He was suspected of murdering Isabella Griffiths, Adele Price and Father Anthony Crean. But while he was being held on remand in Brixton prison, Mackay told a fellow inmate he was locked up for murdering 11 people. He repeated this story to anyone that would listen including inquiring officers. Perhaps it was just a boastful claim. However, it was curious considering Mackay was awaiting trial for three murders.
