×Last week we looked at the Confession that anchors us in eternity. This week we shift back to the edges, exploring how the living God meets each of us exactly where we are and draws us towards Him. As we are drawn in, we are afforded opportunities to question and refine the Convictions of our own unique experience. Preached by Kevin Makins and Nina Schuurman-Drenth on May 25 2025, in the Eucharist Church Sanctuary.…
Our sermon series pivots in this fourth podcast, from looking at the wider Church to observing our own humble congregation. Pastors Kevin and Nina explore the confession at the centre of the Christian faith and explain why it contains good news, and even better, access to a good God.
Co-pastors Kevin and Nina continue our series through the past and present of the Church, exploring the way of thinking that lead us to this present moment, and the emerging trends that suggest something has changed. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary, May 11 2025
Eucharist Church pastors Kevin and Nina tag team the second sermon in our series on "This is the Church" by exploring the time we find ourselves. What has happened in the last 100 years of Canadian Church history? How did we find ourselves in such steep decline and what happens next? Only God knows, but here's our best attempt to name when we are. Also, since the recording didn't happen this week, we've recorded this one podcast style. Recording in the Eucharist Study, May 5 2025.…
Tag team time: Kevin and Nina are tackling a six week series, side by side in the pulpit, with the hope of answering one question: What is the Church? We're travelling across time and space, as high as the highest steeple and as low as the dirt beneath our feet (or a messy sidewalk), to tell the story of where and when we are, and how it impacts us as God's people. Excited to have you along for the ride. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary, Sunday April 27 2025.…
Pastor Nina Schuurman-Drenth preaches on the resurrection all around us. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary, Easter Sunday, April 20 2025.
Pastor Kevin preaches on the palm procession, the paradox of projection, the terrible crucifixion, and the God who holds it all. Included also is a call to worship from Scott, including "I Feel Sorry for Jesus" by Naomi Shihab Nye.
A sermon on extravagant offerings and burning alive. Preached by Pastor Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, April 6 2025.
Don't let the title fool you, this is a good news sermon. God is merciful. Let's stay humble. Sermon preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, March 23 2025.
Nina Schuurman-Drenth on how to stay sane in a world full of foxes. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctaury, March 16 2025.
A sermon on the wilderness, temptation, and yes, the devil. It's time to take this stuff seriously. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary, March 9 2025.
Preaching Guild member Alison Witt offers an honest and thoughtful reflection on the reality of "thin places". Preached by Alison Witt in the Eucharist Sanctuary. Sunday, March 2, 2025
An exploration of Jesus' less popular sermon. Preached by Nina Schuurman-Drenth in the Eucharist Sanctuary, February 23 2025.
The old adage is true. Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, February 9 2025.
Preaching Guild member Will Allen gives a powerful word about prophetic love, and how it relates to location and suffering. Preached by Will Allen in the Eucharist Sanctuary, February 2 2025.
A sermon about prayer. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary by Kevin Makins on January 26, 2025.
On maps, spiritual encounter, experience, explanation, and the recognition that "Surely the LORD was in this place and I didn't know it. Preaching by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, January 19 2025
Kevin Makins returns to the pulpit to explore how we are shaped by the narratives around us. Preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary on January 12, 2025.
A staggering sermon on hope. Holds no punches, gives good news. A fitting end to our Advent series. Preached by Nina Schuurman-Drenth in the Eucharist Sanctuary, December 22, 2024.
Leanne Friesen, Executive Minister of the Canadian Baptists of Ontario and Quebec, brought a wide embracing, sensitive, and powerful word on Sunday reflecting on wombs, incarnation, and what it means to be in God. A must listen. Preached Sunday December 15th in the Eucharist Sanctuary.
Nina Schuurman-Drenth preaches her first sermon after a year of maternity leave. She offers a heartfelt reflection on grief, motherhood, desperation, and what it means to say "yes" to God. It's good to have her back in the pulpit. Preached on December 8, 2024 in the Eucharist Sanctuary.
Cindy Stover kicks off our Advent series by reflecting on Christmas music, liberation theology, and what Mary knew. Preached on December 1, 2024 in the Eucharist Sanctuary.
The Good Life in Babylon concludes on the other end of the Biblical cannon: The Book of Revelation, like the Book of Genesis, offers us a peek behind the curtain at the patterns that shape reality. This time we spot the inevitable end of the city, and it's rebirth due to Christ's faithfulness. It's a hopeful, terrifying ending to the greatest and grandest story in history. Sermon preached in the Eucharist Sanctuary by Kevin Makins on November 24 2024.…
Early Christianity was a distinctly urban movement. Why? Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, November 17 2024.
Our sermon series continues, not from the Sanctuary but the Study. There was another sermon recording failure this week but, honestly, sometimes it's best to let the sermon be the sermon and the podcast be the podcast. We enter into the back third of our sermon series "The Good Life in Babylon" with the other half of the coin. Yes, God makes space for faithful compromise, but there is also faithful suffering. Both are necessary. How do we live faithfully in the City? We hold the line. Recorded in the Eucharist Study, November 13 2024.…
Jesus shares the greatest of all commandments with his disciples, but even this can lead us into worry. Lord have mercy. Preached by Stephen Edwards in the Eucharist Sanctuary, November 3, 2024.
On building houses, planting gardens, having children, taking hot showers, making peace with the potential end of the world, and seeking God. Our sermon series "The Good Life in Babylon" takes a more hopeful turn. Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, October 27 2024.
Sometimes it feels impossible to do the right thing in Babylon. Thank God for grace. Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist sanctuary, October 20, 2024.
What does an ancient command to "tear down high places" offer to modern people attempting to live faithfully in the city? Our sermon series "The Good Life in Babylon" continues with reflections on advertising and idolatry. Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, October 13 2024.
We pause our sermon series for this Lectionary sermon. Tash Crozier, Eucharist children's coordinator and preaching guild member, brings the good news about how we receive the Kingdom of God.
Once again we're in podcast land. The sermon live recordings aren't working, but it's probably better this way. Two sermons: One is live, if you catch it you catch it, and one is here, at your convenience. Lord Willing, both words will accomplish what they are meant to accomplish. So for this week, our second "podcast exclusive," we look at the story of Exodus in light of our sermon series The Good Life in Babylon . This week: How to Leave a City Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, September 30 2024.…
This Sunday our podcast recording failed (which was so thematically fitting) and so we've had to once again fling this sermon into the heavens, with the hope it will be caught by a high place and sent back down towards the earth where you can listen to it, on your device, whenever it is convenient to you. All that to say, this week we're exploring the Tower of Babel, a story that reveals much to us about the shape of a city, the power that comes with height, and the cost of that power. Hopefully it will offer you a helpful framework for discerning our own times. Preached by Kevin Makins in the Eucharist Sanctuary, September 25 2024.…
Our Fall sermon sermon series "The Good Life in Babylon" will walk through the idea of "the City" in the Biblical imagination. These nine teachings will take us from Genesis to Revelation and offer us plenty to chew on as we seek to live faithfully in these strange times. "The First City" tells the story of Cain, who murders his brother and is banished from his homeland. It is an epic myth that lays at the foundation of the Biblical story, and one that offers us a powerful pattern through which we can understand the City in it's many manifestations. We hope you'll listen along to all nine sermons, and find yourself inspired to live a good life in your own place.…

