Our special guest this episode is Siedah Garrett songwriter of one of my favorite all time songs Michael Jackson’s ‘Man in the Mirror’. Siedah’s career as an artist and songwriter began 40 years ago. She’s written songs or performed backing vocals for countless legends like Madonna, The Pointer Sisters, Quincy Jones, Donna Summers and many others. As a solo artist you may know Siedah for her beautiful duet with Michael Jackson ‘I Just Can’t Stop Loving You’ off 1987’s BAD. She won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media for co-writing "Love You I Do" (performed by Jennifer Hudson) for the 2006 musical film, Dream Girls. This weeks silent giant is the 5 time Grammy award winner who assisted in recording, mixing and producing the Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’ album, engineer Bruce Swedien. From 1978-2000 he recorded every single Michael Jackson song! Yes, every song from 'Off The Wall', 'Thriller', 'Bad', 'Dangerous' and beyond was recorded by Bruce. He has recorded for some of the greatest artist of all time like Quincy Jones, Natalie Cole, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Mick Jagger, Paul McCartney, and countless others. You seriously have to read this mans wikipedia page to understand what he has contributed to American popular music. To put it simply Bruce is regarded as the greatest recording engineer of all-time. In this interview I flew down to his Florida home to chat about his upbringing in Minnesota, how he got into engineering, connecting with Quincy Jones, the makings of Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller’, and a whole lot more. Happy Flashback Friday! This week’s special guest is legendary hip-hop DJ, producer, and A&R DJ Clark Kent. Clark is a NYC icon and one of the pioneers of hip-hop. His career started as a DJ at age 14 which later lead him to become the main DJ for The Notorious BIG. He later went on to produce “Cashmere Thoughts”, “Coming of Age” and the infamous “Brooklyn’s Finest” with Biggie and Jay-Z on Jay’s classic debut album ‘Reasonable Doubt’. While DJing and producing he also landed a gig during this time as an A&R Atlantic records. In this interview Clark shares stories about his upbringing in Brooklyn, how he got into DJing and producing, landing his first A&R job, meeting Jay-Z for the first time, how he became Biggie’s DJ, introducing Dame Dash to Jay-Z, the making of my favorite Biggie song ‘The Sky’s’ The Limit’ and shares the intimate stories of being there the night Biggie was tragically shot and killed in LA in 1997. His career first started in 1967 when he became the assistant to Gerald Wexler who was at the time vice president of Atlantic records. Through his hard work and strong ear for music Jerry became the President of Atlantic records in 1974, making him the youngest person of any major record company in the recording industry to receive that title. During his helm as President he signed acts like Abba, The Blues Brothers, Genesis, TS Monk, Chic and Nile Rogers. In 1993 he also served as president of Michael Jackson’s label MJJ Music. Douglas has photographed some of the most iconic superstars in American popular culture like Audrey Hepburn, Judy Garland, Andy Warhol and many others. He also did the photography for some of the greatest films in movie history like ‘The Sound of Music’, Titanic, Butch Cassidy and The Sundance Kid and many others. Our special guest this episode is the 87 year old legendary American art director, designer and author George Lois. George is one the greatest advertising minds of the 20th century serving as Esquire magazine’s art director throughout the 1960’s and creating over 90 covers for the magazine. One of his famous covers of Esquire you may know is his depiction of Muhammad Ali as St. Sebastian. He also launched MTV with it’s iconic ‘I want my MTV’ campaign and created that advertising strategy that made Tommy Hilfiger a fashion household name. He even created the popular phrase ‘If you got it flaunt it’. George is also the author of ‘Damn Good Advice (For People With Talent)’ which is an amazing good that I highly recommend for people working in creative industries. Welcome to another episode of Silent Giants! Our special guest this episode is Vincent Paterson, the legendary choreographer for pop music and dance icon Michael Jackson. Vincent is responsible for creating some of MJ’s most iconic dance moves. He directed and choreographed Jackson's Bad tour as well as conceiving and choreographing " Smooth Criminal ". He choreographed other Jackson music videos, " Black or White ", " The Way You Make Me Feel ", " Dirty Diana ", " Speed Demon ", Michael’s Super Bowl Halftime show , and 1988 Grammys awards performance. He even invented the ‘crotch grab’. Vincent also in the famous fight scene from ‘Beat It’ and a zombie in ‘Thriller’. When you watch some of Michael’s most iconic work you’re really watching Michael Jackson dance like Vincent Paterson. Crazy to think about right? Vincent also worked with Madonna choreographing her iconic music videos for ‘Express Yourself’ and ‘Vogue’. Who doesn’t know Madonna’s famous vogue pose right? Vincent is such a mega silent giant that it was impossible for me to ask him everything in our hour long interview so I decided to focus the direction of the interview on Vincent’s life and experience working with Michael Jackson. Allee is also the songwriter of ‘I’ll Be There For You’ by The Rembrandts which became the theme song for the hit TV show ‘Friends’. She also co-wrote the Tony and Grammy -winning Broadway musical, The Color Purple . And currently a major motion picture based on the musical is currently being produced by Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey, Quincy Jones, and Scott Sanders. [5] In 2018 Allee was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
