There are essentially three different scenarios when it comes to exiting employees. By knowing the differences between when someone leaves on good terms, and when terminating an employee makes sense, you’ll be able to respond in a way that is best for your business.
So, what are the different scenarios when someone comes to the end of their time in the business?
The first option is that you had a good employee. They were in line with your core values, and they're just moving on to different things. They have a notice period, and during that time they can add value to the company. This is the most common exit.
Then there's another option when terminating an employee. In this case, you've again got someone who’s not a bad person, but maybe they have access to sensitive information. Once they've made their decision to move on, they're moving on. You don't want to give them any more sensitive information. When exiting employees in this fashion, there could be a notice period where they're employed but don't have to come into the business. They also can't work for anyone else during that period.
Then you've got the third option. This is when an employee is made to leave immediately. This is an appropriate response when someone has been troublesome, or there's someone you're going to exit because they're not the right fit. Keeping them on during their notice period could actually be harmful to the business. They could have a negative influence on others. No goodbyes, they just leave.
When exiting employees, it’s important to know how to handle the situation. You don’t want to be caught off guard. Keeping these three scenarios in mind will make the process of terminating an employee much smoother.
