When a young Eva Kollisch arrives as a refugee in New York in 1940, she finds a community among socialists who share her values and idealism. She soon discovers ‘the cause’ isn’t as idyllic as it seems. Little does she know this is the beginning of a lifelong commitment to activism and her determination to create radical change in ways that include belonging, love and one's full self. In addition to Eva Kollisch’s memoirs Girl in Movement (2000) and The Ground Under My Feet (2014), LBI’s collections include an oral history interview with Eva conducted in 2014 and the papers of Eva’s mother, poet Margarete Kolllisch, which document Eva’s childhood experience on the Kindertransport. Learn more at www.lbi.org/kollisch . Exile is a production of the Leo Baeck Institute , New York | Berlin and Antica Productions . It’s narrated by Mandy Patinkin. Executive Producers include Katrina Onstad, Stuart Coxe, and Bernie Blum. Senior Producer is Debbie Pacheco. Associate Producers are Hailey Choi and Emily Morantz. Research and translation by Isabella Kempf. Sound design and audio mix by Philip Wilson, with help from Cameron McIver. Theme music by Oliver Wickham. Voice acting by Natalia Bushnik. Special thanks to the Kollisch family for the use of Eva’s two memoirs, “Girl in Movement” and “The Ground Under My Feet”, the Sophia Smith Collection at Smith College and their “Voices of Feminism Oral History Project”, and Soundtrack New York.…

Send us a text "Good At Being Alone" is a song about the balance between being social and needing solitude. As an introvert, I love spending time with friends and family, going out, and meeting new people—but I also need space to recharge. It's not about isolation; it's about finding peace in being alone. One of my favorite lines in the song is, "I'm just a mammal in the sea, I need to surface just to breathe." That’s exactly how I feel about life—I dive into social experiences, but every so often, I need to step away, decompress, and create. That’s what this song is about: not loneliness, but the joy of solitude. Find more programs at https://www.milwaukeepbs.org/stream…

Send us a text "Embozi" is a song born from a moment of deep uncertainty. I was losing my balance, losing myself, and struggling to find my direction again. Music, which had always been my anchor, felt like it was slipping away. I had this thought—maybe I’ll write one last song, one last album, and then I’m done. But then came a long drive to Nashville, a full week of songwriting ahead, and hours alone in the car with nothing but my own thoughts. No music, no distractions—just silence. And in that silence, I finally heard the voice that had always kept me steady—a voice I hadn’t heard in a long time. "Embozi" means talk or rumor in Uganda, and at that time, the noise of doubt and fear was deafening. But this song came from the moment when the real voice—the one that keeps me moving forward—cut through all of it. These are the words that voice said. Send us a text "Golden Brown" is a deeply personal song I wrote for my wife while working on my first album. I wanted to include something just for her, a quiet tribute to how much she means to me. Over time, as our family has grown, the song has taken on even greater meaning. Now, when I sing it, I feel its weight even more—especially the line, "Oh my God, if you take this away from me, I might forfeit what is left." It’s no longer just about my love for her, but also for our son, and the realization that without them, there might be nothing else. Find more programs at https://www.milwaukeepbs.org/stream…
Send us a text Between 1916 and 1970, roughly six million African-Americans living in the South uprooted their families to migrate to cities in the West and North. They came seeking the promise of a better life; escape from racial violence, better jobs, higher wages, and better educational opportunities. Milwaukee and Wisconsin began to feel the shift in the 1940s. Just before WWII, Milwaukee’s Black population totaled about 1.5 percent. By 1950 that number had increased to 3.5 per cent, approximately 22,000 people. By 1970 the number had ballooned to 103,000 people, and by the turn of the century, Milwaukee’s Black population exceeded 200,000 people. “Milwaukee s Migration Families” talks with Black residents who left the South for a better life; and first and second generation Milwaukeeans currently living here to find out whether things actually improved for them by coming here. Send us a text Did you know new videogames are still being created for the NES? That's right, the almost 4 decade old videogame console is still chuggin'! While traveling around the country with his indie rock band, Spaceraft, Jordan and his bandmates spent their free time playing old NES favorites like Tecmo Bowl and Excitebike. He grew to appreciate the artistry and design of those classic Nintendo games and, being a musician, he became infatuated with their soundtracks. After doing a little research he discovered the world of NES game design was alive and well. He started composing music for developers, and then some design, and then some programming and eventually, created his very own game, Spaceraft. Named after his band, the game stars himself and his bandmates as they travel around Milwaukee looking for their stolen mastertapes. It's a work of art brimming with vibrancy, uniqueness, and lots of familiar Milwaukee establishments. Find more programs at https://www.milwaukeepbs.org/stream…
