Rami Lavi opens the show talking about the scary scene on Thursday Night Football between the Bills and Dolphins. Rami says Tua's new contract could alter his decision from the one he made in 2022. Also, Mike McDaniel continues to prove he is a great head coach. Aaron Rodgers had a strongly worded message to Jets fans, imploring them stick with the team through the ups and the downs of a long NFL season. Caleb Williams makes his NFL regular season debut at home against the Titans. Gabe ( @chicago_gabe ), Marshall ( @mharrrisonair ), and Clay ( @clayharbs82 ) give predictions on how much the Bears will pass vs. run, how many takeaways there will be, and they discuss just how good Tennessee is. Plus they predict the playoff teams for the 2024 season.…
The Tennessee Titans clearly did not feel they came out of the preseason with everything they needed from a personnel standpoint. Not only did they make the mandatory cuts to get to the regular-season limit of 53 players, they subsequently made some trades, claimed three players off waivers and made a handful of other moves. ... Among the biggest surprises of all the transactions is the fact that the Titans will enter Week 1 with five tight ends on the roster, even though they plan to use plenty of wide receivers. ... The trades included the acquisition of fourth-year linebacker Ernest Jones. To get a guy who was a starter for most of his three years with the Los Angeles Rams, Tennessee seemingly gave up little. ... Tennessee was No. 7 in waiver position and used that spot to claim three players -- all on defense and all with extensive special teams experience -- that their prior teams had hoped to retain as members of their practice squad. ... Trades also sent two players packing. Defensive back Elijah Molden, a third-round pick in 2021, went to the Los Angeles Chargers, and quarterback Malik Willis, a third-round pick in 2022, went to Green Bay, and each brought a seventh-round pick in return.…
The Titans improved to 2-0 in the preseason with Saturday's 16-15 victory over the Seattle Seahawks, and they did so with the help of an unlikely hero. Rookie kicker Brayden Narveson made three-fourth-quarter field goals, including a 59-yarder that gave Tennessee its first lead and a 46-yard game-winner as time expired. Even so, the best he can hope is that it was enough for another team to want to sign him. ... Malik Willis was the Titans' starting quarterback against the Seahawks, but in the critical moments of that contest it was Mason Rudolph under center. That probably says all there is to say about whether Willis has any chance to be Will Levis' backup. ... While the issue at backup quarterback might be settled, other spots are up for grabs. Perhaps the most interesting battle is between Hassan Haskins and Julius Chestnut for the final running back spot. Others like linebacker Chance Campbell, wide receiver Jha'Quan Jackson, outside linebacker Jaylen Harrell and tight end David Martin-Robinson are among those who have found ways to stand out and have made strong cases to make the final roster. ... This week, Netflix premiered its latest episode of Untold , this one on former Titans quarterback Steve McNair and the circumstances surrounding his murder. The program did not reveal any new information except for one notable item -- a long-sought revelation from former coach Jeff Fisher. McNair's college glory days at Alcorn State also were detailed this week in an ESPN.com story. ... The starters will be back in action Sunday against the New Orleans Saints, and there are reasons to think it will be a beneficial performance in the final prep for the regular season.…
Robby Stanley of the Nashville morning sports talk show Robbie and Rexrode (102.5-FM, The Game) fills in for the vacationing John Glennon to talk all things Titans. ... The preseason opener against San Francisco ended with the Titans getting a 17-13 win. It started will all of San Francisco's big names on the sideline while most of Tennessee's number-ones played a quarter or more. It ended with players and coaches saying any win (even in the preseason) is an important step toward making winning a habit. ... Quarterback Will Levis, who directed two scoring drives in that game, made national headlines days later with the release of Will Levis Cologne, a fragrance inspired by his love for mayonnaise. But did he and the creators use the wrong mayonnaise as their inspiration? ... After two days of joint workouts with the Seattle Seahawks, coach Brian Callahan said he does not need to see the starters play against the Seahawks in Saturday's preseason contest at Nissan Stadium. ... Malik Willis will be the Titans' starting quarterback against Seattle, which could be his opportunity to lock down a roster spot or an opportunity to showcase him as a potential trade target. ... If the San Francisco game is an accurate indictor, the Titans are well-positioned to take advantage of the NFL's new kickoff rules.…
Days before their preseason opener, the Tennessee Titans found out the player they expected to be their starter at right guard, Saadiq Charles, had decided to retire at just 25 years old. Charles' decision creates a new opportunity for 2021 second-round pick Dillon Radunz, and adds to the questions that already exist about the offensive line overall, the right side in particular. ... More than two weeks into training camp, Tennessee finally signed veteran safety Quandre Diggs, a three-time Pro Bowler who did not miss a single game over the past four seasons with Seattle. Diggs does not have great size -- he is 5-foot-9, 197 pounds -- but he adds elements of speed and range that likely have been missing from the rear of the defensive backfield. ... Coach Brian Callahan said all starters who are healthy enough -- with the exceptions of defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons and outside linebacker Harold Landry -- should expect to play some against San Francisco. That will be a distinct departure from recent years under Mike Vrabel and should give an indication of how well players have picked up the new schemes installed by Callahan and his staff. ... As always, newcomers and players down the depth chart will be the ones to watch in the preseason. This year, that includes guys like rookie defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat, who has to show he is as good as he has looked on the practice field, and third-year quarterback Malik Willis, who this time is fighting for a roster spot.…
Jeffery Simmons got into a couple of fights during the first of this year's Tennessee Titans training camp practices with players in full pads. It's not necessarily a huge deal now, but it is not the kind of behavior that can be repeated during a game, and -- for one of the team's leaders -- it certainly does not set a good example. ... Things got worse when, after practice, Simmons confronted a local sports talk radio host, who was on the air at the time, in a vulgar rant to protest something the host wrote on X. It should be no surprise to Simmons (or anyone else) that not everything you see on X is happy and positive. He needs to deal with such things much better. ... A day later, Simmons did apologize, but there was no way to go back in time and undo what he did. ... It was reported this week that outside linebacker Arden Key will miss the first six games of this season for violation of the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing drugs. The Titans are not exactly flush with talent at that position. Yes, there are options to replace Key, but it is possible that the personnel department will have to sign a still-available free agent to adequately deal with the situation. ... Speaking of players still available, former Titans quarterback recently spoke about his current situation on a podcast and made it clear that is his not sitting at home just waiting for the phone to ring. It also seems clear, though, that if the right call comes, he will be more than happy to take it and to get back to work.…
Will Levis had the worst completion percentage among all qualifying NFL quarterbacks in 2023. Head coach Brian Callahan has said improvement in that regard is a central mission for the staff and for Levis this season. Some of that improvement will have to come from Levis himself, via his decision-making and his understanding of a new playbook and offensive philosophy, not to mention experience. Some will have to come from the offensive line and receivers who can make his job that much easier. ... Speaking of Levis, he certainly looked the part of a starting quarterback in the NFL as he traveled the world. walked some red carpets and did what he could to assert himself as the leader of the offense. He also has been a refreshing and interesting interview, unlike most of his recent predecessors with this franchise. It all paints a picture of a young man who is willing to embrace the stardom that typically comes with playing the game's most important position, even if he has not yet established himself as a star. ... General manager Ran Carthon said he expects a consensus of franchise decision-makers will produce the 53-man roster at the end of the preseason. It sounds nice but also is not likely realistic. Having been promoted to Executive Vice President/General Manager early in the offseason, he has to show that he is willing and able to make the final call when necessary. ... Callahan has said that starters should expect to see action in all three preseason games, which is a serious departure from the how the previous coaching staff approached things. Given all the offseason changes, it seems to be a prudent approach.…
The Tennessee Titans prepped for training camp by announcing seven hires and 13 promotions within the football operations and personnel departments. In case anyone wondered how much power general manager Ran Carthon currently wields, it is apparent now that he has things set up the way he wants. ... Ralph Ockenfels announced his retirement after 26 seasons in the front office, most recently as Vice President of Business Development. Whatever role he filled, he worked to improve the fan experience and to strengthen the connection between the team and its supporters. A salute to Ralph Ockenfels. ... Carthon finally made a long-anticipated move with the addition of a veteran safety, in this case Jamal Adams. The sixth overall pick in 2017 by the New York Jets, Adams is a three-time Pro Bowler who has played just 10 games over the past two seasons due to injuries. There are legitimate questions about how much he actually will contribute, but his connection to and familiarity with defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson is reason for optimism. ... A recent article in The Athletic revealed that the Titans agreed with the Baltimore Ravens on a fourth-round pick (it could have been a third) for running back Derrick Henry last year at the trade deadline but someone other than Carthon ultimately nixed the deal. So, should Tennessee have made that trade? And who is likely the one who wouldn't do it? ... With the start of training camp a week away, we look at the questions that need answers ahead of the regular season. ... Finally, ESPN only ranked two Titans among the top 10 in the NFL at their respective positions, and both barely cracked the top five.…
The Fourth of July falls at a time of inactivity for the NFL, but for the Tennessee Titans, it is an unforgettable day. It has now been 15 years since Steve McNair was murdered in Nashville, and the 2003 NFL co-MVP remains the standard by which all of the franchise's quarterbacks of the Titans era (1999-present) are measured. ... Countering the optimism among the fan base about the likelihood that the offensive line will be better this year, Pro Football Focus says Tennessee is headed to training camp with the NFL's 30th-best blocking unit. Uncertainty about who will start on the right side and the reliance on youth on the left likely figure into that determination, which seems -- nonetheless -- harsh. ... Former general manager Jon Robinson made a couple of deals to trade up in the 2022 draft to select wide receiver Treylon Burks (first round) and quarterback Malik Willis (third round). Now, both are regularly mentioned as players who could or should be traded before the regular season arrives. Is there merit to that line of thought, and if so, what might each bring in return? ... When it comes to setting the 53-man roster, wide receiver is a spot that varies widely in the number of players teams typically keep. Tennessee has more talent at that spot this year and plenty of options. So, what is a reasonable number of wide receivers to keep, and who might they be?…
The Tennessee Titans will be a different team in 2024. They have a new head coach in Brian Callahan, a bunch of new players led by wide receiver Calvin Ridley and cornerback L'Jarius Sneed, and hope that things will be better. Without question, there are reasons for optimism. So, what are they? ... National media outlets and sports betting services are not that optimistic. In fact, they are particularly pessimistic. From projected 2025 draft positions to odds for the 2024 season, it is not easy to find those who think the Titans will have a tough time this season. ... Some of the thinking the fuels the naysayers is understandable. Some of it seems completely misguided.…
It is mandatory minicamp week for the Tennessee Titans, which means all players under contract are in attendance at the facility. Not all of them are involved in on-field work, though. What is keeping them in the training room is anybody's guess, though, because -- as was the case with the former coaching staff -- no one is willing to discuss injuries at this time of year. ... One player not taking part in drills is second-round draft pick T'Vondre Sweat. Coach Brian Callahan says Sweat's injury is nothing serious, but history shows that health issues have a way of lingering with rookies. ... As expected, quarterback Will Levis is getting a lot of attention this offseason, from the media and the coaches. There's a lot to like about the second-year signal-caller, but there is also a lot on which he can improve. The question is whether those are things that can be fixed. ... Recent first-round picks Caleb Farley (2021) and Treylon Burks (2022) are getting a lot of work on special teams. After failing to live up to expectations last year, it seems much less is expected of both in 2024. Based on where it seems they reside on the depth chart, neither should expect to stay on the roster if they can't contribute on special teams. ... More players continue to speak about the relaxed nature of things under Callahan as compared to his predecessor, Mike Vrabel.…
DeAndre Hopkins was as good as advertised in his first season with the Tennessee Titans. In his first full offseason with them, he is showing that he is nothing like the sullen, disinterested participant, as he was portrayed at other stops in his career. ... This week, the veteran wide receiver answered questions about Treylon Burks, Tennessee's 2022 first-round pick, and then took to social media a day later to clarify his remarks with the assessment that no one in the locker room is sleeping on the player who has been pushed down the positional depth chart due to a couple of notable offseason acquisitions. ... With Hopkins, Calvin Ridley and Tyler Boyd, Tennessee seemingly has the best wide receiver trio of its Titans era (1999-present). Is there any other trio that even comes close? Does this mean a traditionally run-first franchise will throw the ball a lot more this season. ... After last week's schedule release, Marcus Mosher of The 33rd Team called the Titans "a sleeper team" but also predicted they would finish last in ther AFC South. Those two things seem to be counterintuitive, but it is also to understand the thinking behind each.…
The Tennessee Titans will open the 2024 season on the road against the Chicago Bears. That means they get first crack at the first pick in this year's draft, quarterback Caleb Williams. ... This will be the fourth time in five years that Tennessee plays against the quarterback who was taken first overall. For the most part, they have done well in those encounters. ... Williams is not the only quarterback taken in the first round the Titans might face this season. Potential matchups also await with Jayden Daniels and Washington, Drake Maye and New England, and J.J. McCarthy and Minnesota. ... A Week 5 bye precedes what might be the most challenging stretch of the season, the first division game of the year followed by road games against a pair of Super Bowl contenders. ... The stretch from early November to the start of December will first-year coach Brian Callahan match wits with three others who are in their first season in charge of their respective franchises. ... Five of the last seven games will be against AFC South opponents, including two against Jacksonville in December. ... If you can only make one home game this season, there are several interesting options. The same is true if you can only make one road game.…
The Titans prepared for this weekend's rookie camp by signing the last four of this year's seven draft picks to contracts. ... Ahead of that camp, veterans are engaged in organized team activities. One person who is not there -- but is coming -- is veteran wide receiver Tyler Boyd, who previously played in Cincinnati and had new Tennessee coach Brian Callahan as his offensive coordinator. ... Along with DeAndre Hopkins and Calvin Ridley, Boyd gives the Titans three veteran wide receivers who have combined for more than 1,700 receptions in their careers, which is a far cry from the inexperienced, unproductive group they had in 2023. Boyd's familiarity with Callahan's offense should help those others, plus quarterback Will Levis, get up to speed more quickly. ... Boyd's addition is not good news for 2022 first-round draft pick Treylon Burks. By all accounts, Burks is having a good offseason. But every indication is that he is no better than No. 4 on the positional depth chart. Callahan continues to say that Burks will get what he earns in terms of playing time and opportunities for receptions. It is likely that he will have to work extremely hard to get any opportunity. ... Levis noted that there are two notable differences with Callahan in charge rather than Mike Vrabel. First, the second-year quarterback has been told that the Titans will throw the ball on early downs and in a variety of situations. Second, there is more give-and-take between players and coaches, which has made a number of previously quiet players feel comfortable about speaking up and adding energy. ... The rookie camp will be the first opportunity for some first-year players to show they are up to the task of being professionals and possibly could make significant contributions in 2024.…
After they selected tackle JC Latham in the first round, the Tennessee Titans doubled down on big men when they chose Texas defensive lineman T'Vondre Sweat, the 2023 Outland Trophy winner, in the second round. At 366 pounds, Sweat is the heaviest draft pick in franchise history, topping by just a couple pounds the mark Latham set a day earlier. ... The last time Tennessee drafted a player who weighed 350 pounds or more, things did not work out well. It won't take much for one or both of these guys to do much better. ... In addition to his size, Sweat arrives with some sizable question marks, primarily whether he can be an every-down player and whether a recent DWI incident is indicative of character issues. Some felt the Titans could have gotten him much later in the draft, but it is easy to imagine how his bulk could make a huge difference on the defense. ... Among the third-day picks, two of them could combine to make a complete player, one followed one of his college teammates to the Titans, and one looks to be very much in the mold of a couple of this year's free-agent additions.…
The Tennessee Titans surprised virtually no one when they selected a tackle in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft. With a glaring need at the position and a host of top prospects available, they went with Alabama's JC Latham (6-foot-6, 360 pounds), who was a two-year starter at right tackle in college. ... Latham is unusually athletic for his size was a left tackle in high school, where he became the country's top-ranked offensive line prospect, and impressed Titans coaches during pre-draft interviews. All of that factors into the team's belief that his transition to the left side in the NFL will be smooth. ... Oddsmakers had Notre Dame's Joe Alt as the Titans' most likely selection, but he ultimately was not available when Tennessee was on the clock at No. 7. Indications are, though, that the Titans might have taken Latham even if Alt was available. ... In addition to the tackles, there were other notable prospects at several positions available to the Titans. Plus, a number of teams called with trade offers. Ultimately, though, general manager Ran Carthon elected to stay put and go with Latham. ... In his post-draft press conference, Latham came across as intelligent, well-spoken, enthusiastic and highly motivated, all of which should make him someone Titans fans easily can root for. ... Latham's addition seemingly settles things on the left side of the offebnsive line. The right side, however, is a different issue. ... With two days and seven rounds remaining in the draft, the Titans still have needs to fill. They hold the sixth pick of the second round, which likely will generate more trade opoportunities, and then won't pick again until the fourth round.…
With one week to go before the 2024 NFL Draft, the Tennessee Titans still hold the No. 7 overall selection. Speculation on who they will pick there centers on Notre Dame tackle Joe Alt, who projects as a player who could step in immediately at left tackle. Former NFL executive Mark Dominik said this week, however, that the Titans can still get a good tackle in the second round (No. 38 overall) and are likely to go in a different direction with their first choice. ... Dominik also classified wide receiver as a "luxury pick" for the Titans and suggested that they will not use any of their seven draft picks on that position. ... With so much speculation about adding to the offense, what about the defense. Specifically, what about edge rusher given that the Titans' sack leader from a year ago, Denico Autry, is now with the Houston Texans? ... Tennessee has added another tackle already this week when it traded with Cleveland for Leroy Watson, who played just 55 sacks last year but worked under the Titans' current offensive line coach Bill Callahan. ... Similarly, one former Titans tackle, Andre Dillard, has a new team. He becomes the latest tackle to get another opportunity after a failing spectacularly with Tennessee.…
When he addressed his players at the start of the offseason program, first-year coach Brian Callahan said he wants the Tennessee Titans to be "relentless and resilient." Another professional sports team in Nashville has gotten a lot of mileage recently out of the former while not long ago the Titans showed plenty of the latter. ... Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson continues to entertain in his media sessions. In his latest, he talked about how he will not let opposing offenses dictate what his unit does and his notion that the game is played 11-on-1. ... Offensive coordinator Nick Holz won't have to familiarize himself with free-agent wide receiver Calvin Ridley. The two were together last season in Jacksonville, and Holz shared some insights about what the Titans and their fans should expect to see. ... One position group that has gone largely overlooked this offseason is tight end. The Titans have not yet added anyone at that position, and the returning players do not offer a lot of experience or a history of production. ... A red flag was raised with one draft prospect a day before he was to meet with the Titans. The only way to know what impact that will have is to wait and see whether the Titans -- given the opportunity -- actually draft him.…
When he met the Nashville media for the first time, recently acquired cornerback L'Jarius Sneed declared himself "a hell of a player." The personal assessment came off as well-earned confidence as opposed to blustery arrogance and given his play for the Kansas City Chiefs in recent years, it is easy to understand why he feels that way. ... The pairing of Sneed and free-agent addition Chidoe Awuzie gives the Titans a well-matched pair of cornerbacks who will attempt to create a clear identity under new defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson. ... With those cornerbacks and free-agent wide receiver Calvin Ridley, general manager Ran Carthon and his staff addressed two of the team's biggest offseason positional needs. Offensive line still needs obvious attention, likely with the first-round pick in this year's draft. But what other position or positions should the Titans address in the 2024 NFL Draft. ... The Titans are not the only AFC South team that made a big change recently. Days after the Sneed deal, the Houston Texans acquired wide receiver Stefon Diggs in a trade with Buffalo. That made an already good offseason for the Texans even better, but the good news for the Titans is that Sneed has a history of keeping Diggs in check.…
The Tennessee Titans' offseason spending spree continued with the acquisition of cornerback L'Jarius Sneed in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. The transaction did not cost the Titans much in terms of what they sent to the Chiefs, but they did agree to a four-year, $76.4 million contract extension with Sneed. ... The trade not only solidifies Tennessee's depth chart at the position, it gives them arguably their best group of cornerbacks in recent memory. And given what Sneed accomplished in his years with Kansas City, he has a chance to be the franchise's best cornerback of the Titans era. ...The additions of Sneed and fellow cornerback Chidobe Awuzie do not mean that Carthon and Co. are done restocking the secondary. There are plenty of veteran safeties available, and it seems likely the Titans eventually will add one of them. ... The Los Angeles Chargers currently have the fifth overall pick in the 2024 draft, and their coach, Jim Harbaugh, has indicated that he would like to build his team's offensive line. Given the Titans' needs up front, it is possible that the Chargers could have a major impact on what Tennessee does with its first pick, No. 7 overall. ... The NFL announced a major change to kickoff rules this week based on what took place last spring in the XFL. The idea is to make it a more exciting play than it has been in recent years but far less dangerous than it has been historically.…
The Tennessee Titans filled their opening for a backup quarterback when they signed Mason Rudolph to a one-year, $2.87 million contract. In six seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers, the 2018 third-round pick started just 13 games but one eight (with one tie). His deal means the current quarterbacks will count fewer than $7 million against the Titans' salary cap, a far cry from a year ago when Ryan Tannehill's cap hit was more than $36 million. ... Speaking of Tannehill, the now-former Tennessee quarterback remains unsigned and clearly is the best available player at his position. It is not clear whether he has not found the opportunity or deal that he seeks, or if he is better served waiting until after the draft to find a new home. It seems likely, however, that the rest of the league doesn't see his potential role the same way he does. ... Two less-heralded deals went to players on the defense, lineman Sebastian Joseph-Day and linebacker Kenneth Murry. Day was a sixth-round pick in 2018 who quickly established himself as a reliable and versatile -- if not spectacular -- performer. Murray, on the other hand, never has lived up to his status as a 2020 first-round selection, but at 25 there is a chance his best days are to come -- and that a change of scenery could help.…
The Tennessee Titans made a big splash in the opening hours of the NFL's 2024 free agent signing period when they agreed to terms with wide receiver Calvin Ridley on a four-year, $92 million contract. ... All of the talk during the legal tampering period was that Ridley would choose between his former team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, and the New England Patriots. The Titans, however, had plenty of money to spend, and they ultimately threw a lot of it at Ridley, a 2018 first-round draft pick by Atlanta who has twice topped 1,000 receiving yards in a season. ... Ridley will team with DeAndre Hopkins to give the Titans what looks to be one of their most potent receiving tandems ever. But does it completely eliminate the possibility that they will use their first-round pick in next month's draft on a wide receiver? Not necessarily. ... Ridley is not the only player the Titans have added early in free agency. Far from it. In Lloyd Cushenberry, they have a center who is a proven starter but is young enough for franchise officials to believe his best days are still ahead of him. What is certain is that he is much larger and more physically imposing than the man he replaces, Aaron Brewer. ... Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie steps into a defensive backfield that was inconsistent (at best) in 2024. In the last three years at Cincinnati, he showed position versatility and established himself as a reliable tackler. ... Running back Tony Pollard joins last year's third-round pick Tyjae Spears in the backfield. He also changes the dynamic of the position group, relative to recent years when franchise officials liked to have complementary pieces. Pollard and Spears have much in common when it comes to their skill sets. ... The man Pollard effectively replaced, Derrick Henry, has moved on to another team, one that has a history of signing former Titans stars late in their careers. ... Two starters on last season's defense, Denico Autry and Azeez Al-Shaair, moved on as well -- to a division rival.…
The Tennessee Titans opted not to use their franchise or transition tags on running back Derrick Henry or anyone else. Instead, general manager Ran Carthon and the rest of the personnel staff held opted to look ahead to the free agency signing period, which starts in a week. Tennessee will enter the start of the new league year more than $75 million under the salary cap, which means it has more to spend than all but two other NFL franchises. ... After a 6-11 season, the Titans have no shortage of personnel needs, which means there are plenty of potential free-agent targets available. We look at who Carthon and Co. might want at obvious positions of need such as tackle or wide receiver as well as other spots. ... In stark contrast to Tennessee, the Buffalo Bills have shed salary in recent days and have cut a handful of notable players, at least of couple of whom ought to be of interest to the Titans. ... Similarly, the Philadelphia Eagles recently released Kevin Bayrd. So, what is likely next for the former Tennessee Titans safety? ... Free agency is bound to shape what the Titans do in the draft overall, but what happens with the first six overall picks in that draft will be the biggest factor in what the Titans do with their first selection, No. 7 overall. The apparent rise of one quarterback prospect could play a prominent role in that scenario. ... Since it looks as if Henry is headed to free agency, what is his most likely destination for the 2024 season?…
The Tennessee Titans started the week with three more additions to their coaching staff. One new assistant coach has direct ties to the head man, Brian Callahan. Another, like Callahan, is a second-generation coach. ... As the NFL free agency period approaches, the Titans have made no noticeable moves to retain any players whose contracts will soon expire. They also have a bunch of money to spend once the signing period commences. ... Some big-name wide receivers around the league are in the final weeks of their current contracts and could be available soon, but the one guy among them who makes the most sense (and who most excites the fan base) likely will not be available once the time comes. ... Largely overlooked among Tennessee's current needs is an experienced backup quarterback who can help Will Levis and keep the offense going, if needed. One such player who has proven himself in that regard (and who has beaten the Titans) is headed to free agency and makes a lot of sense. ... Cornerback is another area of need. It is also a challenge to find the right fit at that position on the free-agent market. ... After free agency comes the draft. Right now, the Titans have the seventh overall pick (first round) and 38th overall pick (second round) with no third-round selection. Which would be better: Make those two picks as scheduled early in those rounds or trade one or both in order to amass more selections overall? ... Like every other team, Tennessee still has time to re-sign some of its players and keep them from free agency. Among those in that situation, there is one member of the 2023 Titans who franchise officials should do what they can to make sure he is a member of the 2024 Titans.…
Not long ago, in two regular-season meetings and one postseason matchup, the Tennessee Titans looked every bit the equal of the Kansas City Chiefs, or as close to it as any NFL team. Now, like every other franchise, the Titans are looking up at the Chiefs, winners of three of the last five Super Bowls, and trying to figure out how to match up. ... A look back at Sunday's Super Bowl LVIII, how Kansas City won and the challenge of dealing with the combination of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and coach Andy Reid. ... The big game, of course, stirred memories of the Titans' lone Super Bowl appearance, and Denard Walker recalled a meaningful show of support from then-coach Jeff Fisher following that defeat against the St. Louis Rams. ... Defensive coordinator Dennard Wilson invoked General George Patton when asked about how he will run that unit under coach Brian Callahan. It is an approach that should excite the players in the system and should look familiar to long-time Tians fans given its ties for former Titans coach Jeff Fisher and defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. ... Offensive coordinator Nock Holz sais he expects "speed, detail and execution" from his unit. One of those things currently is in short supply with that unit. ... The position coaches include two have been Titans assistants, previously. Tracy Rocker (defensive line) and Frank Bush (linebackers) filled those same roles under Mike Munchak, who was head coach from 2011-13.…

