Approach the hiring process with the mindset of protecting your business. It is costly and painful to hire the wrong people and your business will pay a price. According to Jay, it is important to learn as much information about someone as possible before you make the decision to bring them onto your team. Don’t rush into hiring people; if someone makes a good first impression, sit on it and get to know them more. You want to understand not just the good, but also any issues that the prospect will bring to your firm.

Once your firm makes those good hiring decisions, your employees’ success depends on your firm’s leadership. Jay explains that it is critical for leadership to reduce distractions that can get in the way of employees’ success. Leadership should create one goal that all the employees commit to. Further, if you allow employees to have a say in how the firm is run, accountability will come naturally. At the end of the day, employees want to be respected, so if you create a culture based on respect, you will produce a high-performing team.
