The phone rang as I was pouring my second cup of coffee. It was a quiet morning, the kind where the air feels thick with memories you can’t quite place. I set the cup down and picked up the receiver.

“Archer? This is a friend of Harry Caldwell’s.”

I hadn’t heard that name in years. The last time I saw Harry, he was wearing a tux and a broken smile at some charity ball for men whose pockets were already lined with gold. That was before he disappeared from my life, and from Los Angeles, as far as I knew.

“What’s on your mind?” I asked.

There was a pause, then the voice on the other end softened. “Harry’s gone missing. I need you to find him.”

“People like Harry don’t just disappear,” I said, trying to gauge how much truth there was to this claim. “They slip away quietly, making sure no one follows.”

“He didn’t slip away. He was taken.”

That changed things.