It is Super Bowl week, and Denard Walker reflects on how he navigated the myriad media responsibilities he and the rest of the Tennessee Titans faced ahead of their meeting with the St. Louis Rams in Super Bowl XXXIV. ... The prevailing wisdom among this panel is that the Kansas City Chiefs look like the team to beat this week because of A) the continued greatness of quarterback Patrick Mahomes and B) a better defense than they have had in other recent championship seasons. ... The Titans' new offensive coordinator Nick Holz, who does not have a lengthy professional résumé but who goes back a long way with coach Brian Callahan -- all the way to high school, in fact. ... Holz won't be the play-caller on offense, but his history suggests he can make a significant impact even if he does not perform high-profile duties. ... One reported member of the new coaching staff is former Titants defense back Steve Jackson, who was an important -- if not omnipresent -- member of the franchise's 1999 Super Bowl team. Like Holz, Jackson has some personal history with Callahan, albeit their connection only goes back a few years when they were assistant coaches with the Cincinnati Bengals. ... Former Titans coach Mike Vrabel still has not found a job, and one report in recent days offers a bizarre and tough-to-believe reason for why that is. As of now, it seems that Vrabel will end up with -- in some capacity -- his best friend as a part of a high-profile college football program.…
It already is clear that new Tennessee Titans head coach Brian Callahan plans to overhaul significantly the team's coaching staff. ... There have been no official announcements about assistant coaches, but the latest reporting indicates that the Cleveland Browns granted Bill Callahan -- Brian Callahan's father and a long-time, well-respected offensive line coach -- permission to explore the possibility of joining his son's staff. The report further indicates that the Browns won't stand in his way if he wants to leave them. ... The elder Callahan will be the second position coach on offense to be hired. Reports already indicate that Tyke Tolbert, who spent the past two seasons with the Chicago Bears, will fill that role. One of the members of this podcast actually was coached by Tolbert more than two decades ago. ... Dennard Wilson, who spent last season as Baltimore's defensive backs coach and the two seasons before that in the same position with Philadelphia, reportedly has been tapped to serve as defensive coordinator. A rising star, Wilson reportedly had other opportunities this offseason and likely would have had even more had he waited, but he opted to take on the opportunity to lead the Titans' defense. ... With all of the NFL's head coaching vacancies now filled, former coach Mike Vrabel seems destined to sit out the 2024 season. With no significant record as a defensive coordinator, that seems like an unlikely option for him even if he wanted to get back to work quickly. The real question now seems to be how much of the time off he will use to reflect on the reasons for his dismissal and whether he will do some things differently when (of if) he gets another opportunity to be a head coach.…
The episode begins with a nod to a former Tennessee Titans linebacker, Terry Killens, who will make history when Super Bowl LVII is played in Las Vegan. ... Brian Callahan's first public act as Tennessee Titans head coach was an introductory press conference Thursday. The 49-year-old son of former Oakland Raiders head coach Bill Callahan showed much emotion when he discussed those who influenced him most in his professional journey but did not display much of an ego when he reviewed the career path he traveled that got him to this point. ... In previous jobs, Callahan worked with accomplished quarterbacks Peyton Manning, Matthew Stafford and Derek Carr well into their respective careers. He noted that things he learned from those players should help him as he works to develop current Titans quarterback Will Levis. ... Callahan says he is eager to meet his new players, but Denard Walker says the majority of those introductions will have to wait. Most players won't be around the facility for the next few months. ... Callahan has not been a head coach at any level of football, but he does have the benefit of having watched his father do it and having spent time in NFL facilities as a youngster. He also has the benefit of the past five seasons as offensive coordinator with the Cincinnati Bengals under Zac Taylor, who effectively groomed Callahan for this opportunity. ... The same day she signed Callahan to a contract, controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk promoted Ran Carthon to executive vice president/general manager, which makes him the final voice on all personnel decisions. Additionally, Chad Brinker was promoted to president of football operations, which places him second in line behind Carthon. ... The moves eliminate any chance for Callahan to make an early grab for power and provides clarity in the decision-making process. It is not clear, however, whether this was a good decision or a means for Adams Strunk to pass the buck.…
A week into their search for a new head coach, the Tennessee Titans have confirmed interviews with four candidates, Baltimore defensive coordinator Mike McDonald, N.Y. Giants offensive coordinator Mike Kafka, Las Vegas interim head coach Antonio Pierce and Cincinnati offensive coordinator Brian Callahan. According to reports, they have requested permission to interview 10 coaches, some of whose teams remain alive in the NFL playoffs. ... Callahan looks like the first to emerge as a serious candidate, and his family ties could make for an interesting addition to his staff. ... Detroit defensive coordinator Aaron Glenn is on his list. While he never has been a head coach, his work as an assistant has been well-received by players with his current and former franchises. ... Most of those the Titans want to interview also have drawn interest from other teams in search of a coach. If it comes down to it, does Tennessee have enough in its favor that someone would choose to coach the Titans over another team? ... Thus far, former coach Mike Vrabel has not drawn a lot of reported interest. That either means his work with the Titans was not as highly regarded as some might think or he simply plans to sit out a year or more before he returns to an NFL sideline. ... While he says he will be forever a Titan, Derrick Henry's latest public comments suggest that he will be on a different sideline in a different uniform in 2024 -- and he is fine with that. The soon-to-be free agent says the most important thing at this stage of hs career is to be with a team that has a legitimate chance to win the Super Bowl.…
Tennessee Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk fired coach Mike Vrabel on Tuesday, two days after the final game of the 2023 season. Vrabel is the third-winningest coach in franchise history and one of three to guide the team at least as far as the AFC Championship game. ... The decision was not necessarily a shock, given reports about his job status in recent weeks. However, Strunk offered no concrete answer to the question of why she made the move, and general manager Ran Carthon followed up with even less clarity on the issue at a press conference. Similarly, no one was willing – or able – to provide any detail about what they hope to find in Vrabel's replacement. ... Vrabel was 6-18 over his final 24 regular season contests, but posted a winning record (54-45) overall. Plus, his winning percentage in games decided by seven points or fewer was even better, and his winning percentage in games decided by three points or fewer was even better than that. Regardless of overall talent, his teams displayed consistency in several key areas that will be difficult to replicate. ... The general thinking is that Vrabel, the 2021 NFL Coach of the Year, will get another job as quickly as he wants to get back to work. At present, there are six other NFL franchises in search of a head coach, but his ultimate destination might be someplace else. ... Sunday's 28-20 victory over Jacksonville was a satisfying end to an otherwise disappointing season, and a fitting way to close the book on the Titans' tenures of two notable performers, Derrick Henry and Rayn Tannehill – and ultimately their head coach.…
No one could say the Tennessee Titans were mailing it in. Although they had lost three of their last four headed into Sunday's game at Houston, all three defeats were in games that went down to the end of regulation or beyond and the victory was a come-from-behind affair in the closing minutes at Miami. The 26-3 loss, which dropped them to 5-11 and left them four games behind their division foes, looked like something completely different. ... This Sunday's game against the Jacksonville Jaguars at Nissan Stadium will conclude the 2023 season -- and will provide the Titans with one more opportunity to win a division game. Thus far, they are 0-5 against AFC South opponents. Since realignment in 2002, Tennessee never has failed to win at least one division game. ... The effect of mounting defeats and continuing personnel issues showed Monday when coach Mike Vrabel let loose with a bit of profanity during a press conference. He apologized two days later, but his choice of words spoke volumes about the current emotional state of the man in charge. ... The rumor mill continues to spin with speculation that Vrabel and general manager Ran Carthon do not have a strong working relationship. Recent reports suggest that Vrabel, who is under contract beyond this season, could force his way out and try to find a more comfortable opportunity for the future. Vrabel was asked about the reports this week and expressed his desire to keep the job he has had for nearly six years now. ... Despite the offense's deficiencies, particularly on the line, running back Derrick Henry has topped 1,000 rushing yards for the fifth time in six years, and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins topped 1,000 receiving yards in his first year with the team. Both achievements are notable in their ways. ... There is no question that Will Levis is Tennessee's quarterback of the future. For the second time in recent weeks, though, his status for the next game is in doubt because of an injury. Once again, there is no indication that coaches want to see what second-year quarterback Malik Willis can do or to showcase the 2022 third-round pick for a potential offseason trade.…

