Of those, her past favorite was softball, but she traded that in for her new love, volleyball. Her late husband, Randy, was a referee, and their son later joined "the dark side" as a baseball and volleyball referee in Florida. You deal with a lot of the same verbal things from people that we deal with and unfortunately, nowadays, it's getting physical for refs so you gotta know how to defend yourself. Send us a text Twelve years ago, when Kristyne Esparza (Los Angeles, CA) was a youth coach, she filled in for referees who didn't show up. The pay was so good that she kept at it to help pay for grad school. Today, she is in the NBA pipeline, and she pays a professional track coach to improve her speed and appearance on the court. Kristyne has refereed for a year in the D-League and for seven years in the G-League. She currently works at the men's college D1 level. Who says girls can't compete?
