We Endure, Pt. 12—Qualifications for Care 1 Timothy 5:9-16 Christians HELP the helpless for God Once Paul instructed Timothy that elderly parents should be cared for by their own family, he describes the type of people the church should care for (1 Tim. 5:1-8). Timothy is to enroll (Gr. katalegō, ‘set down on a list’) widows that meet a certain criteria; being over 60, a faithful wife, a reputation for working hard raising children, being hospitable, and is devoted to serving others. This means these women were members of the church as they were known by their service and character. Membership matters! God’s heart is to show His care for the most vulnerable and destitute in the church as an example to the world. The church and every believer aren’t called to fill every need or finance every request. Just because someone doesn’t want to help themselves doesn’t mean they are helpless (2 Thess. 3:6-13). God’s money should be spent God’s way!