The Tennessee Titans' latest defeat, 19-16 in overtime against the Houston Texans, was surprisingly similar to their previous one, two weeks earlier against the Indianapolis Colts. ... This loss officially eliminated them from playoff contention and left them with a 5-9 record, which guarantees a second straight losing season. ... For the second time this season, the Titans' starting quarterback sustained a high ankle sprain. The first time it happened, rookie Will Levis stepped in for Ryan Tannehill and ultimately supplanted Tannehill as the full-time starter. Now, Levis is hurt, and Tannehill is poised to step in and play in place of Levis. ... Once again, second-year quarterback Malik Willis appears to have merited little if any consideration as the starter. That makes it seem increasingly that the end of Willis' time in Tennessee is rapidly approaching. ... Levis was injured when he was sacked for the seventh time by the Texans' defense, a play that capped another forgettable performance for the offensive line. ... Likewise, that line did nothing to help running back Derrick Henry, who endured roughly his worst day as a pro. The question as Henry nears the end of his current contract is whether age finally caught up with him or if he simply has been victimized by sub-par blocking during his eighth NFL season. ... Henry and Tannehill are among the Titans' most prominent players who are set to become free agents this offseason. But it is a member of the defense who looks like one player franchise officials should do all they can to re-sign. ... The Seattle Seahawks come to town Sunday fresh off a big, come-from-behind victory on Monday night, just as the Titans did a week earlier. Is there any reason that Tennessee can do to Seattle as Houston did to Tennessee?…

