Will & Josiah, the Holland Brothers were part of the 'Tooth & Nail' experience back in the early-to-mid 00's. First, releasing their debut album under the name 'Holland' and then shifting to 'The Lonely Hearts' because of label recommendation. In another installment of the 'Truth, Soul, Rock & Roll' series of episodes, we're taking a look into another former 'Christian rock band' of the time. We get into a discussion about T&N's approach as a label, how a young adult processes new life experiences amidst a significant amount of grief, and how do you define success when you've 'made it' but are then quickly discarded from those who helped you 'make it'. You're definitely going to enjoy this fantastic episode AND as a side-note, the album 'Photographs & Tidalwaves' was one of my favorite albums throughout all of high school and was consistently in my rotation. After listening to this episode of the podcast be sure to check out the album! Enjoy this brief description of Holland from their Tooth & Nail bio back in the day: Change appears to be a reoccurring theme in the lives of Holland members as of late. Between a new name, record label, and relocation to Nashville, among some personal tragedy (“Losing Jim”, “Bring Back July”), Will (vocals, guitar), Josiah (bass), and Yogi (drums) have had plenty to write about. But it’s this change that makes the best rock songs, and the best rock songs that make the change a little easier to deal with. Holland maximizes these difficulties as art, and turns them into infectiously hooky, four-on-the-floor rock anthems of surprising maturity and substance. Citing influences such as Superdrag, Foo Fighters, and primarily, the Beatles, Holland’s sound and message make perfect sense upon first listen. “Its just that there's such a hungry world out there, starving for any answer. I feel like we've been equipped to tell them something good; that life doesn’t really have to be so hard” Songs like “The Whole World”, featuring an immediately memorable chorus, make clear that Holland intend to drive that positivism home with a vengeance. And perhaps a subliminal message or two. Will Holland’s lyricism is well developed and thoughtful, but his melodies, for sure, are what will cause the widespread epidemic of whistling. Should Holland have their way, it’ll be one of the non-exclusive variety. “The bottom line for us is that we don’t want to be stereotyped and called one thing or another...we just want to make good music, be a good band, and make people happy.” The love isn’t just for the fans either: “[Will’s] the heartbeat of Holland, and personally, I think he’s a genius,” says brother Josiah.…
Robert Burke Warren (or RBW) is quite possibly, one of the most interesting men I've ever had the pleasure of speaking to on this podcast. Between his exploits playing in RuPaul's (yes, THE RuPaul) band when RBW was just 18 years old to his latest book "Cash on Cash" about the man in black, Johnny Cash he has seen and experienced a lot! To quote RBW "Music is the highest form of communication" and we utilize this podcast to communicate about an incredible story from an incredible storyteller. Tune in to find out how RBW answers the questions essential to the essence of the podcast: 1. What does music mean to you? 2. How do you quantify success? 3. And what happens after the music fades? For more programming and advertisement opportunities, please visit www.robertsmediagroup.co About Robert Burke Warren I arrive in the year of Rubber Soul, Highway 61 Revisited, and My Generation: 1965. My Journalism major mom and guitar-playing Marine dad divorce before I turn two. Mom retains custody of my elder brother, Britt, and me. We come of age in Atlanta, in the waning days of the hippie dream and the onset of disco; arts festivals, backwoods, communes, the golden age of Top 40 radio, and a house stocked with books and LPs. My father dies driving drunk a couple weeks after my seventh birthday. Mom returns to school to study medicine. Maternal grandmother, Gammie, steps in to help raise my brother and me. Her husband, my grandfather, Sam F. Lucchese, is the retired entertainment editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution and a stringer for Variety. He still taps furiously on a manual typewriter in the basement of their home, the percussive clickety-clack-BING rising from below while we watch All in the Family and the Carol Burnett Show. My writing gene comes from the Lucchese line. I pen stories and poems and co-edit a newspaper for teens, but in those early days, Dad’s musician genes hold sway, and I focus most of my energy on music. I pick up a bass at fourteen and devote myself to it. Within a couple years, I start a band with my longtime best friend, guitarist Todd Butler. Our singer is superstar-in-exile RuPaul . We call ourselves Wee Wee Pole. We write and perform Prince-inspired material. From Gammie’s kitchen, I book us a tour to Manhattan. I am eighteen. About Cash on Cash As an interviewee, Cash was an exemplary communicator to an astonishingly broad spectrum of people: always open and articulate, part friend, part spiritual authority, part flawed hero. Throughout a decades-long career, as Cash took risks, embracing new technologies, formats, and attitudes, he cleaved to a simple, core message of unvarnished truth.…
