27, and putting down roots in Greensboro, North Carolina, where she had children and finding a community in the Quaker faith tradition. Originally from Orange County, California, Courtney Draughon ended up seeing the world through the Air Force before meeting my nephew and having a beautiful baby boy! In this episode, Courtney and I reminisce on our first impressions of each other as well as our recent time together in Doha, Qatar, where she currently lives. We talk about her childhood in Orange County, California, and her high school years. Courtney shares about how the Air Force gave her a sense of safety and tells stories about boot camp and her tour of duty in Kuwait. Courtney also gives us the gossip on how she and Davon met, how he proposed, and their wedding ceremony! Courtney also gets real about the difficult labor process of delivering their child, and how his presence has given her immense purpose and meaning. I have to say this rapid fire was the most difficult of any episode because Courtney had DEEP questions for me! And finally, my favorite part of the episode was Courtney's parting words, where she challenges us all to be less offended by opinions we don't like and how to desensitize ourselves to the noise of the world rather than obsessing. My childhood piano teacher Kristen Anderson has created a powerful legacy through her holistic methods that teach students how to laugh at ourselves, to just breathe when we get nervous, and that our value and worth is NOT tied to our talent. In this episode, Kristen and I reminisce on her first impressions of me as a sixth grader and her childhood working in tobacco fields with her highly musical family, as well as in depth discussion of our mutual love of southern gospel music and the spiritual and psychological power of hymns like It is Well with My Soul, Leaning on the Everlasting Arms, Abide with Me, Day by Day, and more. We talk about how words are powerful and share stories of her graduate advisors encouraging her to finish her degree and Kristen’s note to me to always remember that people are more important than music. Kristen shares how even though she had achieved the American dream and had a graduate degree, a good job, and a family, she woke up one morning and realized that she wasn’t taking care of herself. We discuss her return back to health, and how exercise is a powerful antidote to stress and anxiety. Kristen reveals a difficult moment in her personal and family story, and we talk about how God is never finished with us. Even when we feel like giving up, God doesn’t give up on us. We discuss how to come back from those difficult situations. We conclude with a fun rapid fire segment, and finally, Kristen shares powerful words that we are lovable and valuable simply because we are all God’s children.
