A secret field that summons lightning. A massive spiral that disappears into a salt lake. A celestial observatory carved into a volcano. Meet the wild—and sometimes explosive—world of land art, where artists craft masterpieces with dynamite and bulldozers. In our Season 2 premiere, guest Dylan Thuras, cofounder of Atlas Obscura, takes us off road and into the minds of the artists who literally reshaped parts of the Southwest. These works aren’t meant to be easy to reach—or to explain—but they just might change how you see the world. Land art you’ll visit in this episode: - Double Negative and City by Michael Heizer (Garden Valley, Nevada) - Spiral Jetty by Robert Smithson (Great Salt Lake, Utah) - Sun Tunnels by Nancy Holt (Great Basin Desert, Utah) - Lightning Field by Walter De Maria (Catron County, New Mexico) - Roden Crater by James Turrell (Painted Desert, Arizona) Via Podcast is a production of AAA Mountain West Group.…

And speaking of Buster the Blind Rescue Pug … today’s episode is all about our pawsome foster boy and the incredible journey we’ve shared. 🐶💛 Buster is the first blind Pug I’ve ever had the honour of living with, and let me tell you—it’s been eye-opening in all the best ways. Call me a big kid, but I absolutely love children’s books—especially ones about pugs! There’s something magical about diving into a simpler world, where I can easily imagine my own pug as the star of the story. PD the Pug (with a little help from his mommy Marilee) has been busy turning beloved fairy tales into pawsome furry-tail adventures. You can just picture PD right in the middle of all the fun and what I love most is that while the stories are playful and full of PD charm, they still hold onto timeless messages that feel just as relevant today. And is why Furry Fairy Tails; PD The Pug's Bedtime Stories is now my favourite PD book In this episode we talked about: 06:10 My favourite Furry Fairy Tails 06:30 Tell us all about yourself, PD the Pug and his first 4 books 12:45 How did you come up with the concept for the Furry Fairy Tails 14:35 What Fairy Tales didn’t make it? 15:50 The appearance of the Secret Fawn Girl Pug 18:30 Did PD need to dress up in costume to get in character for the book? 21:00 PD modelling his Pug Parties outfits 26:50 The appearance of PD’s arch-nemesis Ralph 30:10 How do you get a book from idea to selling, including the development of each illustration? 39:00 Does PD sign his own books at book signings? 40:00 Win a copy of your very own Furry Fairy Tails; PD The Pug's Bedtime Stories 43:05 Where can you buy the book and when is the next book signing in the US? If there’s one thing that gets me every time, it’s a heartwarming ‘Puggily Ever-After’—whether it’s a rescue pug finding their forever family or a lost pug making their way back home. Just the thought of that joyful reunion gets me teary-eyed and makes my heart skip a beat! ❤️🐾 So, when I had the chance to chat with Dr. Doug Black about one of Australia’s largest pet registries, I couldn’t say no! Have you ever considered memorialising your Pug or Puggies by getting a tattoo? I already have one tattoo from my Navy days, and I always thought that I’d get more but life just got in the way and I’m now thinking that it’s time to change that – the big question is, what do I get? I have been a Pug-mum to five Pugs in the last 20 years, not counting the Rescue Puggies I have been blessed to foster, and I’m wondering if I will have enough “body canvas” to fit them and future Pugs in if I choose a particular type or size of tattoo. So, to help me with my decision, I invited Tattoo Artist, Sarah Tavilla to come on the Show and talk about her work and what are the most popular tattoo’s for Pawrents. In this episode I’ll cover: 02:15 Tell us about yourself and your fur-family 03:15 Tell us about how you came to becoming an animal portrait artist 06:40 A happy Pug Pawrent customer story 08:30 Reason’s why a Pawrent gets a Pet Pawtrait 11:20 What is the favoured tattoo style? 14:40 Describe the process from start to final tattoo on your skin 19:10 Describe how a Pawrent can take the pawfect photo of their pet for their pawtrait 24:30 What is the main reason why people come to you to get a tattoo? 27:00 What is the most interesting tattoo request you’ve ever had? 28:50 What is the most popular portrait style? 32:00 Do you have a favourite tattoo? 