Sometimes opportunities in business can be hard to recognize. For every chance you don’t take, there’s a potential for a missed opportunity. A decision not to hear an offer could leave you feeling regret years later.
I’m thinking about Elon Musk's claim that at one point he offered to sell Tesla to Apple. Apparently, Tim Cook wouldn't take the meeting.
At the time, Tesla was developing the Model 3. Unfortunately, Tesla ran into massive manufacturing issues. They couldn't get the cars out quickly enough, and when they got them out, there were defects. He was running out of money, and he had overextended his cash due to the delays.
So, he had to look at the options. And he was looking to sell Tesla at one-tenth of its current market value. That is a HUGE bargain, and a massive missed opportunity. Apple has done lots of acquisitions and is cash rich. I wonder what Tim Cook was thinking in turning down one of the greatest opportunities in business?
That being said, how many of these Tim Cook moments have you had? I know I’ve had several; many of them I’ve come to regret.
The model 3 is now the best selling luxury car in the US. Imagine, to be able to buy such a successful company at one-tenth of the current market value. What an incredible missed opportunity.
It just goes to show that you’ve got to stay open to opportunities in business. You never know when the next one will come knocking.
