Your Working Dog Radio Hosts, Eric @vanessk9 & Ted @ted_summers, are honored to sit down with combat veteran, Kelly Roby, who served over ten years in US Army Special Operations, as both a Ranger and a SMU operator, and played a crucial role in the SOFK9 community. The guys talk about handling dogs in the beginning of the GWOT. dogs he has worked, dogs they have lost, and the HUGE advantage of a large budget.
Roby began his career in 2nd Ranger Battalion, 75 Ranger Regiment. At 22 years old, he was the youngest soldier ever (at the time) to earn a place in the elite Tier One unit. As an SMU operator, Roby was involved in 350+ direct action missions in Iraq. He was awarded four Bronze Stars, two for valorous acts. During his time at Ft. Bragg, Roby had the additional privilege of being involved in early stages of the Special Operations Canine program which served as the leader for the implementation of the modern canine warrior in the Global War on Terror. Participating in the unit’s pilot canine program, Roby helped shape and evolve the Special Operations community’s tactical use of canines. When Roby left the military, he took his experience with Special Operations canines and helped to establish SOFK9 programs across all service branches.
So sit down, tune in, and learn a thing or two from the SOFK9 Extraordinaire himself, Kelly Roby. Follow him on IG at @Kroby70s