The Tennessee Titans won their first road game of the season and dealt the Miami Dolphins their first home defeat 28-27 on Monday. Tennessee overcame a pair of late miscues with two touchdowns and a two-point conversion in the final 2:46, which made the first NFL team since 2016 to win when trailing by 14 with three minutes to play, and the first ever to do so in regulation. ... Now at 5-8, the Titans are still last in the AFC South and have less than a one percent chance to make the playoffs, but the play of the defense (minus Jeffery Simmons) against the league's highest-scoring team and the willingness to battle to the end look like positive signs for what is to come in the remainder of this season and beyond. ... The victory came a day after the world learned that former Titans tight end Frank Wycheck had died at his home in Chattanooga. Wycheck was 52 years old when he passed. During his time with the Titans, though, he was an invaluable part of the offense and an important voice in the locker room and the community. ... Tennessee will face the Houston Texans twice in the final four weeks, including Sunday in Nashville. Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins had several big games against the Titans as a member of the Texans. Recent events suggest it is likely that he has another big game, this time as a member of the Titans against the Texans.…
The Tennessee Titans fell to 4-8 on Sunday when they lost 31-28 in overtime to the Indianapolis Colts. The game included several special teams blunders, injuries to some of Tennessee's most important players, and an uncommon sideline interaction between a couple of players. All in all, it was an unusual affair that resulted in an all-too-common outcome for the Titans. ... The fallout of this latest loss began when special teams coordinator Craig Aukerman was fired on Monday. Aukerman had directed the Titans' special teams since the start of the 2018 season but paid the price for a disastrous performance. Mike Vrabel said he was the one who fired Aukerman. Still, there is ample evidence to suggest the order to do so came from much higher up. ... Third-year linebacker Monty Rice, a third-round pick in 2021, was released on Tuesday and subsequently claimed by the New Orleans Saints. His departure marks the latest failure of recent early selections. ... The Titans signed rookie punter Ty Zentner to replace Ryan Stonehouse, who sustained a season-ending injury as part of the special teams debacle against the Colts. ... Veteran wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins did not hide his disappointment when rookie quarterback Will Levis threw a pass out of bounds and well out of Hopkins' reach. The two then had an animated sideline discussion that showed the interesting dynamic that exists between the two. ... Cornerback Kristian Fulton sustained a familiar injury late in the loss to the Colts, and his status for Monday's game at Miami is in doubt. Even though Fulton has not always played his best this season, the timing of his latest ailment could not be worse given the challenges the Dolphins' offense presents. To make matters worse, Jeffery Simmons will be out with an injury of his own, which will hinder the ability of the pass rush to help out the secondary.…

Officially, the Tennessee Titans are 4-1 in home games this season, but with their 17-10 victory over the Carolina Panthers on Sunday, they improved to 4-0 in games played at Nissan Stadium (they were the "home" team in their loss to Baltimore in London). Only three other teams have not lost in their own stadiums this year, and they are all good ones. ... Rookie quarterback Will Levis did not have his best game against the Panthers, but it wasn't his worst either. He had one really good half. What he did not have was a turnover. On balance, the decision to play him instead of veteran Ryan Tannehill continues to look wise. ... Running backs were not a hot commodity during last year's free-agent signing period. There will be plenty of them available in 2024, including Derrick Henry, and that scenario is one reason -- among several -- to think that Henry and the Titans could agree on another contract that will keep him around past this season, which is the final one on his current deal. ... The first time the Titans played the Indianapolis Colts this season, quarterback Garnder Minshew replaced an injured Anthony Richardson and led a Colts offense that generated more than 400 total yards, including nearly half that total with the running game. This time, Tennessee players and coaches have the opportunity to prepare for Minshew and the challenges he presents.…

Sunday's loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars was the latest disappointing performance by the Tennessee Titans. The offensive line and defensive backfield continued to struggle, and the Titans had to resort to trick plays to score touchdowns. ... With three straight losses and 14 in the last 17 games, dating back to last season, coach Mike Vrabel has started to face questions about his job security. He does have a record of success with the Titans, a seemingly solid relationship with controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk and a plan for the future. With seven games remaining, though, there are plenty of opportunities to eat away at all of that equity. ... With the loss to Jacksonville, there is now almost zero chance for Tennessee to make the playoffs. That will test the resolve of the players and the creativity of the coaching staff as everyone works to stay motivated. ... Motivation won't be a problem for rookie quarterback Will Levis, who fell out of the first round in April's draft. In this one, he will face another rookie quarterback, Bryce Young, the player the Panthers deemed was the best available when they selected him first overall.…
The Tennessee Titans' offensive line has been a liability all season. It got even worse Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers when an ankle injury kept right guard Daniel Brunskill out of action and a concussion sidelined left tackle Andre Dillard early in the contest. The makeshift unit did not protect quarterback Will Levis or open holes for running back Derrick Henry well enough for the offense to do much of anything. ... Levis, making his third start, had by far his worst performance to date but was hardly to blame given the pressure he faced throughout the day. It is tough to imagine the rookie signal caller will do much better if his protection does not improve. ... Speaking of Henry, the veteran running back actually leads the AFC and is second in the NFL in rushing yards despite the shortcomings of those whose job it is to open holes for him. ... Even with the issues on offense, the Titans still have the same touchdown ratio and point differential as a team with a 6-3 record, which shows that the defense does enough almost every week to give the team a chance at victory. ... The only team in the AFC with a worse record than Tennessee is the New England Patriots, and there is talk that if that team fires coach Bill Belichick, Tennessee's Mike Vrabel would be the first choice of owner Robert Kraft to take over there.…
After two starts in place of injured Ryan Tannehill, rookie Will Levis was named the Tennessee Titans' starting quarterback for the remainder of the season. In a victory over Atlanta and a loss to Pittsburgh, the second-round draft pick from Kentucky has shown a strong arm and a willingness to stand in the pocket to get the ball deep down the field. It is a skill set that meshes well with the current offensive plan, and one that the team now (apparently) plans to use for years to come. ... Tannehill, who is in the final year of his contract, is now effectively done as Tennessee's quarterback. His tenure currently consists of exactly the same number of games played (63) and starts (61) for the Titans as the man he replaced, Marcus Mariota. Statistically speaking, the difference between the two was not as pronounced as most would expect. The biggest difference was in their records. ... Levis will have to work behind an offensive line that has not consistently protected either quarterback this season. And with tackles Nicholas Petit-Frere and Chris Hubbard and right guard Daniel Brunskill dealing with injuries, it could be a backup-heavy unit that plays Sunday against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. One of those backups is Dillon Radunz, a second-round pick in 2021 who could fill in almost anywhere but never has played in a way that suggests coaches have confidence in him. ... The game against the Buccaneers is on the road, and the Titans have yet to win a game outside of Nissan Stadium this season. Is there any reason to expect this week will be different?…

Rookie Will Levis started at quarterback in place of the injured Ryan Tannehill on Sunday and led the Tennessee Titans to a 28-23 victory over the Atlanta Falcons with four touchdown passes, including three to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins ... Levis was particularly effective with deep throws, as evidenced by the fact that three of Tennessee's touchdowns came on plays of more than 30 yards. That ability to throw – and complete – the deep ball exploited the risks defenses take when they load up to stop running back Derrick Henry, which could mean that the Titans will want to bring back Henry next season. ... With a short week to prepare for Thursday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Levis is all but guaranteed to start once again this week. His performance against the Falcons, however, also led coach Mike Vrabel to alter his earlier stance that Tannehill unequivocally would return as the starter once he is healthy. ... What is certain is that second-year quarterback Malik Willis looks to have little future with Tennessee. It didn't help that his first snap against the Falcons resulted in a turnover (a lost fumble). ... Tannehill was a name mentioned prominently ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline, particularly after Levis' debut. But the Titans did not deal their veteran quarterback or anyone else in the final days and hours when such moves were allowed. It was an unexpected approach after they sent safety Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles a week earlier and altered the perception of what franchise officials wanted to accomplish by moving on from Byard, one of the leaders of the defense.…
Coming out of the open date in their schedule, the Tennessee Titans traded safety Kevin Byard to the Philadelphia Eagles in exchange for one veteran safety, Terrell Edmunds, and two picks in the 2024 NFL Draft (one each in the fifth and sixth rounds). A third-round selection in the 2016 draft, Byard never missed a game with Tennessee, earned two Pro Bowl invitations and was a two-time first-team All-Pro. ... Coach Mike Vrabel says the Byard deal is not related to the Titans' record (2-4), but common sense suggests it is the first move for a franchise that will be a "seller" ahead of the Oct. 31 trade deadline. Speculation already is rampant regarding possible destinations for quarterback Ryan Tannehill, running back Derrick Henry and wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins. But they are not the only ones who could be moved. ... Not long ago, it seemed unthinkable that the Titans would want to be without Byard, but first-year general manager Ran Carthon has seemingly had a different view of a player who has been a reliable leader and performer on and off the field. So, it's possible that this separation ultimately was inevitable. ... The subject of who else will be traded is not the only uncertainty around the Titans at the moment. With Tannehill still slowed by an ankle injury, questions about who will lead the offense Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons are plentiful. An NFL.com report says that rookie Will Levis will start in place of Tannehill, but Vrabel maintains that Malik Willis also will play, and it is possible the two could alternate on a snap-by-snap basis. ... Is Levis' insertion into the starting role a temporary situation or does it signal the end of Tannehill's time as Tennessee's quarterback?…
At 2-4, the Tennessee Titans are last in the AFC South, and only two teams in the conference have a worse record. With the Oct. 31 NFL trade deadline approaching, many will look at Tennessee as a team likely to unload players. Among those in the final year of their contracts who would be appealing to current playoff contenders are running back Derrick Henry, quarterback Ryan Tannehill and defensive lineman Denico Autry. ... Part of the current predicament is a product of back-to-back drafts (2020 and 2021) that produced little in the way a regular or meaningful contributors at a time when players selected in those years should be in their primes. ... Speaking of Tannehill, an ankle injury forced him to finish Sunday's game on the sideline and created uncertainty about his availability for the next contest, Oct. 29 against Atlanta. Coach Mike Vrabel said that Tannehill will play if he's healthy. But if he is not, that means either Malik Willis or Will Levis will get the call, and Vrabel was not willing to say which way he would go in that case. ... There were a couple of in-game lineup changes against the Ravens based solely on performance. One starter got back on the field and finished the contest. The other did not, which likely means he has lost his starting spot for good. ... The Philadelphia Eagles, who have had much more success than the Titans this season, have taken a page from Tennessee's 2021 personnel playbook. In other words, Philadelphia replicated a move that Tennessee made two years earlier. Chances are, it can't turn out worse for the Eagles than it did for the Titans.…
A big reason the Tennessee Titans have a losing record five weeks into the 2023 NFL season is that they have had trouble scoring touchdowns, particularly when they get close to the goal line. The Titans rank 26th in points scored and are tied for 29th in red zone percentage. Personnel issues, no doubt, are part of the problem, but this is not the first time their offensive coordinator has directed an attack that has performed sub-standard in this regard. ... Fourth-year cornerback Kristian Fulton continues to look like anything but the player he was during his first three seasons. Coach Mike Vrabel admitted he even thought about benching Fulton in Sunday's loss at Indianapolis. If things don't get better -- and soon -- it almost certainly will mean a change. ... Fulton is not the only one struggling. According to the panel, others in need of a wake-up call include the face of the offense, a stalwart on defense and a second-year player who has not taken the expected step forward. ... The Titans will wait until late in the week before they travel to London and won't have a lot of time to acclimate themselves to their surroundings and the time change. Their opponent, the Baltimore Ravens, took a decidedly different approach to this contest. What, if anything, will it all mean when the teams meet on the field Sunday?…

