Episode Description: Jessica B. Harris may have been born and raised in New York City, but she has Tennessee roots through her father and has spent much of her life split between homes in the Northeast and the South – specifically New Orleans. For more than fifty years, she has been a college professor, a writer, and a lecturer, and her many books have earned her a reputation as an authority on food of the African Diaspora, as well as a lifetime achievement award from the James Beard Foundation. A few years back, Netflix adapted her book, High on the Hog: A Culinary Journey from Africa to America , into a 4 part docuseries. And I’m very proud to say that she’s a longtime contributor to Southern Living with a regular column called The Welcome Table. This episode was recorded in the Southern Living Birmingham studios, and Sid and Jessica talked about her mother’s signature mac and cheese, the cast-iron skillet she’d be sure to save if ever her house were on fire, and her dear friend, the late New Orleans chef Leah Chase. We’re halfway through the semester, can you believe it! This week’s episode is all about Peer Tutoring and how Peer Tutoring can help you be more strategic with your studies. Mid-term exams have been happening all over campus and we know that this can bring stress and anxiety to our students. Peer Tutoring is here to support you on your journey to success this semester. Peer Tutors are upper year/upper semester students who are succeeding in their program and have been recommended by faculty for the role of Peer Tutor. They are paid by the College to provide drop-in sessions weekly, to help guide you through your program. You don’t need to be struggling in your program to attend Peer Tutoring. Attending these sessions is a great way to reinforce your knowledge of the concepts and topics that you’re learning, by talking them through with your peer tutor and other students in your cohort. Being strategic about your studies is not only key to success, but key to reducing your overall anxiety and stress this semester! Nearly every program at the College has Peer Tutoring sessions set up. You can find your program sessions by: Logging into your LMS, clicking the “Resources” tab then the link Peer Tutoring and Academic Supports Calendar . Click on any day of the week and a list on the right, will show you when, and where, sessions are happening on campus. Visit the Peer Tutoring message board by the bookstore for a physical list to scroll through Email: Peer.Tutoring@SaultCollege.ca For more, listen to The Roar!…
