In this episode Dr. Seymour focuses on the benefits of Stage 4 REM

  • Why it is so important
  • Ways that too much Noradrenaline (Norepinephrine) - adrenaline in the brain as well as Serotonin can inhibit REM
  • Additional ways you may be able to optimize your sleep and improve your overall health and quality of life – behaviorally
  • REM is rich in emotional processing
  • REM is the brains ways of integrating and making connections between the events of our lives
  • How the brain needs to get to stage 4 REM to edit previous information with new info
  • Memory consolidation
  • Fine motor muscle memory
  • Implications regarding the importance of REM and the mental health treatment, with an emphasis on PTSD
  • The importance of taking time to wind down at night before bed
  • Dr. Seymour prepares a creative narrative to explain how memories travel from short term-memory to long-term memory
  • Make sure you catch The Boring Bedtime Story Harmony the Hippo to help you go to sleep (and get to REM)
  • Implications for Creativity & Problem Solving (which is next week’s topic)
