Fran Leeman is the founding pastor of LifeSpring Church in Plainfield, Illinois. Along with his wife, Linda, and a few good friends, he has led this church for over 30 years. Fran is also the founder of New Life for Haiti. Fran's book, The Everybody Gospel , chronicles his journey from a conservative evangelical mindset to embracing a bigger and more beautiful God, a richer understanding of the gospel, and those in the LGBTQ community. In today's episode we go deeper into the journey of Pastor Fran and the congregation of LifeSpring Church as they thoughtfully and prayerfully dug deep into the clobber verses in the Bible to see Jesus in those sacred scriptures that seemed to exclude the LGBTG community. Pastor Fran's book, The Everybody Gospel is an account of their brave journey to step out of what they had been taught and allow the Holy Spirit to speak through the scriptures resulting in choosing inclusion of all God's children into their church. When Abe Gurko packed his bags and moved from New York City to Hollywood, he wasn’t leaving a career in the fashion industry to chase the usual dream of becoming a movie star. “I wanted to be a mechanic to the machine called celebrity.” He cultivated his skill set working with arguably the coolest woman in Hollywood, Carrie Fisher and acquired an intimate knowledge of the writing process and had a front row seat to the business of show. His first documentary Louder: The Soundtrack of Change airs on MAX, October 17 and he is in development on Wolf’s Song, a recently discovered piece of music written in a concentration camp as a song of resistance to the Nazis, that is being transformed into a clarion call for social justice today. Abe is living happily ever after in La La Land with his husband, Shlomi and their dog Alfie. Midge Noble is an online resiliency coach, podcaster, author, and speaker. She has published two children’s books, SHEBA, Home Is Where Your Heart Is, and ICE CUBE AWARD, Learning To Be Cool Under Pressure. Her memoir, Gay with God, Reclaiming My Faith, Honoring My Story has just been released! Her podcast, GAY with GOD! can be found wherever you stream your podcasts. Midge specializes in helping her LGBTQIA+ community in their coming out and faith journeys. Her main focus is to stop gay suicides by educating people wounded by the church that they can be in relationship with the God of their understanding and that God does and has always loved us, just as we are created to be. To that end, Midge is very involved in her parish, The Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd. Midge and her wife, along with their fur babies, enjoy spending time at their mountain cabin, hiking, and being with their friends. In this episode I talk about how our rights for inclusion, diversity, authenticity and basic decency are under attack and we, as a community, have to be brave enough to stand up in our power and make a choice. I give some facts on the 180 day playbook that we have heard about that is hitting the news channels and social media. Maya Angelou is credited with saying, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time". We need to pay attention. Matthew Roach (he/him/his) is from Hayesville, NC. Born and raised in the buckle of the Bible Belt, he was submerged in the culture of old fashioned, evangelical religion. All his life he knew he was not a straight male, but the leather lunged, mountain style preaching with hell fire and damnation imagery kept him in the closet, and ultimately led to years of suicidal ideation until he finally found the strength to accept his God-given identity. After confiding in a dear friend of 10 years, he was outed to the church, his family, and friends. As a minister of 8 years, a musician and worship leader since age 8- his coming out was met with intense resistance and ridicule. Through all of the turmoil, the peace and freedom he now experiences has made the journey worthwhile, and he has a newfound excitement for the future. Matthew is in healthcare, is currently studying Medical Sonography, and has plans to relocated after college, and become part of an affirming church in an effort to once and for all love people as God truly calls us all to love. Tina Wood grew up in Knoxville, Tennessee and went to college at Boston University. In her adopted home state of Rhode Island, she was involved in successful efforts to pass several pieces of pro-LGBTQ state legislation over the years, and also runs the email list for LGBTQ news from Rhode Island. She has volunteered as a "search angel" who helps adoptees, birth families, and others who are searching for family and friends over the past several years. In 2018, at request of Kathy Baldock and Ed Oxford, she was able to find Reverend David Sheldon Fearon, who had written a series of letters challenging the translation team of the Revised Standard Version on their usage of the word "homosexual." Reverend Fearon's letters are discussed in the upcoming documentary "1946: The Movie," and Kathy Baldock's upcoming book "Forging a Sacred Weapon: How the Bible Became Anti-Gay." In today's episode, Tina goes into detail how she found, the Reverend David Fearon, the seminarian who challenged the translation in the RSV Bible in regards to the use of the word homosexual. She talks about the movie, 1946 and how that was the year that the mistranslated word, homosexual, was added to the bible for the first time and has been responsible for religious trauma, abuse, and affected the mental health and lives of many queer people who have completed suicide attempts because of the mental anguish due to societal bigotry and religious pressures for us to live inauthentically.