33:00 How long does the tattoo take? 34:15 Where can we find you? World War and Service Animal Day is a couple of weeks away, on the 24 February to be exact, and ashamedly as a veteran myself I didn’t know about this very impawtant day or what the Purple Poppy was until I meet some of the team at the Dog Lovers Show. Needless to say, after that enlightening conversation and the purchase of a couple of Purple Poppies for myself and Andrew to wear alongside our Red Poppies I invited the President of the Australian War Animal Memorial Organisation, Nigel Allsop, to come onto the show and talk to me about what it is AWAMO does, what does the Purple Poppy represent, as well as tell me about the first recipient of the Australian and New Zealand Distinctive Animal Distinguished Service Medal to be awarded this year on 24 February at the Australian War Memorial. Last week I spoke to Jo from Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria about the work they do and the Puggie lives they save … not to mention the puggily ever after stories they get a front row seat too when a resuce puggie gets their wish of being adopted by a loving family. So this week, Jo kindly agreed to pop back on the PUGCAST and talk about the Christmas wishes three rescue puggies have asked SantaPaws to grant, and how you might be able to help SantaPaws grant those wishes *Please note that the audio does experience a little bit of feedback during the episode that we couldn’t edit out without affecting the conversation :( Want to skip ahead, this is where to find the topics we discussed in the PUGCAST: 03:10 Cindy’s Christmas wish from SantaPaws 09:30 Mercay’s Christmas wish from SantaPaws 15:45 Abby’s Christmas wish from SantaPaws 19:11 Give a donation as a Christmas Gift on someone’s behalf Get to know our Rescue Puggies better: Cindy - https://www.pugrescue.org.au/adopt-cindy/ Mercay - https://www.pugrescue.org.au/adopt-mercay/ Abby - https://www.instagram.com/p/DBQywBlT60R/ Want to learn more about Pug Rescue and Adoption Victori: Adoption Process : https://www.pugrescue.org.au/adoption/ Donation Options : https://www.pugrescue.org.au/donations/ Website : www.pugrescue.org.au Facebook : www.facebook.com/PugRescueVic Instagram : www.instagram.com/pugrescuevic If you haven’t already, please subscribe to the PUGCAST so you don’t miss out on the next Episode and leave us a review; it only takes a couple of seconds to give us a 5-star review and it goes a long way to helping other Pug-Pawrents find us. Many years ago, when I rescued my first pug Winston a.k.a Fatdog through a local Vet who was doing everything they could to save the life of a little black pug whose only crime was that his family no longer wanted him and thought it was better to ‘put him down’ than find a loving home, did I realise just how naive I was about the world of pugs. Which is why today’s episode is so important to me – today I’m talking to Joanna from Pug Rescue and Adoption Victoria, a volunteer community foster care network that rehabilitates Pugs, and Frenchies when the need arises, so that they find their fur-ever loving family and to never have to face the possibility of being ‘put down’ because their owners don’t want to help them find a loving home. Today I am talking to Sarah, the President of the Pet Professionals Guild Australia, about the services they provide the Fur-pawrent community and why they do it. Now I know the name sounds very officious and I would understand you thinking that today’s conversation might be a little dry, but I’m telling you it’s neither; it’s fascinating and very informative. Not only is the PPGA a trusted location to find Pet Professionals who believe in and embody force free, humane training and pet care methods, they are also a huge repository of information about the many baffling things our Pugs/Pets do that needs explaining in a simple easily digestible way that is also fact checked which we know is not always the case with other websites. Want to skip ahead, this is where to find the topics we discussed in the PUGCAST: 01:58 How did I find the PPGA? 03:39 Meet Sarah the PPGA President and her fur-family 04:40 How did the PPGA start and how does it serve the Pet Community? 09:35 Who gives the Pet Owners webinars and what are their qualifications? 11:17 The ‘Advice for Pet Owners’ resource 16:50 Can you contact an expert for advice? 17:30 The Pet Professional Directory – Nation-wide coverage – what is included and what isn’t? 20:20 The Pet Owner Membership benefits 21:40 PPGA Sponsorship Programs – anyone interested in becoming a Pet Professional can apply for a scholarship 27:30 Segue - There is such a thing as ‘cat training’? 30:05 How often does the PPGA update its website listings? 32:20 Who writes the website articles and are they ‘peer reviewed’? 