Text: Proverbs 13:9-10 (ESV)

9 The light of the righteous rejoices,

but the lamp of the wicked will be put out.

10 By insolence comes nothing but strife,

but with those who take advice is wisdom.

THE LIGHT OF THE RIGHTEOUS REJOICES

The ‘light’ refers to the illumination a person in the ancient Middle East had in his tent. If his oil lamp did not stay lit throughout the entire night, everything became completely dark. Similarly, the life of the wicked’s life is a lamp put out. His light will not stay lit forever. The wicked person will die and be surrounded by utter darkness (Prov 11:7). However, the life of the righteous is a lamp that keeps shining. He will live not only for a long time on earth but also throughout eternity (John 8:12). Whereas hell is described as a place of outer darkness for the wicked (Mat 8:12), heaven is described as a place of brilliant, dazzling light for the righteous. The Lord will be the light of the righteous in heaven. In fact, there will be no night or any need for the light or lamp like the sun (Rev 22:5).

Verse 10 mentions the ‘insolent’ person. It comes from a Hebrew verb that literally means "to boil." This suggests a kind of bubbling pride inside that refuses to learn anything from anybody (Prov 1:22; 12:15; 13:1). He is a contentious, know-it-all, egotistical individual exhibiting a superior attitude. He is quick to quarrel and unwilling to agree with anyone with a different view. Such persons are heavy on talks but accomplish nothing (Titus 3:9–11). He is self-deceived and is not wise.

What does this mean for us today? Paul warns us, saying, "Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight."[Rom 12:16] Let us not have a hardened heart. Let us have a sensitive heart to hear and obey the words of God. As the psalmist resolves,

“Your word is a lamp to my feet

and a light to my path.”[Psa 119:105]
