In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by one of my all-time liturgical heroes Chris Carstens to talk all things liturgy – and the centrality of Christ at Mass. What is the liturgy? What is it meant to do and how are we meant to do it? Why do we worship liturgically? And how can we do it better? Plus, we talk about the future of the liturgy (and how the liturgy used to be) and Chris brings all kinds of hope and good thoughts with him on this visit by unpacking what he's seeing, on the ground, in the liturgical formation classes he teaches. It's a wonderful episode all about how we worship God, why, and how we can do it better. For more from Chris check out Adoremus Bulletin . Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. In this special episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined, from Rome, by Fr. Haig Chahinian, a priest in the Armenian Catholic Church, and the CEO of Salt and Light Media , to talk about the importance of a pope, the papacy, and papal conclaves for the Eastern Catholic Churches. While Fr. Haig was originally scheduled to talk about Eastern Catholicism our plans were completely up-ended by the passing of the Holy Father and the calling of the conclave – so, a very special episode is being dropped here, in your feeds, instead. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Brian Jacobson, a former Protestant pastor and a convert to the Catholic faith, to unpack his incredible story and the reasons why he absolutely fell in love with the Catholic faith. From the initial realization – at an ecumenical Bible study – that him and his fellow Protestants couldn't agree on the "essentials" of the faith, Brian's journey into looking for the source and authority of Scriptural interpretation takes a number of wild twists and turns before arriving in the arms of the ancient Catholic faith. It's an amazing story and Brian is not only a passionate storyteller but a good one, at that! You can tell he spent years preaching. I truly hope you love this episode! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend author, podcaster, and former Episcopalian priest Andrew Petiprin to talk unpack one of the biggest misconceptions about the Catholic Church: that Catholicism is simply another Christian denomination. With aplomb, charity, and with Scripture and the history books in hand, Andrew explains exactly what's wrong with thinking of Catholicism as just another denomination, why that matters, and why it's abundantly clear from history and Scripture that the Catholic Church is unique in a sea of Christian choices. Plus, we unpack the danger of thinking of the Church as an institution, the notion of the "rules" of Catholicism, and so much more. For more from Andrew listen to his complete conversion story way back on Episode 69 of the podcast. You can find Andrew's book, Faith Unboxed at Catholic Answers or any fine bookseller. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Hugh Owen, the founder and director of the Kolbe Center for the Study of Creation to talk about the Catholic perspective on the literal story of creation. Can Catholics believe in a literal reading of Genesis? Has the Catholic Church officially adopted the theory of evolution? What does the science actually say? And what is lost is the typical discussion between science, evolution, and creation? Hugh joins me to unpack these questions and more with some pretty fascinating perspectives to questions and concerns that – I know – are on the minds of many Protestant Christians who are considering Catholicism – and many Catholics looking to reconcile the literal reading of the Bible with Science and the Catholic faith. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend Matthew Becklo, writer, editor, and Publishing Director for Bishop Barron's Word on Fire Catholic Ministries, to talk about the Catholic "both/and" paradigm that uniquely defines the Church that Christ founded. Neither "earthbound" or too "heavenly-minded," Becklo shows how, time and again, the Catholic Church walks the line between being too worldly and being too disengaged with the world. In how the Church worships, the role of the sacraments, Christology, the nature of the Church, and the Protestant Reformation. Becklo demonstrates how throughout history the Catholic Church has paved the way which balances both the role of Scripture and the place of tradition. This is such a deep and fascinating conversation. I hope you love it! To check out Matthew's great new book head over to Word on Fire . Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the one and only Fr. Robert Spitzer, SJ, PhD in a conversation that aims to turn the conventional tropes about Faith vs. Science on its head and to talk about areas where faith fills in the gaps left by science. The host of EWTN's Father Spitzer's Universe, the author of over 18 books and many scholarly articles, and the President of the Magis Center of Faith and Reason and the Napa Institute Fr. Spitzer, has the credentials coming out of his ears to tackle this kind of topic and he brings his enormous wealth of experience and insight to our humble little podcast this week. We tackle topics of the origins of the universe, the soul, beauty, Eucharistic miracles, out-of-body experiences, and many more areas where science simply fails to offer an explanation – but faith has had one all along! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Sophia Nikolai, a self-described anti-Catholic who is here to share her absolutely incredible conversion story with us. With an anti-Catholic, Evangelical background, Sophia considered herself firmly grounded in her Christian faith until an encounter with a quotation from the Early Church Fathers and some pretty miraculous interventions began her on a journey completely and utterly out of her comfort zone. Listen to Sophia's amazing journey which includes burning rosaries, ripping up prayer books, and trying to convince her Catholic husband (and his family) that they were all doomed – before, ultimately, becoming Catholic herself! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Jill Simons, author, speaker, and the driving force behind Many Parts Ministries , which helps Catholics discern their spiritual gifting and charisms. We're going to talk, this week, about how we figure out where we fit in the Catholic Church – especially for those who have just become Catholic, will become Catholic shortly, or are thinking about becoming Catholic. We talk about how to discern what you're good at, how the lay person in the Catholic Church can and should get involved, and how the Body of Christ is truly enabled when Catholics figure out where they fit – and get involved there! In this very special episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my two friends Catholic Answers apologist Joe Heschmeyer and Gospel Simplicity host Austin Suggs for an extraordinary conversation about what it takes to convert to Catholicism. This is the most cordial, thoughtful conversation you'll ever hear! Austin, a Protestant Christian, has spent many years on his fantastic YouTube channel talking to the best and brightest in the Catholic, Orthodox, and Protestant churches so I'm joined by Joe Heschmeyer to ask Austin why does he remain a Protestant? And what would it take for him to consider converting to Catholicism? I'm so thrilled to bring together my friends to weigh the evidence, dig deeply, and tackle Austin's objections to Catholicism and what kind of evidence it would take for someone as thoughtful as Austin to become Catholic. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Dr. Cheryl Hughes to talk about one of the most prolific "convert makers" in American Catholic history: Archbishop Fulton Sheen. Dr. Hughes, a biographer of Fulton Sheen, joins me to talk about what made his evangelism so effective, what we can learn from him today, and how God used Abp. Sheen who was in the right place at the right time. We talk about the role of Catholic apologetics when speaking to our non-Catholic Christian brothers and sisters, the importance of catechesis without compromise, and even hear Dr. Hughes own conversion story! It's a great conversation. To read more about Archbishop Fulton Sheen check out Dr. Hughes's book, Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen: Convert Maker out from Ignatius Press . In this not-to-be-missed episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Catholic Answers contributor, speaker, and apologist Joel S. Peters to talk about arguments for Sola Scriptura – "Bible alone" Christianity – and reasons why he thinks non-Catholic Christians should reconsider this theological position. For me, as host of this show, this topic gets to the core of what drove me to a deeper investigation of Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy: the question of the interpretation of Scripture and, especially, questions of how Scripture was historically used to underpin Christianity. In this conversation, Joel and I begin there, in the Early Church, and talk about what framework the first Christians used for understanding their faith – was it Sola Scriptura? We dig in to a lot else, besides, and there's lots of love about this conversation. If you know someone who would benefit from thinking deeply about their position on the infallible rule(s) of faith in Christianity, this episode if for them! Joel brings light – and not heat – to a sometimes contentious topic that is at the heart of Christianity. Russ brings an absolute wealth of knowledge about this intriguing biblical artefact to explain why it is absolutely a miracle – a tool for evangelization – for the 21st century. Russ talks about the scientific data, the attempts to discredit the Shroud of Turin (all of which have failed!), and why we should believe it is what faithful Catholics have believed that it is since the very beginning. Also, we dig into biblical clues, what the most recent and ground-breaking science has found about the Shroud, and how to use it to share the reality of Jesus and His Church with skeptics. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the incredible Brayden Cook, the host of The Catechumen YouTube channel, to talk about his conversion to Catholicism as an intern Baptist minister. Brayden's story – which is my own story in so many aspects – begins by encountering the Early Church Fathers and realizing that they didn't look like his local Baptist and non-denominational churches. This realization spurred Brayden to look deeper in Catholicism and to begin to unwind some of the misconceptions that he held about Catholics, dig deeper into the Early Church, and eventually decide to become a Catholic himself. Brayden shares his amazing insights this week on the show. For more from Brayden check out The Catechumen YouTube channel for all of his amazing content. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my new best friend Nic Davidson to talk about how he, and his whole family, converted to Catholicism. Nic's got an amazing story to tell. As a missionary following the call of Christ Nic has some amazing adventures to recount, how God was with him and his family every step of the way, and how listening and following that call he had become to accustomed to led him to pursue Christ right into the Catholic Church. Nic discusses the importance of meeting good Catholics including an incredible priest named Father Mike Schmitz – you may have heard of him! How reading from the Early Church Fathers made him realize that the roots of Christianity were Catholic. And how the beautiful Theology of the Body teaching was exactly what he needed – and made sense of human sexuality and marriage, and was found no where else in the Christian world! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the renown expert on the Bible, apologist Gary Michuta. With bucketloads of insight, wisdom, and decades of research and experience Gary explains exactly how the Bible came out of the Catholic Church and why understanding the origins of the Bible is so important when talking to our non-Catholic Christian friends – who love their Bibles! Gary explains the process used to discern which books of the Bible belonged in the Canon, how this began in the very early Church councils, and why the Bibles supported by the Reformers actually removed books that had originally been in the Bible, accepted by all Christians, all along. It's a fascinating and informative look at any extremely important area of apologetics – something at the very core of Protestant Christianity. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the indefectible Dr. Larry Chapp to talk about the heart of what draws Catholic converts into the Catholic Church – the truth, beauty, and goodness – and what sucks when those things don't seem to exist in the way they ought to in day-to-day, on-the-ground Catholicism. With Dr. Chapp's trademark clear-eyed perspective, we talk about divisions in the Church, what happens when the truth of Catholicism is tested against fringe ideas on the left and the right, and what to make of those in places of authority who seem to speak out of both sides of their mouths. We tackle the beauty of the liturgy, the problematic nature of some Latin Mass communities, and the trouble with suppressing something beautiful without encouraging anything to grow in its place. And, finally, we talk about the goodness of Catholicism – and what happens when it fails to live up to its own standard. With respect, poignancy, and a good helping of Dr. Chapp's no-holds-barred straight shooting, we have an absolutely fantastic conversation about those things that are drawing in Catholic converts, what sucks when they fail to live up to expectations, and why y'all should be Catholic anyhow. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by David Douglas, President of the St. Therese Institute of Faith and Mission , to tell us his long, winding, and incredibly compelling faith journey. It begins, for David, in a socialist commune, the son of a prominent bluegrass musician, David's parents had a radical conversion to Evangelical Christianity through the Jesus People movement in the 1980's which would forever shape the trajectory of David's faith life – and this would only be the beginning. Through overseas missionary work, life on nearly every continent on the globe, and through deep experiences of charismatic, evangelical, and biblical faith David's journey culminated, in a way, with his decision to join the Catholic Church with his family – and it's only continued from there! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the incredible Ken Kopelson to tell what I think is one of the most unique and amazing conversion stories I've ever heard. Raised in a conservative Jewish home, Ken began asking questions about Christianity when a family member converted and began to share about Christ. Those discussions sparked a radical conversion to Christ and 45 years of serving as God's "errand boy" across all manner of ministries, crisscrossing the world, to go where God sent him – and do what God wanted him to do. Then, prompted by the desire to plant a new church and found a new denomination that got back to Christian roots, Ken began to explore the Early Church. And, remarkably, discovered that it was Catholic. This is an utterly fascinating journey. I hope you enjoy it! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic , I'm joined by Brandon Eaves and Chris Kellam, two former Evangelical seminarians, to talk about how, as Evangelicals studying Scripture, they discovered the Biblical basis for the papacy and the Catholic view of justification. Brandon and Chris, two good friends with a great dynamic, explain how many of their misconceptions about Catholicism were dismantled as they looked into Scripture, the witness of the Early Church, and in the actual practice of the Catholic faith. How the papacy makes sense from Scripture and in our experience of Early Christianity. And how the understanding of justification by the Protestant Reformers isn't rooted in history – and how Protestants and Catholics are often saying the same things using different words when they talk about justification, salvation, and sanctification. Chris and Brandon have both been on the show to share their conversion stories. You can find these on our YouTube channel or look for episodes 248 and 242. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Avery Reukauf, a Catholic convert with one of the most incredible conversion stories you'll ever hear! From the untimely death of her mother following a radical decision to be baptized to her decision to join the military and her deployment to Iraq to her whirlwind marriage and the birth of her children to miracle upon miracle as Avery and her husband move from denomination to denomination in fervent pursuit of Christ – you'll be on the absolute edge of your seat listening to this faith journey which even includes an insane twist ending: that Avery was Catholic almost all along! Friends, I can't encourage you enough to listen to and share this episode because there's so much in here that I can't even describe. In the end, it's the story of how through the graces of baptism, God pursues those that He wants for His own – and, ultimately, that's all of us! Wow. What a story. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by speaker, author, and accomplished Catholic Answers apologist Dr. Karlo Broussard to talk about praying to the saints. How do we know it's OK to pray to the saints? Why would the Church encourage it when it seems discouraged in the Bible? How do we know they can hear us? How is that even possible? This, and much more, as Karlo uses Scripture and evidence from the Early Church to explain why it isn't only OK to pray to the saints but actually encouraged – and a very, very good practice! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Dr. Matthew Wiseman for one of the most phenomenal conversion stories we've had on this podcast. Raised in a devoutly Southern Baptist home, Dr. Wiseman and his family, seeking a deeper understanding of the Bible, found themselves immersed in the Messianic Movement – also known as the "Hebrew Roots" movement – and seeking to put into practice the Old Testament Jewish laws as New Testament Christians. What transpires from here is nothing short of incredible. Listen and learn what drove Dr. Wiseman deeper into his Christian faith, what put him at odds with trying to follow the Bible to the "letter of the law," and how the same problems with plague Sola Scriptura Christians found their way into those trying to practice as pure a Christianity as possible – in the Messianic communities. Ultimately, learn what led Dr. Wiseman to embrace Catholicism and its natural outgrowth of Judaism and how it all came together to make sense in the culmination of his story. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by my friend theologian, biblical scholar, and former Protestant pastor Dr. John Bergsma to talk about the deeply biblical roots of the Year of Jubilee. Pope Francis has declared 2025 a "Year of Jubilee" but what exactly does that mean? What are the "sacred portals" opening up across Rome? What kinds of special graces are available for Catholics? And where in the world does this idea even come from? With his deep knowledge of Scripture, his sensibilities as a Former Protestant pastor, and his incredible insights from history and the Early Church Dr. Bergsma explains everything you need to know about the Year of Jubilee, its importance, and how to explain it to your non-Catholic or new Catholics friends – or even Catholics who have been Catholic for a long, long time! In this episode of The Cordial Catholic , I'm joined once again by one of my favourite guests and yours, my good friend Rod Bennett. Rod is a Catholic convert with a unique way of looking at the faith and a penchant for asking some of the most penetrating questions about what connects as divides us as Protestants and Catholics. On this episode, we talk about the question of Christian unity and how can Protestants, ever, accomplish what Jesus prayed for in John 17? It's an utterly fascinating conversation with some of the best insights Rod has ever brought us including how do Protestants find a Bible-believing church when they first become Protestant and don't know their Bible yet? How Protestants agree to disagree and still have unity? What are the essentials that Protestant Christians agree on? And more... With charity and his trademark cordial, down-home demeanour, Rod challenges our non-Catholic Christian listeners to think hard about these tough questions and our Catholic listeners to humbly, in charity, have answers at hand. For more from Rod Bennett, check out his numerous previous appearances in the archives of the show including conversations about Catholic Witnesses to the Early Church ( Episode 141 ) and Were the Early Christians Catholic? In this amazing conversation, Nathan shares the heart of ecumenism: how we can reach out to our separated brethren – other non-Catholic Christian communities – to successfully find common ground and work towards a closer relationship. We talk about Christ's vision in John 17, how to understand non-Catholic Christian communities especially for converts, and how to reconcile the truth found only in the Catholic Church with the Body of Christ, broken and separated, in other Christian communities. Listen and learn, in this episode, about the deep biblical roots of purgatory in the Bible. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by Wendy and Zoe, from the Instagram page Catechumemes , to talk about their absolutely remarkable conversions to Catholicism – as two best friends on a wild theological and spiritual journey! Wendy and Zoe are truly amazing. As two Christians taking their faith seriously they dug deep into every theological topic imaginable, sharing late night conversations and days long debates on everything from baptism to communion to the nature of the Church. But, when topic after topic began coming up Catholic these two ardent Calvinists – serious about Reformed theology and the Baptist tradition – had to ask some tough questions about what they thought they knew about Catholicism. Man, what a conversation this was! We cover everything from the Early Church Fathers to the Sacraments to apostolic succession and the papacy and, in Wendy and Zoe's own words, what they felt had been "robbed" from them in Protestantism – and what they discovered in the Catholic Church! We tackle the underlying philosophy of the Reformation – what is a reformation or a revolution? – and what was the original intentions of the Reformers? We also dig into what led up to the Reformation and the corruption in the Catholic Church, the problem with indulgences, and the idea of the "unchaining" of the Gospel by the Protestant Reformers. In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the wonderful Sam Nunnally. Sam spent two decades as a charismatic, evangelical pastor before leaving to pursue the truth of Catholicism – a journey which took him many more years to confront, understand, and finally embrace... and it's all on his story, this week on the show! Sam's story is a phenomenal one – clocking in at one of the longest – including a serious examination of Sola Scriptura in an approach and context which we've never heard before on the show, a deep study of charismatic gifts in the Early Church, and some seriously heart-wrenching moments of confronting and accepting the truth claims of Catholicism. This is a fantastic story of someone absolutely in pursuit of Christ, coming up Catholic! For more from Sam check out his Instagram account (one of my favourites). In this episode of The Cordial Catholic, I'm joined by the extraordinary Justine Callis from The Theology of Conversion . She shares her journey from a staffer at a non-denominational, Evangelical Mega Church to a Catholic convert – and what drew her in. Her story – of learning about the Eucharist, the magisterium, the Early Church and more – is the story of so many converts but the incredible MIRACLES that accompanied her along the way make for some AMAZING stories. Including one about Dr. Scott Hahn and the beginning of their amazing friendship! For more from Justine check out Theology of Conversion on Instagram: Send your feedback to cordialcatholic@gmail.com.