34:30 Events that you can meet PPGA staff in person 53:00 Can anyone join the PPGA? 41:48 Where can we find the PPGA? There is a saying that goes “everyone has a book inside of them” and who knew that included Pugs! Now it’s not often I get to meet a multi-talented Pug such as PD the Pug; pug-author and all round cute snaggle-toothed boy pug, but thankfully he agreed to come on the Show to not only talk about himself and his pawsomeness (or should I say, have his Pug-mom Marilee talk about his pawsomeness), but to also talk about his books – the fourth having been released this year and my personal favourite – ‘A Star is Born!; PD the Pug on the Silver Screen. In this episode I’ll cover: 02:42 What inspired you to become a Pug-Pawrent? 07:08 Tell us a little bit about yourself and PD; how did you meet?? 24:54 Describe PD’s Pawsonality and share the naughty traits that you love the most and might not be in his books 35:07 Tell us all about PD’s writing career and his four books – what inspired him to become an author noting the many careers he tried in Book 3 ‘Working like a …Dog’. 43:50 Are we ever going to meet PD’s ‘secret fawn girl pug crush’? 49:26 We really want to know about PD’s ‘under the stairs house’ and his ‘kitchen bench nook’ 55:34 Tell us about PD’s recent collaboration with the Rainbow Bridge Hospice 57:14 How can our listeners find PD the Pug and his books? Our episode today is one that I have wanted to do for some time now because I know so little about essential oils, but I love having them in my life. I love burning scented candles in my office and my home, I love a relaxing bath with some relaxing salts and an occasional visit from Rosie and Kenji checking up on me to make sure I haven’t forgotten them or dinner time, and I love running my diffuser when I don’t have a candle. The challenge is that I know enough about essential oils to know that some are not good for our furry fur-ends, but not enough to know what is good, what is bad and what combination is best for me and the Puggies … so you can see why I asked Libby to join me on the Show to dispel the myth, provide the fact and even give me a little advice about that little thing called anxiety which we all know Kenji suffers from. In this episode I’ll cover: 03:00 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family 05:02 What inspired you to learn more about essential oils specifically for pets? 05:57 What are the “don’t” with essential oils and why? 13:59 Talk us through the oils that are safe for Pugs and what can they do for them? 22:48 Explain the different methods of application – diffuser, petting, ear tipping or paws. 33:24 Listener offer 36:22 How can our listeners find you? Libby has provided us with a special link that you can use to purchase oils for your Pug at a reduced price and get access to ongoing support and education, YEAH! Our last episode was an interview with Dr Dennis Wormald who wrote a book called ‘A Dedication to Difficult Dogs; A heartwarming tale shedding light on Canine Mental Health’ and if you haven’t listened to it yet, I highly recommend you do before listening to this episode. Why you might ask? well in this episode I’m going to share with you how I have fared so far, using the knowledge I have gained from reading the book and talking to Dr Dennis on the PUGCAST, so you get a first-hand account of putting some of the lessons into practice and seeing/hearing my results so far so you can judge for yourself if you’d like to purchase the book and put it into practice yourself. It’s not often that I gush about a book of any kind, so when I do come across a book that I not only enjoy reading but I also get a lot out of when it comes to understanding my Puggies I gush to everyone, and then I ask for the author to come onto the Pug Life Show so we can talk about it in detail. Dr Dennis Wormald’s book ‘A Dedication to Difficult Dogs; A heartwarming tale shedding light on Canine Mental Health’ is a must read for every Pug-Pawrent out there. It doesn’t matter if your Pug has anxiety or not, this book helped me understand what might be going on in Rosie and Kenji’s heads (not to mention the rescue Puggies I care for) on a daily basis and thanks to that, I feel like I’m a better Pug-mom for it. In this episode I’ll cover: 07:40 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family. 09:20 What inspired you to focus on dog mental health and then write a book about it? 16:30 Tell me about anthropomorphism - explain what it is and how it affects our relationship with our Pugs. 29:00 Why is it so important for us as Pug Pawrents to learn how to interpret our Pugs behaviour, and where do we get it wrong? 