On June 25th 2025, in collaboration with Open Folk, we presented our first ever live interview event in Los Angeles. As Open Folk put it: "In These Lines is a live event where three artists each bring one song — not just to perform, but to explore. They sit down with Sofia Loporcaro, host of Before The Chorus, to talk about where the song came from, what it meant to write it, and what it still holds. Then they play it. Just the song, and the truth behind it." Before a song is released, a record is produced, or a chorus is written, the musicians that write them think. A lot. They live. A lot. And they feel. A LOT. Hosted by award-winning interviewer Sofia Loporcaro, Before the Chorus explores the genuine human experiences behind the music. Sofia’s deep knowledge of music and personal journey with mental health help her connect with artists on a meaningful level. This is a space where fans connect with artists, and listeners from all walks of life feel seen through the stories that shape the music we love. About the host: Sofia Loporcaro is an award-winning interviewer and radio host who’s spent over 8 years helping musicians share their stories. She’s hosted shows for Amazing Radio, and Transmission Roundhouse. Now on Before the Chorus, she’s had the chance to host guests like Glass Animals, Feist, Madison Cunningham, Mick Jenkins, & Ru Paul's Drag Race winner Shea Couleé. Learn more about your ad choices. I've chosen five of my favorite episodes (out of so many!) to share with listeners. This is the first one that came to mind as I've lost my ability to taste chocolate after a long bout with Covid in 2023. It's still a delight of an episode to listen to. * * * This episode is just a lovely chat and ramble with the spouse of one of my favorite people. Sebastian Polhill digs in with me about some of the subjects I could talk for ages about: world history, Roman history, development of society and language, and most important, food. Grab a snack and your favored beverage, y'all. You're going to be peckish by the end of this episode! * * * More about Sebastian: Sebastian was born and raised in a single-parent family - Mum and 3 brothers. After doing reasonably well at school and then university he joined the British Army as an Education Officer, reaching the rank of Major over a 17 year career. This was followed by his second career as a High School Teacher of Mathematics, teaching at a variety of schools in both the UK and the USA. He also took a 4-year sabbatical in the middle of this time to work in the construction industry as everything from labourer to site manager while he took a second bachelor's degree in Construction Management. Sebastian moved to the USA in order to marry his girlfriend of three years (refers to their relationship, not his girlfriend's age!) four-and-a-half years ago, following a two-year ordeal with the US Immigration Services, during which he was deported back to the UK twice! He's now working in his retirement gig, and living very happily back in the UK with his wife, Lynn, and her son, Brody. Support the show W ant more sweary goodness? Hiatus Replay - Therapy Info Series Fuck The Rules Podcast Orginally aired: 01/02/2024 One of my favorite people, a colleague,Lynn Polhill joins me to talk about her journey to working with teens. A genuine, kind, wicked smart, hilarious person and I'm also fortunate to be friends with her! More info about Lynn: "Lynn was born, the only daughter of sharecroppers, living rough in the hills of Tennessee... A BIO!!! Fuck that. I'm just me. Which is to say, no one particularly special or important or caught up in trying to make it so. I was born, and moved 5 times before leaving home the first time @ 14, then 3 more times before leaving home for good @ 16. I majored in Guidance & Counseling, graduated with a BA at the age of 20, and couldn't take myself seriously. I moved to NYC, learned some things, moved to South Carolina and learned more. Over the next 23 years I then began a parade of 12 moves that would cover 5 states, and offer a plethora of titles and experiences like no university can manage. Somewhere along the way I grew up a little, realized I needed to take my career seriously for my son's sake, and decided to get my MA in Marriage & Family Counseling so that I could legitimately claim to do what I'd been doing for 25 years, offering sage wisdom like a bubble gum wrapper could only aspire to produce. In 2016 I began working as a therapist with kids in the East Moline district, and in 2020 decided to take a chance on UTHS in making them an offer they couldn't refuse. I was contracted to be an independent therapist working full time as part of CoVId recovery attempts with the students there. Since then I've written many memos and emails, subsequently deleted, questioning why I chose that population, and offering not so sage advice on what to do with our current population of lost and lonely adolescents. I've been a sitting member of numerous disciplinary meetings, problem solving teams, risk assessment forums and after school clubs, all aimed at providing exactly what I've always wanted to do: Support and advocate for kids with their families and communities, while staying in the shade of their enthusiastic youth. Along the way I've made some friends, met some really amazing people and hopefully been able to effect the lives of kids and parents for the good.I've never followed a damn rule in my life, not because I was a Support the show W ant more sweary goodness? Hiatus Replay - Therapy Info Series Fuck The Rules Podcast Orginally aired: 12/05/2023 When you think about a sex therapist, do y'all bring to mind multiple films or shows that have the therapist sleeping with their clients? That's not a certified sex therapist. It's a work of storytelling that's not true to that specific therapy. I'm grateful to Michele that she gave me some of her free time to discuss what her experiences have been in the journey to being a certified sex therapist, work with clients and what she feels how this type of therapy helps clients. PLEASE NOTE: there are multiple topics discussed including frank sexual discussion. For more info on Michele: Michele LaReau-Alves is an LMHC, and AASECT certified sex therapist, working in private practice with couples and sexual issues. She worked in community mental health for 20 years where she started out addressing the complex struggles of children and families in the social services system. This led to a passion for working with the core unit of the family system, couples, and parents, who are instrumental in breaking the cycles of intergenerational trauma. Over the years she has cultivated an approach that reinforces the need for joy, pleasure, and a sense of wellbeing in life; and where mindfulness and wellness are foundational. Hiatus Replay! Season 3 Episode 8 Original air date: 03/07/2023 Music. For most persons it is all through their lives, celebrations, losses, just living. It reminds us of events, places, people, history, and who we are as individuals. I was lucky to grab my friend, Derek Fortin, former lead singer for The Dawn (among his other participation in several bands), to discuss how he sees music in his life while also being an RN and now a director in the medical world. And we also get into how music moves other humans, how it can express things we think, feel or live but we're unable to put it into what we feel are the right words. One of my favorite lyrics is from one of the songs by Paul Simon: My life's so common it disappears And sometimes even music Cannot substitute for tears - Cool, Cool River, album: The Rhythm of the Saints - released 1990 Music is a powerful medium to evoke serious emotions of joy, resignation, anger, love and/or sadness. Fuck The Rules Podcast Season 4 Episode 15 One of my favorite people, a colleague,Lynn Polhill joins me to talk about her journey to working with teens. Along the way I've made some friends, met some really amazing people and hopefully been able to effect the lives of kids and parents for the good.I've never followed a damn rule in my life, not because I was a rebel, but because I couldn't be bothered to ge Support the show W ant more sweary goodness? Fuck The Rules Podcast Season 4 Episode 11 When you think about a sex therapist, do y'all bring to mind multiple films or shows that have the therapist sleeping with their clients?