The Tennessee Titans are 0-2 on the road and 2-0 at home following last Sunday's 27-3 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals. Their latest performance was a complete reversal of the one that preceded it, right down to the fact that they reversed the score (they lost 27-3 at Cleveland in Week 3). So, what do we know about the Titans after four games? ... Nicholas Petit-Frere was one of multiple NFL players whose gambling-related suspension was reduced to four games last week from the original six. As a result, last season's starter at right tackle is back on the practice field and is eligible to play this Sunday at Indianapolis. It is possible, though, that if he is back in the lineup, it will be at a different spot given how well Chris Hubbard, who wasn't signed until after the start of training camp, has played in his place. ... Another player who might be back in action this week is second-year wide receiver Kyle Philips, who spent the first four weeks on injured reserve. Philips' addition to the attack was highly anticipated a year ago, but injuries have kept him out of action for the majority of his NFL career to date. ... Indianapolis' rookie quarterback Anthony Richardson presents a unique challenge for Tennessee's defense this week. Richardson's ability to run and questions about his proficiency as a passer will dictate a specific, less aggressive approach from Jeffery Simmons, Denico Autry and the rest of the defensive front. But in this case, less from the pass rush ultimately could mean more.…

In their third game of the 2023 season, the Tennessee Titans looked like the same team that lost at New Orleans in Week 1 and not the one that defeated the Los Angeles Chargers. Specifically, the offensive line struggled to create opportunities to run or throw the ball, and the pass defense allowed too many big plays at too many key moments. ... Left guard Peter Skoronski is likely to miss at least one more game due to an appendectomy and no personnel changes appear imminent along the offensive line, and it is not if there are many attractive options. ... Left tackle Andre Dilliard has struggled as much as anyone, particularly in pass protection. It is a disappointing start for a player who was such a high priority in free agency despite a limited history of actual production in the NFL. ... Last year's right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere has three games remaining on his suspension. HIs eventual return could be the impetus for change, if it is to happen. ... Two former Titans tackles are available as free agents but neither is a legitimate possibility for an addition. ... Cornerback Kristian Fulton has struggled mightily on pass defense as opposing quarterbacks have completed seven of eight passes thrown at him, which is unexpected given his play in previous seasons. Fulton also has missed a game with a hamstring injury, which is all too familiar given the injuries he has experienced in recent seasons. ... At 1-2, the Titans will host the Cincinnati Bengals (1-2) on Sunday. Cincinnati is 3-0 against Tennessee in the five-plus seasons that Mike Vrabel has been the Titans' head coach. The Bengals also have a roster that should be able to exploit the obvious weaknesses in Tennessee's play to this point.…

Ryan Tannehill looked more like the Ryan Tannehill that Tennessee Titans have come to expect when he completed 20 of 24 passes and did not commit a turnover in Sunday's 27-24 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Chargers. It was a much-needed bounce back after a disastrous outing the previous week, and it should ease the fears of Titans fans everywhere. ... Tannehill was sacked five times in the contest, but an offensive line that featured Dillon Radunz at left guard held up when it mattered, such as the 70-yard pass from Tannehill to Tretylon Burks in the second quarter, a play that kickstarted Tennessee's offense. The line also helped Derrick Henry rush for 80 yards on 25 carries. ... Speaking of Henry, the balance between his workload and that of rookie Tyjae Spears was much more in line with what most expect from this offense, but the way new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly used his two backs kept the Chargers guessing and will make it harder for future opponents to know what is coming. ... The line will be put to the test again this week at Cleveland. The Browns defense features an elite pass rusher in Myles Garrett and is led by former Titans assistant Jim Schwartz, who knows how Tennessee's staff thinks. ... Sunday's game, however, won't be a showdown between Henry and Cleveland's Nick Chubb, the NFL's top two rushers since the start of the 2018 season.…
For the third straight year and the fourth time in six seasons under coach Mike Vrabel, the Tennessee Titans have started 0-1. This time, they fell 16-15 to the New Orleans Saints in a game that featured some dominant play by the defense, a sparkling debut by kicker Nick Folk and a disastrous outing by quarterback Ryan Tannehill, who threw three interceptions, missed some wide open receivers, was sacked three times and finished with a career-low 28.8 passer rating. ... Among the promising signs were the performance of the defense, which allowed some big plays but just one touchdown, and special teams that accounted for all of the points and one takeaway. It also is noteworthy that under coach Mike Vrabel, the Titans have a history of quickly fixing early-season flaws. ... Tannehill's issues included an obvious desire to force the ball to new wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins, a shortage of time to stand tall in the pocket and atypical struggles with accuracy. ... Hopkins had the ball thrown his way a lot (13 times) but ultimately did not make much of those opportunities (seven catches, 65 yards). To make matters worse, he came out of the game injured. ... Many fans want to make sure the Titans don't overwork running back Derrick Henry. But after Henry carried just 15 times for 63 yards against the Saints, many wondered why he didn't get the ball more, particularly late in the game. ... It was a promising performance for first-year general manager Ran Carthon, based on the performance of several newcomers, including kicker Nick Folk, outside linebacker Arden Key and first-round draft pick Peter Skoronski. ... Up next is a game at home against the Los Angeles Chargers, a team that looks well-equipped to take advantage of issues with injuries to the Titans' secondary.…

As preparations for Sunday's opener against the New Orleans Saints got underway in earnest, coach Mike Vrabel revealed who had been named team captains, based on a vote of the players. Seven (three on offense, three on defense and one on special teams) were chosen, and one of the seven is likely to be a surprise to most fans. ... One thing Vrabel would not disclose is whether Malik Willis or rookie Will Levis will be the second-string quarterback this week. What is the point of keeping quiet, and what is the most likely decision for this contest? ... New Orleans' secondary coach is someone Titans fans know well, former Tennessee safety Marcus Robertson, and his unit will match up against a Titans' passing attack that is largely a mystery at the conclusion of the offseason and preseason. ... Overall, the Saints had one of the best and most productive defenses in the NFL last season. They have proven playmakers at every level, and they will pose a particular challenge for the Titans' revamped offensive line. ... Quarterback Derek Carr represents the most significant change to the New Orleans offense. In his years with the Oakland/Las Vegas Raiders, Carr had his share of success against Tennessee. With the Saints, he has his share of weapons, which won't make him any easier to deal with. ... The episode concludes with predictions: for the outcome of the game: for the Titans' 2023 record and for how the AFC South will stack up at the end of the regular season.…
There were plenty of notable decisions the Tennessee Titans made when they cut their roster to 53 players. Among them: all three quarterbacks (Ryan Tannehill, Malik Willis and rookie Will Levis) made it; two rookies who grew up in or around Nashville (wide receiver Colton Dowell and safety Matthew Jackson) made it: and two recent draft picks (wide receiver Racey McMath and linebacker Chance Campbell) did not. ... The first post-cut practice included the rapid return from injury by wide receiver Treylon Burks. Perhaps even more surprising was offensive lineman Dillon Radunz's removal from the Physically Unable to Perform list. Burks' return provides some much-needed certainty for the offense as it prepares for the opener at New Orleans. What Radunz can add -- or will be asked to add -- is not nearly as clear. ... The Titans changed kickers again when they traded a 2025 seventh-round pick to New England for 38-year-old veteran Nick Folk, who becomes the latest long-in-the-tooth kicker to get the job with Tennessee. Cade York, a 2022 draft pick by Cleveland, was added to the practice squad as either insurance against age catching up to Folk or as the long-term solution at the position -- or both. ... The decision to keep three quarterbacks was not a given at the start of the preseason. Of the three, Willis likely helped himself the most in the exhibition games. But did he do enough to be the No. 2 guy when the regular season starts? ... Speaking of the quarterbacks, what was the point of Tannehill handing off three times before he went to the bench in the preseason finale against New England? ... If there is one noticeable change with general manager Ran Carthon now in charge, it is an apparent willingness to roll the dice with players who did not face elite competition in college. ... If there are areas of concern, they appear to be the offensive line and the last line of defense, aka the safeties, or at least the depth players at that spot.…

The Titans' final week of the preseason included New England's decision to cancel joint workouts between the teams prior to their game on Aug. 25, the news that cornerback Caleb Farley's father was killed in an explosion that destroyed Farley's North Carolina home, and the news that former Tennessee wide receiver decided to end his NFL career at 28 years old and with one year remaining on his contract with the New York Jets. ... Davis was not as good a player as the Titans hoped when they selected him fifth overall in the 2017 draft, but he played one of the best games of his career against them in 2021, his first season with New York. ... The battle between young kickers Caleb Shudak and Trey Wolff ended when both were released and veteran Michael Badgely was signed. Badgley had a brief and disastrous stint with Tennessee early in 2021, and coach Mike Vrabel made it clear that Badgley might not last long this time either. ... A minor injury kept rookie quarterback Will Levis out of the preseason game at Minnesota. That allowed Malik Willis to play the whole contest and potentially stake his claim as Ryan Tannehill's backup. The Titans won that game, but Willis did not necessarily help his cause. ... Speaking of the backup quarterback battle, the San Francisco 49ers' decision to make Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall pick in 2021, their No. 3 (at best) opens the door for some interesting possibilities for the Titans, whose general manager (Ran Carthon) was in San Francisco when Lance was drafted. ... Kyle Philips became the second Titans wide receiver in as many weeks to sustain a knee injury. His issue followed the one for Treylon Burks. Each is expected to miss a matter of weeks and uncertainty about their availability for the start of the regular season will make final roster decisions much more difficult.…
Second-year wide receiver Treylon Burks sustained a sprained lateral collateral knee ligament during the first day of joint workouts with the Minnesota Vikings. Burks was injured without contact, which – after an injury-filled rookie season – raises questions about his durability. The fact that it was not a season-ending injury, however, means he will have the opportunity to live up to the expectations that many have for the 2022 first-round pick who – up to this point – had a highly productive offseason. ... The preseason opener against the Chicago Bears, a 23-17 loss, was an opportunity for everyone to evaluate the Titans' young quarterbacks, Malik Willis and Will Levis. Willis showed signs of maturity and continued development in his second preseason, as evidenced by how quickly he got rid of the ball and by how often he was willing to hang in the pocket. Levis showcased the arm strength that makes him such an appealing prospect but also (at times) looked like the rookie that he is. ... The offensive line, which has been the biggest question mark of the Titans' offseason, opened with an exclamation point, a long drive that prompted coaches to keep the starters on the bench for the remainder of the contest. The reserves did not live up to the standard that the starters set, however, and showed that the overall construction of that unit remains very much a work in progress. ... Rookie running back Tyjae Spears did nothing to diminish optimism about what he might be able to contribute to the offense this season and even chipped in as a return man.…
The first preseason game means the release of the first depth chart of the season. While "unofficial," it is nonetheless interesting in what it reveals about some players. The Titans' first depth chart shows that some have new positions, others have unexpected competition and there are those who have a long way to go to make the regular-season roster. ... Coach Mike Vrabel decided to use the game against the Bears as an opportunity to step back and allow defensive line coach Terrell Williams to lead the team. Williams was given the title of "assistant head coach – defense" earlier in the offseason, and this will allow him to garner more attention around the league and – perhaps – emerge as a head coach candidate for other franchises next offseason. ... The offensive line will be among the most scrutinized units throughout the preseason, and the starters are likely to play more than usual in this game, which will allow coaches and franchise officials an extended opportunity to evaluate them. Additionally, the hope is that one or both of the unproven kickers get a chance to perform under pressure. Plus, the pressure is on a group of young players who have been around for a year or more but have not established themselves as full-time regular-season performers. ... Jamarco Jones' bid to replace Nicholas Petit-Frere at right tackle for the first six games of the regular season ended when he was released more than a week before the preseason opener. Jones, signed as a free agent in 2022, was let go after he fought with Jeffery Simmons and angered many members of the defense with a questionable block on consecutive days.…
At this point in training camp, all coaches and fans have to go on when it comes to player evaluation is performance in practices. By all accounts, rookie quarterback Will Levis performed well on Monday. The next day, he got reps with the second-team offense for the first time. Maybe it was a coincidence (Denard Walker) thinks so, perhaps it was not (that's John Glennon's belief). What is certain is that one of them will be in position to lead the offense if Ryan Tannehill is injured this season, as he was in 2022. ... There are other position battles that are developing too. One is at right tackle, where the recent addition of veteran Chris Hubbard increased the number of candidates by one. ... Inside linebackers Monty Rice and Jack Gibbens have different strengths but it seems one of them will be a starter alongside Azeez Al-Shaair. ... The Titans don't want to pay big money for a kicker which is why they have two youngsters, Caleb Shudak and Trey Wolff, in camp. If history is any indication, performance in preseason games will go a long way toward determining who gets the job. ... Despite efforts to build depth through the draft, the Titans have a decided lack of experience and certainty behind starting safeties Kevin Byard and Amani Hooker. If someone does not emerge as a reliable performer (or performers) in the coming days and weeks, the front office likely will have to look for a free agent or another team's castoff.…
Shortly after he signed with the Tennessee Titans, wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins talked about factors that influenced his decision, including his relationships with coach Mike Vrabel and running back Derrick Henry. Curiously, though, he also cited the team's performance in the final two games of 2022, defeats that extended Tennessee's losing streak to seven games and ended its reign as AFC South champion. ... The Titans were able to make the deal for Hopkins -- in part -- because safety Kevin Byard was willing to restructure his contract. That selfless move ended a contentious offseason between the leader of the defense and the new front office. It also undoubtedly was dreamed up by one of the more underappreciated members of the front office. ... The recent decision by the NFL to suspend right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere has created some training camp intrigue. To date, the team has resisted the urge to sign a veteran fill-in, namely George Fant. The current roster includes one candidate (likely the leading candidate) who was a forgotten man a year ago. ... Finally, Vrabel can't seem to say enough good things about the work second-year quarterback Malik Willis put in (and the attitude he displayed) during the offseason. What happens in the preseason games, though, is likely to speak volumes about what coaches want to do about who backs up starter Ryan Tannehill during the regular season.…
All of the what-ifs turned into what is when free-agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins said he intended to sign with the Tennessee Titans. Coach Mike Vrabel confirmed the move, which added a much-needed and proven playmaker to an offense that desperately needed one. Nearly every other skill position player should benefit from the presence of the eight-time Pro Bowler, who at 31 years old – and based on recent social media posts – remains highly motivated as he joins his third NFL franchise. It also validated the approach of first-year general manager Ran Carthon, who has preached patience throughout the offseason. ... Hopkins might not be the last veteran the Titans add this offseason. Tackle George Fant, a seventh-year veteran with 60 career starts (more than any current member of the offensive line), is scheduled to work out for franchise officials days before the start of training camp. He could provide an immediate replacement for right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere, who is suspended for the first six games, and an established voice of experience for a unit that will be dramatically different from a season ago. ... The typically reserved Derrick Henry was among the most outspoken as NFL players reacted to the failure of three high-profile running backs to secure long-term extensions this summer. Either the two-time rushing champion felt a real need to defense the honor of his position or feared for what he might face next offseason when he is scheduled to be a free agent and will be in search of a new contract – or both.…