44:40 Talk about a Pugs incredible sense of smell 52:20 Let’s talk about emotional learning vs operant learning/punishment – why is one better than the other and why is it so important to learn the difference 62:50 How can our listeners find you? This conversation was one that I wished I had had 18-months ago when Charles passed – to be able to have Charles at home with us as we said goodbye to him wouldn’t have made the decision any easier, but it would have made the process so much more private. I’m not saying that the process at a Vet isn’t compassionate or thoughtful, but not having to walk out into a waiting room full of heathy dogs with my cheeks still wet from crying to pay the final bill is a much better way to start the grieving process. I know that when the time comes, I will be giving Rosie and Kenji the opportunity to say goodbye from the comfort of our home, and I think you will be considering it too once you listen to what Dr Tom Milton from ‘The Kindest Goodbye’ shares in the episode. In this episode I’ll cover: 03:05 Tell us a little bit about yourself and your fur-family 04:40 What inspired you to start The Kindest Goodbye? 12:00 The process 16:20 Without sounding crass, what is the best part about The Kindest Goodbye? 20:38 What is the difference between your service and going to a Vet/funeral home? 27:20 Can you talk us through your ‘Quality of Life’ scale 38:10 Where are you located 38:50 What is next for your business that our listeners need to be aware of, if relevant? 41:00 How can our listeners find you? Have you ever wondered what your Puggie’s name says about you or your Puggie Pawrent friend? Well let me tell you, I asked myself that question after my conversation with Gurvinder about Espresso and Martini, two fabulous Puggie names, and I ended up down a rabbit hole reading a multitude of articles (yes I’m not the only one who has thought about this apparently) and I thought I would share some of the more interesting things I discovered in my reading journey about what is in a Puggies name. In this episode I’ll cover: 05:05 A little bit of history of pet names 06:40 An interesting French naming convention for dogs 08:40 What does your Pets name say about you 17:15 Popular pet names of 2024 Articles referenced in the PUGCAST: https://www.forbes.com/2010/02/25/dog-name-owners-lifestyle-what-your-dogs-name-says-about-you_slide.html https://archcreekanimalclinic.com/pet-names/ https://slate.com/life/2024/05/dog-baby-names-boy-girl-best-pets.html https://www.thedodo.com/amphtml/dogs-name-says-about-you-1299743736.html https://au.news.yahoo.com/obsessed-strange-rule-dog-names-153257089.html If you liked the episode, or if you think it'll be useful for someone else, please leave a review on your PODCAST streaming service. It’s our first Pug interview for 2024 and it’s a PAWSOME one; how could you not love it when we’re talking to pugs with names that said in quick succession mean a tasty ‘adults only’ drink …. Espresso Martini! I can only imagine how much fun Gurvinder, their Pug-mom has calling their names when they’re running a amok at WhittlePug. So, recently I had the pleasure of discovering Melbourne’s first and only Indoor Dog Park with Rosie, Kenji and their Foster Sister and Brother Roxie and Wally, and boy did we have a great time! I’m not sure I saw their bodies move for the rest of the day when we finally got home they were so PUGGERED but it is a testament to the work that Charnelle has put into creating this amazing space for our fur-children. So if you’re looking for a safe alternative to an outdoor dog park that has separate play areas for small and large dogs … not to mention the fact that you don’t have to worry about rain, wind or hail, then I think today’s PUGCAST might be just what you’re looking for this winter. In this episode I’ll cover: 02:22 Tell us about yourself and your fur-family 07:30 12-year-old Dog-mum 12:24 How her puppies got their names 16:38 What was the inspiration for Bark Park 21:25 Describe the play areas of Bark Park 24:41 Why have a café at bark Park 26:40 The Bark Park play equipment 31:51 Where can we find Bark Park? 32:20 Coming events at Bark Park Want to know more about Bark Park, then you can find them here: Website https://www.barkpark.com.au/ Facebook @barkparkplaycentre Instagram @barkpark_ Ticktok @barkpark_ If you liked the episode, or if you think it'll be useful for someone else, please leave a review on your PODCAST streaming service. So, at the end of 2023, Rosie, Kenji and I had big plans for 2024 including a pugtastic season for the Pug Life Show … then the Pug Life happened, and we find ourselves curly tail deep in family and puggie emergencies (everyone is ok now so breathe a sigh of relief!) and we had started to work on our first Pug-specific clothing line and we all of a sudden found ourselves with no time left to keep in touch regularly on our socials or work on the PUGCAST – horrific I know! I promise you that we slowly chipped away at our to do list and we found some amazing Hooman’s and Puggies to invite onto the Show this year, and although the year is half over, we’re going to deliver 12 episodes as planned at