This means that the division of the beats is a repeating sequence of 1 2 3 4, 1 2 3 4 etc... However, in the true spirit of rock and roll rebellion a lot of bands have defied this "rule" with massively successful songs with odd beat divisions (aka odd meter or odd time signatures) of 5/4 (1 2 3 4 5), 7/4 (1 2 3 4 5 6 7) and even mixed meter time signatures like 1 2 3 4 and 1 2 3 as an example.
