It's election night 1945 and the working class is about to elect a new Labour government and herald a seismic change in British society that will alter the old order for good. Meanwhile in the bowels of a large country house, beautiful privileged Julie, daughter of an aristocrat, is playing a dangerous seductive game with John, his lordship's chauffeur. So begins Patrick Marber's brilliant update and adaptation of August Strindberg's 19th century classic Miss Julie. What follows is a night of brutal psychological cat and mouse, explored through Marber's typically searing dialogue. Themes of class, sex and money are dynamically explored and build over one fateful night to an explosive climax. This is an unmissable opportunity to see a great play reinterpreted for our times by an equally great contemporary playwright with a wonderful trio of Stables actors ready to bring it dramatically to life. Is an interest in writing a genetic thing? Does the ability to write get passed down in your DNA? That's what uncle and nephew Stuart and Richard Baillie set out to explore. Stuart's dad Peter (that's Richard's grandfather) was an author with ten novels and countless short stories published in the 1950s and Peter's sons and now one of his grandchildren have had aspirations to write the great British novel and follow in Peter's footsteps. But none of them ever have - can we get to the root of the problem? What's stopping them? Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…
Mary Slessor was one of the first women to be commemorated in the Hall of Scottish Heroes half way up the Wallace Monument near Stirling. So who was she? What had she done to earn her place among such exalted company? Her story is a fascinating one; from Dundonian Mill Girl to missionary in remotest Africa and then becoming the first female magistrate in the British Empire. Mary Slessor certainly earned her place among the greats of Scotland. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…
Richard Fryer doesn't object to being described as an adventurer in the true tradition of adventuring. This interview was recorded a few years ago just after the publication of his book Lost Odyssey. He discusses his passion for boats, the high seas and for the West Indies. He explains how he came to love boats and the sea and recalls how he survived 36 hours in a tropical storm in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. He also recalls the day he made Odyssey his own and the trials and tribulations of trying to sail his boat from Cuba to the USA. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.…
I count Mark Jardine as a friend, and one of long standing. His has been a life committed to the service of others whether in his profressional life as a funeral director or in his private life where, among many things he has been a bereavement counsellor and is founder of The People's Project. Mark's legacy though, will be in the creation of the Roucan Loch crematorium and woodland burial site https://www.roucanloch.co.uk/ it's a crematorium like no other and as we say in the podcast, it is very much one man's vision of how we should treat our loved ones on their final journey. As a young reporter watching Councillor Tom McAughtrie in action was fascinating. Over four decades he has been involved in some of the big decisions that have shaped not just the town of Dumfries but of the region as a whole. Over the years, and thanks to the the advent of social media, Tom and I have kept in touch and when I started doing these podcasts I immiediately thought Tom, with his strong views and opinions, would make a great subject and listening back to the result of the couple of hours we spent together I don't think I was wrong. You'll not be disappointed, Tom's views are as forthright as ever, especially when it comes to council officials working from home and Labour party complacency in the last decade and a half. Ross Drury has never backed away from a challenge and his new challenge, along with business partner Dan Hutton, is to turn the Stade Hall in to the coolest village hall of all time, to create what he describes as a significant cultural building in the centre of town, hosting everything from pilates to opera and theatre via craft fairs and anything else local people choose to use it for - it's a blank canvass he says. On leaving university all Ross wanted to do was pursue a career in theatre but always brutally honest about the range of his talents, he says he's a terrible actor which is why he chose to direct, "if I wanted to be involved in good theatre I had to stop acting" he says. Just out of university when the financial crisis hit he struggled to make his projects work and says on many occasions he was one mistake away from being homeless. In this interview Ross talks with brutal honesty about his successes and his failures, about the need to be objective about your own work and says quite bluntly that as far as his career is concerned, at nearly 40 he has still not achieved what he set out to do. Last time we spoke to Lotti Conway we asked: "How would you cope if all your memories were erased overnight?" Lotti had a massive seizure in April 2020 that left her in hospital, scared and alone as she couldn't remember where she was or why she was there. Doctors diagnosed Autoimmune encephalitis and when we met her journey along the road to recovery had begun, with no one quite sure where the destination was going to be.Eighteen months later we've been back to talk to Lotti and mum Kate to find out how the journey along that road has been going and in this interview you'll hear how they are both coming to terms with the fact that Lotti's condition is not going to get any better and her short term memory problems are something they are having to come to deal with as a part of every day life. The pair admit there have been a lot of tears, but as you will hear there's a lot of laughter and humour too, that helps them get through their darker moment.Hear her first interview by following this link... https://on.soundcloud.com/bmipwPhotograph by Georgie Piper Hosted on Acast. Chris New sees himself as just a jobbing actor but once you've listened to this interview we're sure you'll agree he is much more than that. Then beyond that he'll be staging three plays he's in the process of writing. But it back and listen to Stuart Baillie's interview with Chris as he retraces his story and recalls the people who have inspired and encouraged him and how being diagnosed with autism in his 40s has given him a whole new perspective on his life.
