Sir Brian Urquhart. Wartime Paratrooper. Intelligence Officer. Disruptor. Diplomat. Peacekeeper.
He's a man who was never afraid to speak truth to power and did so with irreverence, dogged determination and unbreakable good humour. Sir Brian Urquhart was one of the founding members of the UN's Peacekeeping Division, having seen the visceral and appalling truths of war. From serious injury whilst jumping into Sicily, desperately trying to convince General 'Boy' Browning of the futility of Operation MARKET GARDEN to surviving mock executions in Africa, Urquhart never once blinked when faced with the tough choices.
I'm joined by my friend and hard boiled journalist John Sweeney. John built a career on the mean streets of Sheffield, North Nottinghamshire and the East Midlands, before working at the BBC including Panorama. His investigative journalism is both a beacon fire for truth and a searchlight for injustice. He's told stories from some of the most dangerous places on earth - from the 1990's Former Yugoslavian conflicts to locking eyes with cult leading Scientologists. John has recently dominated the podacting charts with the shocking and incredible 'HUNTING GHISLAINE' podcast from LBC (https://www.lbc.co.uk/hot-topics/hunting-ghislaine/hunting-ghislaine-maxwell-john-sweeney-podcast/). If you haven't checking it out yet, do so. It's electric, terrifying and as always from John, superbly crafted.
In this episode John and I discuss Sir Brian's early life, our own combat experiences, PTSD, dogs, the loss of family members, Urquhart's wartime exploits and his time in setting up the UN's peacekeeping organisation. As a trigger warning we discuss experiences during terrorism and combat situations and our feelings around them.
I loved this conversation with John. He's a brilliant journalist, superb storyteller and I instinctively knew he'd be a kindred spirit to those of a soliderly sense of humour. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