the end of 2023. That means you get a new PUGCAST in your inbox every two weeks! That’s right, we’re releasing a new PUGCAST episode on the 2 nd and 4 th Sunday of the month and we know that you’re going to love the line-up we have panned. If you liked the episode, or if you think it'll be useful for someone else, please leave a review on your PODCAST streaming service. Meet Pug-mom Rachel and her beautiful little girl Agatha, whom you’ll be able to hear snoozing, or should I say snoring, throughout the episode in that ever-so-cute little style that only a Puggie can. This is a wonderful joyful episode about Agatha, how they met and what their Pug Life has been like – especially the anecdote about their bonding within minutes of meeting which I am sure you can relate to. And then there is the question that Rachel had for me … What is wrong with my Pug”? So you’ll have to listen to the episode to find out what was ‘wrong’ with Agatha! In this episode I’ll cover: · 01:40 Being a Pug Hypochondriac and realising that Agatha is going grey. · 03:20 The lovely story behind meeting Agatha, and the puppy scam that almost stopped them from meeting. · 04:35 Bonding with Agatha … their first 10 minutes together. · 06:00 Daphne the Rescue Cat and her influence over Agatha. · 07:30 Agatha’s toilet training by Daphne. · 11:20 Agatha’s ‘object of delight’. · 15:00 Agatha’s love of the ‘R’ word. · 16:00 Agatha’s eating noises. · 18:20 Agatha’s alien behaviour with claw clipping. · 22:00 Agatha’s ‘etiquette’ training. · 25:00 Mum the bouncy castle. · 26:00 Agatha’s interested noise. · 27:00 Agatha is stupid clever. · 31:00 What do well behaved Pugs look like. · 32:00 Agatha loves anything black. · 34:15 Agatha’s first holiday preparation. · 35:45 Agatha the sleepy nugget. · 38:30 Agatha the cult leader. · 41:00 Agatha’s impersonation of the Titanic move. · 42:10 What’s wrong with my Pug? I don’t think I’ve ever met a Pug-Pawrent who hasn’t asked this of themselves or discussed it with another Pug-Pawrent when it comes to making a decision about their Pugs well-being. You know what I’m talking about, Am I feeding them the right food? Am I making the right decision about a veterinary procedure? Am I really capable of caring for a Pug? And the dreaded, Am I making the right decision when it comes to making ‘that’ decision? In this episode, I’m going to share with you some of my “Am I doing the right thing” moments and what I have learned from them so far. In this episode I’m talking about Puggie separation anxiety. Apparently, research has found that ‘one in every 4-6 dogs’ have separation anxiety and that it is ‘more common in older dogs’. What’s more, it can present in different forms and at different times. I’ve experienced Pug-to-Pug separation anxiety between Winston and Charles, and Pug-to-Hooman separation anxiety with Louis and now Kenji, and surprise surprise, no two Pugs are the same when it comes to displaying their anxiety! But the great thing is, there are ways to reduce the impact so that they can live their Pug life to the fullest and we’ll cover all the options in this episode. In this episode I’ll cover: • 01:15 1 in every 4-6 dogs have separation anxiety • 02:35 What is Puggie separation anxiety • 03:40 Steps to help your Puggie overcome separation anxiety • 07:10 When to get professional help • 08:35 My experiences with my Puggies Reference: Dealing with Separation Anxiety in dogs, by Dr Diane van Rooy, University of Melbourne, https://pursuit.unimelb.edu.au/articles/dealing-with-separation-anxiety-in-dogs If you liked the episode, or if you think it'll be useful for someone else, please leave a review on your PODCAST streaming service. In this episode I’m talking about fur-family holidays. We try to go on at least one every year, but I realised just before Easter that we hadn’t been on a proper fur-family holiday for 5 years! So, we decided to book an Airbnb place near the sea at the last minute and enjoy the four days off. But with so much time in between holiday’s I realised just how out of practice I was in making sure we packed everything Rosie and Kenji would need for the trip. So I thought I’d share my packing list with you so you don’t forget anything on your trip and find yourself searching for a pet store in an unfamiliar town praying they stock your Puggies favourite treaties … yes that was us this time round! In this episode I’ll cover: • 02:15 – It’s been 5 years! • 04:00 – The ‘Belt of Power’ • 05:15 – The minimum we pack for a fur-family holiday • 12:45 – What we’d add for a beach holiday • 14:10 – What we’d add for a camping holiday Please note: there’s some Puggie snoring accompanying this episode; it’s not that its boring, they’re still recovering from their amazing holiday!