Why are rents and house prices soaring? Will the cost of living crisis ever stop? Why is homelessness increasing? Is capitalism the best option? How is money created? Is land-lording a sin? What is inflation? Is interest a sin? What does the Bible say about money, debt, investing, and economics? Jared Alan Brock is an author, film-maker, and friend to many in the church of Hamilton. We were grateful to host him this summer for a free lecture on Christian Economics. His words are bold, courageous, and occasionally frightening. Pray, listen, and ready your heart to respond. About the Teacher Jared Alan Brock is the award-winning author of four books and director of several films including PBS's Redeeming Uncle Tom with Danny Glover. His writing has appeared in Esquire, USA Today, Huffington Post, Smithsonian, The Guardian, and TIME Magazine.…

Preaching Guild member Aaron Craig preaches his debut sermon at Eucharist. Despite being a part of our congregation since day one, and a regular worship leader and creative collaborator, this marks the first time Aaron preaches the gospel with words, from the pulpit (putting his MDiv from Wycliffe to good use). A note about the quality: This sermon had to be recorded using a phone, off the floor, so the audio quality isn't as solid as usual... but the sermon is still great.…

During Eastertide the Lectionary takes us into the book of Acts, where we get a brilliant picture of ideal Christianity community and a reminder of just how far from perfect we are.
Christ is Risen... and all the kids are with us to celebrate. Which means this sermon had to be accessible to a wide range of ears (and also pretty time effective). Thank God for balloons.
Kevin preaches on Palm Sunday, Jesus' loneliness, and where our friends cannot go.