The late 90's - early 00's were full of pop music groups such as *NSYNC. But what happens when you are steeped in the Christian Faith but love the sweet hooks of pop music? Enter, Plus One. Plus One enjoyed crossover success in the pop charts for several years before deciding to call it quits. In this latest installment of the Dirty Pop Volume we explore the overall pop genre during the late 90's to early 00's. We will chart an entire genre's rise and fall through the lens of a few unique perspectives In this specific episode we continue our examination of the band Plus One by talking to Nathan Walters about his musical roots, his experience with Plus One (including a short-lived reboot in 2014!), and his current musical production work. Texas-born Garrett Owen had a musical awakening at age 14 that manifested as an intense desire to learn guitar and an insatiable love for all things heavy metal. Eventually, he began exploring other genres, diligently saving his weekly allowance to afford mail-order CDs to satisfy his typical childhood curiosity. But, Owen’s childhood was anything but typical. Instead of Little League and sleepovers, Owen’s earliest memories involve frequent trips across the Serengeti and backyard wildlife most of us only experience at our local zoos. The son of church-building missionaries, he grew up in Tanzania and Kenya, riding on the luggage rack of the family’s Nissan Patrol, with vast clear skies above him and gazelles running beside. After leaving Africa, the family completed a stint in Ecuador before Owen’s parents moved the family back to Texas. Life as he knew it became a difficult endeavor; rimmed with the sharp edges of reality in an unfamiliar place, his attempts to settle into a culture he didn’t understand resulted in distress and a suicide attempt - a far cry from the idyllic landscape of his upbringing. - https://garrett-owen.com/band I have always enjoyed the artistic nature of Garrett's music and was thrilled to get the opportunity to discuss it with him on this episode. While this episode is not part of a larger Volume we are releasing it under the moniker of "B-Sides" since it is a bonus track just for you. Dead Vinyl is a fantastic rock & roll band from Ft. Worth, TX. They will draw you in with their powerhouse sound on hits such as "Till the Cosmos Fall" and then comfort you with the soft melodic sounds of newer songs such as "Let Love Do". I'd be lying if I told you that Dead Vinyl are not friends of mine. The truth is, I've known these guys a very long time and was ecstatic to finally get to record a podcast episode with them. Dead Vinyl consists of: Hayden Miller on Vocals, Zach Tucker on Bass, Parker Anderson on Drums, and Tyler Vela on Guitar. While we unfortunately did not get to record with Tyler on this episode Hayden, Parker, and Zach take us through the various iterations of their bands before forming Dead Vinyl, there are a lot of stories and even more laughs. I was so fortunate to get to talk to these three guys a few months ago and I hope you enjoy it even half as much as we did. While this episode is not part of a larger Volume we are releasing it under the moniker of "B-Sides" since it is a bonus track just for you. Tune in to find out how the Dead Vinyl crew answers the questions essential to the essence of the podcast: 1. What does music mean to you? 2. How do you quantify success? 3. And what happens after the music fades? Described as poetic pop, Deza’s music is familiar yet fresh, sitting sonically at the crux of artists like Tove Lo & Jon Bellion. Combining elements of today's top-40 with an unheard emotional intensity, Deza is bringing a much needed dose of authentic storytelling back into the pop realm. Her honest vulnerability recently caught the eye of hit songwriter, Emily Warren, who has credits with Dua Lipa, The Chainsmokers, Sigrid, Lennon Stella, and so many more. Deza is now the first and only writer signed to Emily's brand new publishing company, Under Warrenty, alongside Prescription Songs. With this new signing, Deza has effortlessly catapulted herself into the upper echelon of today's hit writers. After the Encore Volume 3: Dirty Pop took a deep dive into an entire genre of pop music, the boyband era. We learned a lot about *NSYNC, Plus One, Youth Asylum, and O-Town. However, what did host Joe Shaw notice throughout each episode? The continuous questions asked in each episode of this podcast are the following: 1. What does music mean to you? 2. How do you quantify success? 3. And what happens after the music fades? Joe invites former guest Nate Cole back to the podcast to discuss specific themes picked out in the overall Volume, what Joe has learned about himself while interviewing the guests, and a preview of what's on the horizon for Volume 4 of After the Encore. Volume 3: Dirty Pop explores the overall pop genre during the late 90's to early 00's. We will chart an entire genre's rise and fall through the lens of a few unique perspectives. Is success formulaic? Can you manufacture it? What happens when you've followed the formula for success but neglected the people involved? Kevin Yee was part of Youth Asylum a, in his words, failed boyband experiment. We've looked of various degrees of success within the pop genre but now we examine what happens when things just don't work out. However, while Youth Asylum didn't quite work out Kevin Yee has had an impressive career. From being in the original Broadway production of Mary Poppins, to his stand-up special on Hulu, to now featuring in "Dickinson" on AppleTV+ Kevin's impact on the world is far greater than Youth Asylum. Kevin details that experience for us and discusses his experiences trying to raise visibility for other folks within both the Asian and LGBTQ+ community. DISCLAIMER - This is the first time I've put an explicit warning on an episode because of the final song that plays. However, we had to include it since it's Kevin's biggest hit. A mixture of comedy & music. Enjoy ;) Volume 3: Dirty Pop explores the overall pop genre during the late 90's to early 00's. Michael Lee is a Fort Worth based Blues artist. Raised around blues music his entire life, Michael spent the majority of his young life in blues clubs receiving an ivy league education from watching and playing with blues legends such as Andrew "Jr Boy" Jones (Freddie King), Buddy Whittington (John Mayall), Lucky Peterson (Willie Dixon). On nights he was not in the blues clubs he was down in the stockyards soaking in the Country sounds which emanated from those honky tonks. Like Delbert McClinton and many Fort Worth musicians before him, Michael’s style of music has the perfect blend of Blues and Country. Michael Lee was one of the contestants that blew the coaches away and surprised them once they turned around. The singer shocked coaches by having the deep tone to sing B.B.King’s “The Thrill Is Gone.” Adam Levine, Jennifer Hudson, and Blake Shelton turned around for his performance. Michael Lee turned his limited run on The Voice into something no one could have foreseen. Take a listen!