It is mid-July, which means the report dates for Tennessee Titans rookies (July 22) and veterans (July 25), as well as the first practice (July 26), is just weeks away. Even the first preseason game (Aug. 12 at Chicago) will occur in a month. ... Franchise officials also have revealed when they will reveal the throwback uniforms that will be worn for one -- maybe two games -- during the 2024 NFL season. The perceived excitement over this occurrence is a far cry from 1998, when franchise founder Bud Adams gave into pressure from Nashville sports fans and decided to abandon the franchise's traditional nickname, colors and uniforms. The Oilers became the Titans in 1999. ... Speaking of Mr. Adams, he is a Pro Football Hall of Fame semifinalist in the coach/contributor category, as is former Oilers/Titans scout C.O. Brocato. Former Oilers wide receiver/return man Billy "White Shoes" Johnson is a semifinalist in the senior category. All three face long odds for induction. ... Free agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins still has not settled on his next team, but oddsmakers suddenly see Tennessee as the prohibitive favorite to sign him eventually.…
To Tennessee Titans fans, the Fourth of July is more than just a national holiday. It is also the anniversary of Steve McNair's untimely death in 2009, and many take the time each year to remember the only quarterback to take this franchise to the Super Bowl. ... The NFL announced that right tackle Nicholas Petit-Frere has been suspended for the first six games of the 2023 season due to a violation of the league's gambling policy. Petit-Frere was forthcoming in a public statement about his transgression, but that does not diminish the fact that his absence will be a significant blow to a unit that already faces a lot of uncertainty this season. ... More bad news: running back Hassan Haskins and his girlfriend were arrested after a pair of domestic violence incidents. The issue creates the likelihood that he will be suspended, and even creates the possibility that the Titans could release him. ... There is still no resolution to wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins' search for a new team, but recent reporting suggests Tennessee is not a likely destination. ... Finally, the coaching staff underwent something of an overhaul this offseason with new assistants hired and others reassigned. A look at which ones might have the most significant impact on the team's fortunes and why.…
General manager Ran Carthon and coach Mike Vrabel each answered questions about quarterback Ryan Tannehill this week while at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis. What they said could not be considered an unqualified endorsement, but it does seem more likely than not that Tannehill will remain the man under center for Tennessee. ... With the 11th overall pick in this year's draft, the Titans are in position to make a move (or moves) to get one of this year's top rookie quarterbacks, if they so desire. Given all the more pressing needs for the roster, though, that is probably not the best course of action. ... As a first-year general manager, Carthon is doing what he can to familiarize himself with what his coaches want. And he has given every one of Vrabel's assistants an assignment to help him figure it all out. ... The NFLPA polled its membership about working conditions within their respective franchises, and the Titans ended up with a B- grade, ranked 18th out of the NFL's 32 franchises. The franchise's time in Tennessee shows just how important things like the quality of the locker room, the training room and travel amenities can be in a team's success. ... Tackle Taylor Lewan, wide receiver Robert Woods, inside linebacker Zach Cunningham and kicker Randy Bullock have been released. None of the moves was a complete shocker, and the reasoning behind them is obvious to all.…
The Tennessee Titans have been named as potential destinations for veteran quarterbacks Derek Carr, who has been released by the Las Vegas Raiders, and Aaron Rodgers, who might ask the Green Bay Packers to trade him. Of course, Tennessee still has Ryan Tannehill, their starter for three-plus seasons, under contract for 2023 and franchise officials have not said whether they plan to stick with him. Hosts David Boclair, John Glennon and Denard Walker weigh the merits of all three and how each one would impact other aspects of the roster construction. ... One position group that could be dramatically different from last season is edge rusher, where Harold Landry is on the mend from reconstructive knee surgery, Bud Dupree is a potential cap cut and Denico Autry is a much more viable option than most realized. A look at how that position group might shape up this season. ... The free agent signing period is still almost a month away, but the hosts serve up names they think could be – or should be – on the Titans' wish list.…

The Kansas City Chiefs won Super Bowl LVII on Sunday when they defeated the Philadelphia Eagles. That makes two championships in four years for Patrick Mahomes and the rest, and during that span arguably no team has matched up better with them than the Tennessee Titans have. Does that mean Tennessee is closer to a championship than it appeared at the end of the 2022 regular season? ... Speaking of winning Super Bowls, the Titans are one of 12 NFL teams that never have done it. That group includes one that nearly did it a year ago (the Cincinnati Bengals) and several others that feature high-profile and highly productive young quarterbacks. So, is there one that looks capable of a breakthrough next season? Is it the Titans? If not, where do they stand on that list? ... Coach Mike Vrabel announced a host of changes to the coaching staff last week. Among them, Tim Kelly was promoted to offensive coordinator and Jason Houghtaling made a big jump from offensive line assistant to offensive line coach. Two others were demoted, Pat O'Hara from quarterbacks coach to pass game analyst and Luke Steckel from tight ends coach to run game analyst. Tony Dews was moved from running backs to tight ends, and a few others were added from the outside, including quarterbacks coach/pass game coordinator Charles London. What do these moves say about what the Titans want to do on offense from a personnel and scheme standpoint next season? ... Finally, Tennessee's former offensive coordinator, Todd Downing, has been hired by the New York Jets, a team reportedly interested in Ryan Tannehill. Does their familiarity with one another make the Jets a likely landing spot for Tannehill, if he is released or the Titans are willing to trade him?…

