Traditional banks often lack personalized service, and local businesses struggle to find true partnership in financial institutions. Meanwhile, higher education faces scrutiny over relevance and ROI in a world where information is nearly free. Harry Allen helped launch Studio Bank to blend technology with high-touch service, fueled by community investment. At Belmont, he's applying the same entrepreneurial mindset to modernize university operations and embed practical learning experiences, like a one-of-a-kind partnership with Dolly Parton, into academia. In this episode, Harry L. Allen, co-founder of Studio Bank and now CFO at Belmont University, unpacks the bold vision behind launching a community-first bank in a city dominated by financial giants. He shares the leadership lessons that shaped his journey, how to lead through crisis, and why mentorship is the key to filling today's leadership vacuum. Key Takeaways Leveraging both financial and social capital creates a unique, community-first banking model. High-tech doesn't mean low-touch, Studio Bank fused innovation with personal relationships. Leadership means showing up, especially during crisis. Universities must shift from being information hubs to delivering real-world experience. Succession and mentorship are vital to cultivating the next generation of leaders. Chapters 00:00 Introduction to Harry L. Mind Gum is the odd little story of me, told one lurching story at a time. I am at best an eccentric. I almost went to Yale. My parents told me I should work at McDonald’s to pay for a car instead. I worked with people on a 1500-website project. I am rotting at a call center now. These are the brief glimpses of inner peace I have from being creative. If you like my debut, please share the sugar out of it. I have to be successful at even one thing in my life, and your mentioning me would be the highest compliment. Thank you. These are some of the songs that I have published at SFXRex.bandcamp.com plus a few more. Taste of an Ache, my favorite keyboard-based composition, is followed by a really bizarre reading of a 1924 business almanac. Insurance regulations by state will never sound the same again. After that, the suppressed ambient/drone How I Ache For You, then a 17-minute piece called Mother’s Last Minutes ends the show. Thank you for subscribing! UPDATE: Added the Beautiful Sickness track. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mindgum/support…

Mind Gum: An Eccentric’s Personal Podcast

Welcome to Mindgum, a collection of my odd little lifetime productions. This first episode was made with my old boss. He got sick and we had to part ways, but we started a YouTube channel called The Scambaiters. I did the sound editing as a sort of silent partner. Harold, old friend, the world needs to know what a cool cat you still are, and fans, I hope you can check out my new podcast. It’s going to be a rough start, but after no longer working for Harold, I have all the motivation in the world to do something fun like he always tried to do. My life is far from fun at this point, but I have long loved the idea of podcasting from afar, and just posting this bit of old times is enough to start my journey in podcasting. I promise you’ll hear me in the next one. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/mindgum/support…
