Ottawa has entered a legal battle over Enbridge's Line 5 pipeline that is an important energy source for Ontario and Quebec. The federal government has gone as far as to say that a shutdown of the pipeline would "harm" the relationship between Canada and the U.S. and be contravening to a 1977 treaty. Meanwhile, Enbridge is continuing operations of Line 5 against Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer's May 12 deadline for a shutdown.