The Tennessee Titans were featured prominently in 'Bullies of Baltimore,' the latest ESPN 30 for 30 film, because it was Eddie George, Steve McNair and the rest who posed the biggest challenge to the eventual Super Bowl XXXV champions. Included was an allegation from then-Ravens quarterback Trent Dilfer that the Titans stole his playbook during the teams' regular-season encounter in Nashville and used it to great advantage – although not well enough to win – in the playoff game. Denard Walker has vivid memories of that game and the atmosphere that surrounded it and shares his thoughts on what was said. ... The three hosts have similar feelings about which time, the Philadelphia Eagles or Kansas City Chiefs, will win Super Bowl LVII, but they have different feelings about how competitive a contest it will be. ... Finally, before the 2023 NFL Draft happens, Titans executives will have to revisit the 2019 draft and decide whether they want to – and/or can afford to – two keep pending free agents, guard Nate Davis and linebacker David Long. Two of the biggest personnel moves the Tennessee Titans made in 2022 remain topics of discussion after the Philadelphia Eagles, with wide receiver A.J. Brown and punter Brett Kern, reach the Super Bowl. The Titans traded Brown to Philadelphia in a draft-day deal that continues to haunt the franchise given his personal success and Tennessee's regression in the passing game this season. The argument even can be made that Brown has a lot to do with why Philadelphia is still playing. Kern lost his job to undrafted rookie Ryan Stonehouse. That move worked out for both sides as Stonehouse set an NFL record for Tennessee and Kern, after spending most of the season out of action, gets a chance to cap his career with a championship. ... Speaking of the Super Bowl, the Titans faced both teams -- Philadelphia and Kansas City -- during the regular season. Tennessee lost both but in decidedly different manners. ... Ran Carthon will have to cut players to get under the salary cap and does not have a ton of draft capital. His first offseason as Titans general manager, therefore, will be drastically different than Jon Robinson's first (2016), which was a turning point for the franchise. ... Carthon also has gone on the record with what he likes in a quarterback and one of the current Titans fits the bill. But it is possible that he could call on connections with his former team, the San Francisco 49ers, at that position along with a few others.…
The word "collaboration" was used often during Ran Carthon's introductory press conference as Tennessee Titans general manager. Whether it was in the way he talked about working with coach Mike Vrabel, his unscheduled visit with the local media ahead of that event or several other things, there was nothing to suggest that the use of that word is just lip service. Carthon gave the impression that his experience, his ego and his personal expectations are all secondary to the success of the team. ... Tight ends coach Luke Steckel will interview with the Los Angeles Chargers in that team's search for an offensive coordinator. Having been with Tennessee for a decade and a position coach for two years, the son of former Titans offensive coordinator Les Steckel has not been considered a factor in the search for Todd Downing's replacement. Should people have been looking at this guy, and is Mike Vrabel doing exactly that? ... The Titans' 2022 draft class remains a work in progress with the likes of Malik Willis (third round), Treylon Burks (first round) and Chance Campbell (sixth round) having had little or no opportunity to show what they can do. But the contributions of Roger McCreary (second round), Nicholas Petit-Frere (third round) and Chig Okonkwo (fourth round) along with those of undrafted players such as record-setting punter Ryan Stonehouse, cornerback Tre Avery and linebacker Jack Gibbens made Tennessee's rookie class one of the best this season, based on an ESPN analysis that used metrics from two advanced statistics sites. ... Finally, the hosts each pick a statistic that best sums up the Titans' 2022 season.…
The Tennessee Titans have selected Ran Carthon to be their next general manager. The 41-year-old has worked his way up the personnel ranks with three different franchises. He has the experience of an NFL player courtesy of a brief career as a running back. He has an NFL pedigree as the son of former New York Giants fullback Maurice Carthon. He has a history of successful team-building, particularly with the 49ers and their general manager Pro Football Hall of Famers John Lynch. And Carthon has a reputation as someone who gets along with everyone, which dates back to his college days at the University of Florida when teammates dubbed him "The Mayor" because it seemed he knew everyone in Gainesville, Fla. Finally, he removes the Titans, founded in 1960 as the Houston Oilers, from the small list of NFL franchises that never have had a minority as head coach or general manager. With Carthon on board, attention turns to the search for a new offensive coordinator, which also includes candidates from outside the organization.…
The end came suddenly. A fumble return by the Jacksonville Jaguars provided the decisive points in the Tennessee Titans' 20-16 defeat. In a way, that play and that game were perfect microcosms of the challenges the Titans faced – and ultimately couldn't overcome this season. ... Four members of the coaching staff have been relieved of their duties. Because of injuries and other factors, those four had some of the hardest jobs of anyone on the staff. When all was said and done, though, that did not matter and they are gone. ... One of the fired coaches was offensive coordinator Todd Downing, and there is a good chance that his replacement already is on the staff. One question that must be answered, though, is how quarterback Malik Willis fits into the picture and whether the new coordinator must be able to develop Willis, build an offense around him or if the third-round pick out of Liberty won't be part of the equation at all. ... In his season-ending press conference, coach Mike Vrabel called out several players, most notably cornerback Kristian Fulton and linebacker David Long for consistent injury issues. It was any atypical moment for Vrabel, and probably an impactful one. ... One thing certain about the offseason is that the Titans currently have the No. 11 pick in the draft. When the Titans lost 36-22 to the Jaguars on Dec. 11, they knew that even if the worst happened, they still would have a chance to win the division in the final week of the regular season. Well, the worst happened. So, Tennessee (7-9) faces Jacksonville (8-8) on Saturday, and the winner will finish first in the AFC South. ... The Titans come into the game having lost six in a row but with a little extra rest because they played on Thursday in Week 17. The Jaguars come into the game with four straight wins and five in their last six games, including two in a row by comfortable margins. ... Josh Dobbs will be Tennessee's starting quarterback for the second straight week. It will be the second start of his six-year career. Dobbs injected some life into the offense against the Dallas Cowboys, but can Tennessee put up enough points with him in charge. ... Rookie Malik Willis will be Dobbs' backup, but coach Mike Vrabel suggested that he might be involved in the gameplan to some degree. ... Not only does Dobbs have a chance to get the Titans to the playoffs for the fourth straight year, he has a chance to add some drama to their long-term situation at quarterback if he plays well. ... Vrabel rested veterans Derrick Henry, Jeffery Simmons, Denico Autry and others during the loss to the Cowboys, which should be of a benefit to them. That certainly was the case for Henry in 2019, when he sat out a meaningless Week 16 defeat and delivered a dominant Week 17 performance that got Tennessee t the playoffs. ... If nothing else, a 19-14 loss to the Houston Texans provided clarity. The Tennessee Titans now know that they have to win at Jacksonville in Week 18 in order to finish first in the AFC South and reach the postseason for the fourth straight year. ... That means that Thursday's game against Dallas is meaningful, and Mike Vrabel has said he might rest some players to ensure their availability for the next one. Professionalism and the need to get a win after five straight defeats might dictate otherwise. ... Increasingly, the absence of big plays and consistent contributions from the wide receivers is becoming a problem. It also doesn't help that Willis is operating behind an offensive line without two (maybe three) starters because of injury. ... Then, there is the fact that the one thing the Titans could almost always count on to be a difference between victory and defeat no longer delivers in the same way. ... A 17-14 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers dropped the Tennessee Titans to 7-7, one game ahead of the surging Jacksonville Jaguars. With each passing week, a winner-take-all showdown with the Jaguars in the regular season finale looks like more of a possibility. Will the Titans hold on to their place at the top? ... Next up is the Houston Texans, the team with the NFL's worst record but also a team that has pushed two of the league's elite to the limit in the last two weeks. ... The Tennessee Titans are now 7-7 after a fourth straight loss, 17-14 to the Los Angeles Chargers, and their lead in the AFC South is now one game over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The odds still favor the Titans, but how confident is everyone that the Titans will finish first and make another playoff appearance? ... Not that long ago, the Titans' lead in the AFC South looked insurmountable. That is no longer the case as Tennessee is just two games up on Jacksonville with four to play. ... Mike Vrabel's team has lost three straight for the first time since 2018, and its eight-game home win streak against the Jaguars is gone, but things could be a lot worse. Computer models overwhelmingly predict the Titans will finish first for the third consecutive year. And even if the worst happens between now and Week 18, Tennessee will face a winner-take-all matchup at the end of the season. ... Say this about the Jaguars, though, even though it is unlikely they will unseat the Titans this season, it seems certain will be the leading threat to Tennessee's place at the top in the coming seasons. ... Another unlikely hero emerged for a Titans' opponent in the passing game as injuries to the secondary continue to create problems and limit the defense's ability match up with every weapon available to the other team. ... Where have the turnovers gone? A big part of the Titans' recent struggles can be traced to their inability to create takeaways. That certainly was an issue against Jacksonville. ... Not all of the news is bad. Derrick Henry looked much more like Derrick Henry in recent weeks, and the tight ends, particularly, rookie Chig Okonkwo look more and more like reliable and consistent options in the pass game.…
The timing of the decision to fire general manager Jon Robinson is difficult to ignore. It came two days after A.J. Brown caught eight passes for 119 yards and two touchdowns and led his current team, the Philadelphia Eagles, to a victory over his former one, the Tennessee Titans. ... How much did emotions – particularly embarrassment – figure into controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk's decision to make such an uncommon move? It likely was a factor given that this was not the first personnel decision she has made immediately after a disappointing on-field performance. ... There were reasons for concern regarding Robinson's job performance, but there was also a lot to like. On balance, there is no doubt that his time in charge of Titans personnel decisions was a successful one. The feeling is that he should have had the opportunity to address the issues. ... Take closer look at Brown's performance against the Titans, particularly his two touchdown catches (and one score that didn't count). ... Ryan Cowden, the vice president for player personnel since 2018, has been named interim GM. He has interviewed for similar positions around the league in recent years. So, is this a chance for him to audition to land the role full-time? If so, how much can he really show during the course of the season when a general manager's biggest moves happen during the offseason? Or are Cowden and Monti Ossenfort, another potential in-house candidate, tainted in the eyes and mind of the owner by the fact that they were Robinson confidants? ... Derrick Henry and the run game have no almost nowhere in the last four games. Who is to blame, Henry or the offensive line – or both? ... Finally, the Titans have feasted on teams with losing records this season. After back-to-back defeats, the 4-8 Jacksonville Jaguars come to town for a Week 14 matchup at Nissan Stadium.…

Following last season's playoff defeat, Sunday's loss to the Cincinnati Bengals was all too familiar. The Bengals have now won three straight against the Titans since Joe Burrow became their quarterback, and their defensive front once again got the best of Tennessee's offensive line. ... Running back Derrick Henry typically gets better and more dominant as a season progresses, but as November ends and December begins, he is trending in the other direction this year. He ran for just 38 yards on 17 carries against the Bengals and has averaged fewer than three yards per rush over the last three games. ... Perhaps it's a coincidence, but the pass game has shown signs of life with the emergence of rookie wide receiver Treylon Burks and rookie tight end Chig Okonkwo. Those two and several others – Henry included – have contributed to a recent rise in yards-after-catch numbers. ... A.J. Brown was beloved by Titans fans over the previous three seasons. Since he was traded to Philadelphia in April, though, he has managed to make himself a villain with social media shots at his former team. The Pro Bowl wide receiver will be the central figure Sunday when the Titans (7-4) face the Eagles (10-1) and every day leading up to that contest. Brown is certain to be highly motivated, and he has a history of playing big in the biggest moments. The Titans, no doubt, will be equally interested in keeping him under wraps.…
It has been more than a week since the Tennessee Titans hosted wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins on a free-agent visit. Since then, he has met with one other team and made one big promise. He has not, however, settled on where he will play in 2023. Opinions vary on whether the wait is good news or bad for the Titans. ... Running back Derrick Henry is mentioned prominently in any discussion about Tennessee's offense – and rightfully so. His workload and his production in recent seasons have been invaluable to the team and whatever successes it has had. Now in his late 20s and with seven NFL seasons under his belt, can he expect to have the ball in his hands as often this fall? Or should coaches, led by new offensive coordinator Tim Kelly, be thinking about doing things differently? ... Many prognosticators mention second-year tight end Chig Okonkwo among the NFL's leading "breakout" candidates for 2023. There is no argument from the panel, so everyone offers their best guess about just how big that breakout will look on the stat sheet.…

Free-agent wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins came to Nashville for a visit and went off – without a deal – to talk to the New England Patriots. As of now, these are the only franchises that have had formal talks with the five-time Pro Bowler, who the Arizona Cardinals recently released. In a head-to-head comparison, there are several notable reasons to think the Titans would be a more appealing team to Hopkins than the Patriots. ... One thing in Tennessee's favor is the presence of a proven and established quarterback in Ryan Tannehill. And speaking of Tannehill, he is not exactly jet-setting across the country these days, but he recently earned a license that allows him to pilot small airplanes. Tannehill talked about what he likes about taking to the skies, but it's possible that not everyone with the franchise is happy with the thought of him taking to the skies whenever he wants between now and when his contract with the Titans expires. ... Rookie Will Levis can throw the ball farther on the fly than most NFL quarterbacks, but like many young players at his position it is clear that he needs to learn when – and how – to not put everything he has into every throw. It is an issue that is addressed seemingly daily right now, but one that likely only will be remedied with time. ... Finally, last episode included a look at which spots on the roster are cause for greatest concern. This one ends on an optimistic note: A look at what areas of the roster inspire the most confidence. There is one position group that stands out above the rest, but it is not the only one.…

Coach Mike Vrabel confirmed that the Tennessee Titans will host wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins on a free-agent visit. If reports of other possible destinations are accurate, it is clear that Hopkins, a five-time Pro Bowler, values familiarity. In Vrabel, offensive coordinator Tim Kelly and passing game coordinator Charles London, he has that in Tennessee, courtesy of his seven seasons with the Houston Texans. Earlier in the offseason, franchise officials preached patience in the pursuit of much-needed help at wide receiver. Hopkins could provide the payoff. ... Kevin Byard was asked to take a pay cut this season (he has not done so) and then stayed away to train on his own during organized team activities. The leader of the Titans defense said – when he finally met the media – that those things are not related and that he informed franchise officials months ago of his plan to train on his own for much of the offseason. There is no doubt that he said all the right things but little faith that he actually told the truth (or at least the whole truth). Given his exemplary record on the field, as a locker room leader and in prior dealings with the front office, it is impossible to think anything other than first-year general manager Ran Carthon made a major misstep in this case. ... As training camp approaches, there still are questions about the roster, including an absence of obvious contributors at one position, the uncertainty about the value of one newcomer and the troubling injury history of a veteran player.…

This episode opens with a roundup of recent personnel notes, which include draft pick signings, a free agent addition, and the retirement of a true Titans great. ... Wide receiver DeAndre Hopkins is available after the Arizona Cardinals released him, and Tennessee -- as it turns out -- needs wide receivers. A rundown of all the reasons general manager Ran Carthon and coach Mike Vrabel should want to sign Hopkins along with a look at some of the factors that could keep a deal from getting done. ... Treylon Burks has one injury-shortened season to his credit but clearly is the best wide receiver currently on the roster. The good news is that the 2022 first-round choice out of Arkansas is having a much better offseason than he did a year ago, and nothing better illustrates his current mindset than his recent desire -- and successful effort -- to keep travel issues from forcing him to miss a day of organized team activities. ... Quarterback Will Levis, this year's second-round pick, has looked much more like a rookie than someone who is ready to replace Ryan Tannehill thus far in OTAs. That is probably to be expected and should not be cause for concern at this point. ... Defensive back Elijah Molden was highly productive as a rookie in 2021. But he missed nearly all of 2022 with an injury, and now he has to carve out a new role for himself. A position change might be the way for him to do so, and Molden is working at a new spot this offseason.…

