Happy New Year! This week we talk about one of Raphael’s favorite holiday films. You know, for kids! 1994’s Coen Brothers and Sam Raimi teamup, THE HUDSUCKER PROXY. This throwback to the fast-talking, stylized films of the ‘30s and ‘40s have the Martinez’s divided. Raphael loves Jennifer Jason Leigh’s affected Mid-Atlantic accent, Raquel would rather be deaf. She would also rather watch any of the number of films that inspired HUDSUCKER, while Raphael appreciates it as a homage and his gateway to those films. Raquel also learns about the “magical negro” trope, and discusses the cultural/historical accuracy of the Moses character with Raphael. Raphael thinks this is a screwball noir, Raquel thinks Raphael is a screwball for thinking that because her Noir Sense wasn’t tingling. Raquel also waxes nostalgic about actually being there for the Hula Hoop craze! And everyone loves Tim Robbins! Lots of stuff covered, but this is still a short one, because time is money!

The Generation Splice is film podcast where retired psychologist Dr. Raquel Martinez, a Baby Boomer through and through, and her son Raphael Jose Martinez, a cranky Millenial punk rocker, former music journalist, and current film writer, discuss various films through the lens of their generation & personal experiences. Every week one host picks a film for the two of them to dissect and see if they can splice together the generation gap via their love of the movies.

Feel free to write to us! Give us some film suggestions at generationsplice@gmail.com or @gensplicepod on Twitter.
