Yay Summer is almost here!!! With the weather getting warmer and summer approaching, a lot of military families are about to hit the road again. On the way to a new assignment, a new location, new adventures.

Moving can be extremely stressful. Especially for special needs kids. We as parents stress about finding a new house, finding new therapists, whether the current IEP will be accepted at the new school, items that get lost or broken during the move etc. But we know we’ll figure it out. For our kid however his or her world is upside down. Especially if you have a kid that is set in his or her way, thrives on routine, has a hard time making friends. Therefore episode 36 of the Special Needs Supermom podcast is packed with tips to make the next move as pleasant as possible for your special needs kid. From letting your kid pack a box by themselves to taking pictures of their current bedroom before it gets packed, so you can set their room up the exact same way in your new house.

Remember: if you stress, your kids stress. You can bet something will go wrong. Like not having a house ready for the following 6 weeks… or not finding a specialist nearby… fruit the movers packed which is now rotten, smelly and leaking on your favorite carpet… It sucks. But you’ll live. If you keep it cool, or treat it like an adventure, your kids will likely handle it the same way.

And yes, your kid is totally allowed to feel sad, or feel a bit scared. It is ok and totally normal to feel that way. Tell them that, and tell them you will miss your friends too, but are really happy that you are going on this new adventure together.

Good luck with your move and have your wine ready! You deserve it!

Ps. Have a great tip yourself that really helped your special needs kid with their move? Do share!
