The Supreme court ends nearly 50 years of women's abortion rights! Going forward, abortion rights will be determined by states, unless Congress acts. Already, nearly half of the states have or will pass laws that ban abortion while others have enacted strict measures regulating the procedure. The vote was 5-4 in favor of overturning Roe. In a joint dissenting opinion, Justices Stephen Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan heavily criticized the majority, closing: "With sorrow -- for this Court, but more, for the many millions of American women who have today lost a fundamental constitutional protection -- we dissent." Overturning Roe v. Wade on Friday could open the door for courts to overturn same-sex marriage, contraception, and other rights. It's already set off a debate among justices over whether overturning Roe puts those precedents in danger. Justice Clarence Thomas opened the floodgates for all sorts of gun safety laws to be challenged in federal court. Thomas changed the test courts are to use when analyzing the constitutionality of such regulations. Only firearm regulations that are "consistent with this Nation's historical tradition" comply with Second Amendment's protections, he wrote, in an assertion that puts in jeopardy any restriction that does not have a historical parallel to the nation's founding.
