Lost Cultures: Living Legacies

On the Season 2 debut of Lost Cultures: Living Legacies , we travel to Bermuda, an Atlantic island whose history spans centuries and continents. Once uninhabited, Bermuda became a vital stop in transatlantic trade, a maritime stronghold, and a cultural crossroads shaped by African, European, Caribbean, and Native American influences. Guests Dr. Kristy Warren and Dr. Edward Harris trace its transformation from an uninhabited island to a strategic outpost shaped by shipwrecks, colonization, the transatlantic slave trade, and the rise and fall of empires. Plus, former Director of Tourism Gary Phillips shares the story of the Gombey tradition, a vibrant performance art rooted in resistance, migration, and cultural fusion. Together, they reveal how Bermuda’s layered past continues to shape its people, culture, and identity today. As part of this, Baxter Dury stopped by for an In Conversation with music journalist Dan Stubbs to talk recent autobiography Chaise Longue, legacies and more.…
We're at Reading Festival this episode, talking to headliners Fall Out Boy about mixing it up - and their new/old EP, Sunflower Bean about playing bass while crowd surfing, and a very wet Sports Team about Pete Doherty's breakfast choices.
It's a Bestival extravaganza as we're Dorset bound, talking to IDLES (pre-chart success), Sundara Karma about what they've been beavering away at, House of Vans headliners Spring King about keeping calm on the road, Anteros' Laura about being bullied for her impeccable English, plus Black Honey and The Xcerts.…
We're at one of Spain's best-known festivals, Benicàssim this episode, where we find out what Metronomy has been up to (spoiler: there's new music sooner rather than later), what BODEGA's reading habits are (unsurprisingly highbrow, as it happens), and just how tired Shame are. We also made them miss Madness. Sorry, boys.…
We're in a hot and sunny Madrid for this episode, as we head to Mad Cool festival. Find out what FIDLAR have been up to, how Perfume Genius is working on his dance moves, the best £20 Serge from Kasabian has ever spent, how Wolf Alice plan to celebrate a year of 'Visions of a Life', plus loads more.
It's up to Hull for 53 Degrees North with Slaves, Dream Wife, The Horrors, LIFE and more. Find out why the festival exists in the first place, why Dream Wife are wearing matching t-shirts (and their experience of walls of death last week in Germany), The Horrors' Faris spills on his various artistic projects, and discover precisely nothing about the imminent new album from Slaves.…
A series in which the bands are allowed to talk about anything at all... except their music. It's a wild ride with Peace, as they discuss banana theories, peeling lemons and expanding their vocabulary - not to mention frontman Harry's claim to plank before planking 'was a thing', and now you can listen to the whole conversation via the DIY Podcast.…
We're down on the pier once again, with interviews from across The Great Escape, including Demob Happy, Yonaka, Hatchie and Drahla.
As festival season kicks off, updates from two of the first. We were once again at the Brudenell Social Club for Live at Leeds, hosting both the DIY and Neu stages there. We talk to stage headliners Pale Waves about their recent US tour, Anteros about finalising album details, and Whenyoung on preparing to support some heroes. Then, from Liverpool Sound City, we're with Peace as they prepare to headline the whole shebang (featuring van playlist info), Matt Maltese recovers from a noisy air conditioning unit, and King Nun get visual. On audio.…
We headed to Austin, Texas once again for SXSW - and spoke to some of our (and your) favourites along the way. Features interviews with Shame, Public Access TV, LIFE, Baywaves, Boniface and a human panda.
There's just one rule with this series: artists can talk about anything at all - except their music. Twin Atlantic talk Tiger Woods' literary skills, and travelling the world, while looking out of the window of a van.
There's just one rule with this series: artists can talk about anything at all - except their music. In this episode, Diet Cig's Alex Luciano delves deep into her celebrity gossip obsession, from favourite Kardashians to being introduced to British tabloid stars.
Each September, the German city of Hamburg hosts Reeperbahn Festival, a bonanza of new artists (and a few old favourites - Liam Gallagher popped along this time 'round). While out there, we caught up with a handful of DIY favourites - Black Honey, Matt Maltese, LIFE and Pixx.
This year saw Bestival take residence in a new home - that of the Lulworth Estate in Dorset. The weather may have had its way with the site (while we're talking to Circa Waves they're not even sure if they'll get to play that day), but spirits were still high. We also find out what Twin Atlantic are up to on the first anniversary of their latest album, 'GLA'.…
In the first of our new audio series 'Anything but...' El Hunt, the boss of bizarre lines of enquiry and DIY magazine's features editor, chats to some of her favourite acts, but not a word about the music. This episode features the brilliant Marika Hackman, (cough, who has just released an awesome, heart-breaking Christmas EP on Transgressive but we're not mentioning that obviously, cough, cough), covering all topics from cyber crime to killer squirrels. Enjoy. Theme song: Catholic Action - L.U.V Buy here: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/album/l.u.v-single/id1090210763 Thanks to Audioboom for the use of their lovely studios.…
This episode comes to you recorded live from brand new South London venue Omeara, where DIY took over the place to launch our top picks for 2107 that we think will be making a splash in the coming twelve months. In this episode we hear from Loyle Carner, Declan McKenna, Abattoir Blues and a certain king of the castle... Ben Lovett from Mumford's (it's his venue, be rude not to eh?). #DIYmagazine #Livemusic #music #Mumford #omeara #London…

Oh, and because we can, we have a quick chat with the now main stage champion that is Courtney Barnett (so that the episode is not entirely Scottish, sorry about that). Anything But… with Sadie Dupuis! Sadie Dupuis is a busy bee. Along with fronting the ever-ace Speedy Ortiz, she’s also at the helm of the banger-central pop colo project Sad13, and has been touring all over the place with both bands. But anyway, enough about that - on Anything But… music is a BANNED topic. Instead, Sadie met up with DIY’s El Hunt in Brighton to discuss horoscopes, vegan food, and which solid British traditions ‘Get A Yes’ from her. Metronomy also tell Will why they may just not turn up to headline their stage, plus we have a SUPER-interview with not just Marika Hackman but also Blaenavon - who are saying plenty of things that may make their management squirm! In our new audio series 'Anything but...' El Hunt, the boss of bizarre lines of enquiry and DIY magazine's features editor, really gets to know some of her favourite acts, by not uttering a word about the music (well until she gets distracted and forgets, feel free to tweet us if you feel aggrieved about that) and records it for your pleasure. In this episode El is joined by Stephen and Audun of two piece Liverpool jangly-indie pop sensations Her's (or 'international supersonic spectral wave band', as they define themselves). The plan is not to talk about music and they do get close, but manage to divert to chats about dream farms, Travelodge groundhog days, Norway day spent in a van and some home improvement success stories. Returning to the venue that they played their first ever London show in, Liverpool's Circa Waves have come a long way in that time. Worldwide tours, main stages of festivals and with the release of their second record this year, they were invited back by DIY Magazine to celebrate that and their recent cover for the mag, to one of London's most intimate shows, on one damn muggy night, so we caught up with lead singer Kieran on the day, and some buzzing (if a little sweat drenched) fans after the show. Welcome to the first Get In The Van podcast a brand new series from DIY Magazine's podcast network, HI! PARTYBABY from California, U S of A shot to attention in 2016 with their debut record 'The Golden Age of Bullshit' but this wasn't exactly their first rodeo. Having toured in other acts (Portugal.
