Iran is in the midst of the largest women’s revolution in the history of the world. Comedian and actor Maz Jobrani, breaks down the protest in Iran, the murder that started it and how men in the West can be courageous allies from across the world. As an Iranian man raised in the US, Maz has a unique perspective on the differences between women’s movements in both countries and the similarities in the attitudes and policies that led to the loss of integral human rights for women during Iran's 1979 revolution.

An Overview of the Revolution in Iran

The protests in Iran erupted after the death of Mahsa Amini, who was visiting Tehran with family when “morality police” arrested her for allegedly violating hijab laws. She died from battery in police custody. Women and youth have been leading the protests, demanding social freedom and political change, gender equality and the end of the state’s regime.

The government has deployed violent tactics against protestors and while numbers are difficult to verify due to the lack of independent reporting in Iran, 15,915 protesters have been detained and 351 have been killed since the protests began, according to the lHuman Rights Activists News Agency.
