Dr. Sahar Khamis discussed the latest rising wave of Islamophobia and its implications, especially in the aftermath of the Afghanistan crisis and the return of Taliban, and the recent 20th anniversary of 9/11. The discussion will tackle the questions of why, and how, this new wave of Islamophobia has been on the rise lately, both globally and in the United States; what are the manifestations and implications of this escalating trend; how are different Muslim, and non-Muslim, groups and orgnizations trying to combat it; and the double-edged sword effect of the media in this regard. with her guests, Mr. Shahed Amanullah and Dr. Amin Asfari Shahed Amanullah is Managing Director of Frost Capital and co-founder of Zakatify, a social impact fintech startup. From 2011 to 2014, Shahed served in President Barack Obama’s administration as Senior Advisor for Technology at the US Department of State, working under Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. He is the founder of Altmuslim, an online magazine with 2.5 million annual unique users, and served as its editor-in-chief for 10 years before its 2011 acquisition. In 1998, he created Zabihah, the world's first and largest Halal restaurant guide, with 10 million annual users and 750,000 app downloads. He serves as an advisor to the Muslim Caucus of America, which works to empower Muslim candidates for public office and educate the American Muslim electorate of their civic responsibilities, and is a founding board member of the Muslim Public Service Network, which since 1993 has graduated hundreds of Muslims interested in public service careers from its Washington, DC summer program. Dr. Amin Asfari is an Associate Professor in the Department of Criminal Justice at Wake Tech College, and a contributing faculty member at Campbell University in the Department of History, Political Science, and Criminal Justice. He is an interdisciplinary researcher whose areas of expertise are in public policy, criminal justice reform, prejudice and race, with an emphasis on Islamophobia. His ongoing scholarship seeks to understand the construction of Muslims as the “other,” and to identify the public policies that foster and legitimize this label. His forthcoming book Elders and Brothers: Jews and Muslims in the White Supremacist Imagination considers the role of conspiracism in mass shootings. He is also working to develop an integrated theoretical model that explains the process of “othering," which draws from various disciplines and methodological approaches to fine-tune our understanding of Islamophobia. His research contributes to the empirical understanding of American Muslims--a historically understudied group. The episode was broadcast: 24/9/2021 US Arab Radio can be heard on wnzk 690 AM, WDMV 700 AM, and WPAT 930 AM.