The NFL has implemented a rule change for the 2023 season that allows teams to dress an emergency, third-string quarterback for games. That player must be on the 53-man active roster and can play only if the first two are injured and/or ejected. Following the draft, coach Mike Vrabel said Will Levis is the Tennessee Titans' third-string quarterback, but the change likely will have a bigger impact on Malik Willis and his future with the team. ... In recent years, the Titans primarily have kept two quarterbacks on the active roster with a third on the practice squad. This change to the rules is likely to make them consider keeping three on the active roster for this season. ... Another thing to keep in mind is that first-year general manager Ran Carthon came from the San Francisco 49ers, a team that saw its Super Bowl hopes end last season when two quarterbacks were injured in the NFC Championship and coaches were forced to improvise a limited offense for the remainder of the contest. ... Organized team activities (OTAs), such as what took place this week, are voluntary and several players – most notably safety Kevin Byard and cornerback Kristian Fulton – were not in attendance. ... Both players have reason to be unhappy with the team. Byard has been asked to take a pay cut, and Fulton was one of the players Vrabel called out for consistent injury issues after the 2022 season. ... When asked about the two, Vrabel had decidedly different reactions.…

In an attempt to put the issues from his rookie season behind him, 2022 first-round pick Treylon Burks decided to stay put. The wide receiver, who battled conditioning and injury issues last season, decided to spend the offseason in Nashville, training at the team facility to better acclimate himself to the local conditions as well as to build rapport and trust with the coaching staff. ... This year's first-round pick, offensive lineman Peter Skoronski, still does not have a position, based on the team's rookie camp. Skoronski worked at both guard and tackle despite a college career that suggests he is one and not the other. ... Quarterback Will Levis, this year's second-round choice, looked comfortable running the offense during the rookie camp -- which he should have. Coach Mike Vrabel was not exactly quick, however, to heap praise on the Titans' newest quarterback of the future. ... Running back Tyjae Spears, the third-round selection, had nothing to say about his medical history when asked (repeatedly). ... The 2023 NFL schedule is out, and it has Tennessee on the go for an extended stretch during the middle part.…

Recent developments for the Tennessee Titans include a lawsuit filed by former left tackle Taylor Lewan, changes in the front office, including the departure of former interim general manager Ryan Cowden and the first post-draft media availability for select players, including quarterback Ryan Tannehill. ... Third-round draft pick Tyjae Spears could be the change-of-pace back the Titans have wanted for years. He was not a workhorse at Tulane, but was consistently productive when he had the ball in his hands. ... Fifth-round pick Josh Whyle should be someone the Titans know well given that he played at Cincinnati under coach Luke Fickell, who is coach Mike Vrabel's close friend. Whyle has the chance to step in as the replacement for departed free agent Austin Hooper. ... Sixth-round pick Jaelyn Duncan, a tackle out of Maryland, is the only one of the later selections who does not have an immediate path to the field. His college career suggests he needs a little time to develop but that the wait could be worth it. ... Seventh-round pick Colton Dowell is a homegrown product who grew up in nearby Lebanon and played college football at Tennessee-Martin. He did not put up huge numbers for most of his college career, but played best against the best competition, particularly a contest last fall against the University of Tennessee.…

No one would say the Tennessee Titans' selection of Northwestern tackle Peter Skoronski in the first round of the 2023 NFL Draft (11th overall) was a reach. The 6-foot-4, 315-pound All-American was widely considered to be among this year's top 10 prospects. However, pre-draft analysis included concern about his short arms, similar to what happened a year ago with cornerback Roger McCreary. The Titans selected McCreary in the second round, and he was one of their most consistent performers throughout the 2022 season. ... Skoronski was the first of six picks Tennessee made in this year's draft. All six were on offense, which is a franchise first. ... For the second year in a row, the Titans drafted someone they hope will be their quarterback of the future, Will Levis of Kentucky. Levis unexpectedly dropped out of the first round, and his selection -- a year after Malik Willis was picked in the third round -- was not universally celebrated by the fan base. ... To get Levis, the Titans traded up from the No. 41 overall pick to No. 35. By the time they made their third pick, a host of notable wide receivers were chosen, and if there is one position at which this team needed some immediate help, it was wide receiver. ... Tennessee finally selected a receiver in the seventh round. They made Colton Dowell of Tennessee-Martin their final pick (seventh round, 228 overall) and the 30th wide receiver overall selected. ... In his first draft as a general manager, Ran Carthon showed he was willing to be -- when possible -- aggressive. He also said he stuck to the team's draft board and that the focus on offense was not intentional.…

In recent years, the Tennessee Titans have made some notable selections on Day 2 of the NFL Draft. In 2016, for example, they came away with running back Derrick Henry in the second round and safety Kevin Byard in the third round. Two years later, they got outside linebacker Harold Landry with the 41st overall pick, which is exactly where they are scheduled to pick in this year's second round. Thoughts on what general manager Ran Carthon and his staff should do on Day 2 this year include a majority in favor of a tight end in the second round and help for the offensive line in the third round. ... Speaking of Byard, the two-time All-Pro became the lasted Titans player mentioned as someone who could be traded. That puts him in good company with Henry and quarterback Ryan Tannehill. No one expects all three to go, but which is most likely to be dealt depends on which member of the Bleav in Titans panel you believe.…
Jeffery Simmons' four-year, $94 million contract extension makes him the NFL's highest-paid defensive tackle in terms of guaranteed money ($66.91 million) and second to Aaron Donald in terms of average money over the next three seasons ($23.5 million). ... The deal means the Titans have Simmons' rights through the 2027 season. The structure of the contract, however, allows for Simmons to be released – not that such a thing seems likely at this moment – following the 2025 campaign. It also frees up more than $4 million of salary cap space for the current season. ... Most importantly, the transaction settles Tennessee's most pressing issue of the offseason and provides Simmons with the security and motivation that – given his personality – is likely to make him even more productive this year than he has been in his first four. ... According to current NFL mock drafts, three names come up most often in connection to the Titans and their first-round pick (No. 11 overall). They are: Ohio State tackle Paris Johnson Jr.; Kentucky quarterback Will Levis; and Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba. A look at what likely appeals to the Titans in regard to each of the three and opinions on which would be the best fit, if all three are available when Tennessee picks.…

Numerous reports say the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals are engaged in talks that would result in the Titans getting the No. 3 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft. Tennessee currently has six overall selections, the first of which is No. 11. ... If the Titans move up to No. 3, it almost certainly is because they want to pick a quarterback, and – barring a surprise in the first two selections – they will have a choice between Florida's Anthony Richardson and Kentucky's Will Levis. We look at both and what the Titans might be thinking in that regard. ... Tennessee's six overall selections do not amount to a ton of draft capital. In fact, based on value charts, all six picks are not enough to move from No. 11 to No. 3. So, we look at what it might take for the Titans to make such a move. ... Other reports say Tennessee and San Francisco are exploring a deal that would involve a swap of young quarterbacks Malik Willis, a third-round pick by the Titans in 2022, and Trey Lance, the No. 3 overall selection by San Francisco in 2021. General manager Ran Carthon has a history with Lance, which makes his reported interest in that move understandable. ... Assuming the Titans don't make any major moves and use the six picks they currently have, which positions should they prioritize in this year's draft? Offensive line and wide receiver are obvious. Opinions about the importance of adding a tight end in the draft differ.…
When asked about his quarterback situation at the latest NFL owners' meetings, Tennessee Titans coach Mike Vrabel said he would not guarantee that Ryan Tannehill would be the guy when the regular season started. His reluctance is understandable given what he said – and what ultimately happened – last offseason with wide receiver A.J. Brown. So, is it simply caution on Vrabel's part, or is there a legitimate chance that the franchise could make a change at the most important position on the field? ... Speaking of quarterbacks, Vrabel and/or general manager Ran Carthon have been or will be at the pro day workouts of the top five quarterback prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft. Either they simply are being thorough in their pre-daft prep or – if given the opportunity – the Titans will draft a quarterback for the second straight year. If Tennessee takes one of those top prospects, the panel looks at what it will mean for Tannehill and his current backup, Malik Willis. ... Betonline.ag currently has the over/under for Titans wins in 2023 at 7.5, which is one of the lowest in the NFL. It is still early in the offseason, but there is reason to believe that is a proper number. ... Finally, the Titans plan to wear Houston Oilers throwback uniforms for one game in 2023. Should it be when they face the Houston Texans, or would that be inappropriate?…

Several players were released early this offseason to create salary cap space. Apparently, the Tennessee Titans need more, and they have asked Pro Bowl safety Kevin Byard to take a pay cut. Thus far, Byard has refused, and reports indicate that he could be released if the sides can't reach an acceptable agreement to both. It is a stunning and potentially troublesome development in the minds of many Titans fans. ... The latest free-agent addition is veteran cornerback Sean Murphy-Bunting, a 2019 second-round pick who spent his first four seasons with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tennessee has spent a lot of draft capital at cornerback in recent years, who why are free agent dollars needed at that same position? ... Wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine did not immediately accept the Titans' first contract offer this offseason and elected to explore his options in free agency. Apparently, he did not find much, and quickly re-signed with Tennessee on a one-year deal. ... Westbrook-Ikhine's is the only deal the Titans have given to a wide receiver this offseason. It is an obvious position of need. So, is this an indication that franchise officials plan to address that spot in the draft? ... Two members of the 2022 Titans are moving on, including tackle Dennis Daley, who signed a two-year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Many who watched him last season are glad to see Daley anywhere else but in Tennessee uniform.…
First-year general manager Ran Carthon leaned heavily on his San Francisco connections at the start of free agency. Three of the first five players with whom the Tennessee Titans agreed to contract terms spent at least one season with the 49ers while Carthon was a member of that front office. They are: inside linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair, edge rusher Arden Key and guard Daniel Brunskill. All three have limited experience as starters in their careers but figure to plug prominent holes in Tennessee's lineup. ... The biggest deal, however, was to former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Andre Dillard. His three-year, $29 million pact makes him the presumed replacement for Taylor Lewan at left tackle even though the 2019 first-round draft pick started just four games in his first four years in the league. ... Defensive lineman Teair Tart and offensive lineman Aaron Brewer were retained with restricted free agent tenders, and defensive lineman Naquan Jones will be back via an exclusive rights free agent tender. ... Linebacker Dvaid Long, defensive lineman Demarcus Walker and right guard Nate Davis agreed to deals with other teams and will move on. Long's departure is most unlikely given his importance to the defense in recent years and the fact that he agreed to surprisingly affordable terms with the Miami Dolphins. ... There is some intrigue with wide receiver Nick Westbrook-Ikhine, who declined the team's offer of a new contract so that he could weigh his options. If he does sign elsewhere, it will further diminish a wide receiver group that already is woefully short on players and production.…
In recent days, one national media outlet reported that the Tennessee Titans and first-year general manager Ran Carthon are entertaining trade offers for running back Derrick Henry, who has one year remaining on his current contract and is a little more than one year removed from a serious foot injury. Hosts David Boclair, Denard Walker and John Glennon explore the possibility, the potential fan reaction and additional fallout related to the idea that the two-time NFL rushing champion could be in a different uniform this season. ... With or without Henry running the ball this season, the Titans need their offensive line to be better. The Kansas City Chiefs elected not to use the franchise tag on left tackle Orlando Brown Jr., which will make him one of this year's most coveted free agents. Denard Walker has expressed his admiration for Brown previously and continues to do so this week. Meantime, recently released Tennessee left tackle Taylor Lewan has made it known on social media that he would like the opportunity to take Brown's place in Kansas City. ... Speaking of social media, Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jeffery Simmons has scrubbed all references to the Titans from his accounts. It is a move that stirs memories of last year's fallout with wide receiver A.J. Brown. But is it a sign of things to come for Simmons, who currently is scheduled to play this season on the fifth-year team option of his rookie contract. ... Finally, the Baltimore Ravens elected to use the non-exclusive franchise tender on quarterback Lamar Jackson, which means he is still free to get offers from other teams. A look at the potential fallout from that decision and whether it might impact how the Titans and the rest of the league do business in the future.…
