This episode of EV Musings explores the concept of renting electric vehicles (EVs) instead of owning them. The discussion covers short-term rental services like Zimble, which offers hourly EV rentals with home delivery, and traditional rental companies like Europcar, which provide both short-term and long-term EV rental options. The episode highlights the benefits of EV rentals, including cost savings, reduced environmental impact, and the opportunity for potential EV buyers to experience driving an electric car before making a purchase. We'll look at the big rental companies AND the smaller, more bespoke rental companies Guest Details: Tom Middleditch - An experienced marketing and product development leader, Tom has been in the mobility sector for more than 15 years, and has worked for a number of brands in the leisure and business travel space. In this episode of EV Musings, Gary delves into the topic of electric vehicle (EV) tyres, addressing common myths and facts surrounding their efficiency, wear, and particulate emissions. The discussion covers the role of tyres in vehicle efficiency, the impact of driving style on tyre wear, and the misconception that EVs produce more tyre particulates due to their weight. The episode also introduces innovative solutions like the Tyre Collective's device for capturing tyre particulates and explores the broader implications of tyre and brake dust on environmental pollution. You'll have heard the stories going around social media about the impact that heavier EVs are having on tyre wear - they're wearing out quicker and pushing particulate matter into the air. Well, as with most social media stories the truth is a little less dramatic. This week we look at tyre wear in EVs. In this episode of EV Musings, Gary discusses the idea that households with off-street parking and two cars should consider making one of them electric. The conversation explores the case of households with two fossil fuel cars, addresses cost and range concerns, highlights the availability of small-sized EVs, and discusses the benefits of owning an EV. He also emphasizes the role of education and test drives in overcoming ignorance and misinformation about electric vehicles. Takeaways Households with off-street parking and two cars should consider making one of them electric. Cost and range concerns can be addressed, especially with the availability of affordable second-hand EVs and a wide range of small-sized EVs. Hybrids can be seen as a compromise, but if the goal is to go electric, it's better to choose a full electric vehicle. Owning an EV opens up opportunities for low-priced EV charging tariffs and other benefits. Education and test drives play a crucial role in changing perceptions and increasing EV uptake. If you have 2 cars and off-street parking one of them could be an EV. I'll tell you why. In Episode 205 Gary looks at climate in a fascinating conversation with Richard Allan- a climate scientist and academic. They discuss the difference between climate and weather, why carbon is so important despite being such a small part of the atmosphere, why some climate scientists disagree about global warming and we hear his thoughts on carbon offsets and geoengineering. Ever wanted to ask a climate scientist the questions about climate that nobody is asking? I do that for you Guest Details: Richard Allan is a professor of Climate Science at the University of Reading Department of Meteorology. His research is driven by the fundamental question: how much will Earth warm in the current century and what are the implications for the global water cycle, upon which societies and ecosystems depend? He uses Earth Observation data to explore fluctuations in clouds, water vapour, rainfall and the Earth's radiative energy balance and use this information to assess the realism of climate prediction models and improve our understanding of the climate system. We know there’s always been issues of people spreading bad information about EVs (The first episode of this podcast was called ‘Myths and Legends’, after all). But recently it seems that the FUD (Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt) surrounding EVs has stepped up a notch. We talk with Quentin Willson and Claire Cullen from Stop Burning Stuff about this issue.
