In this episode of the Escape Diet Prison Podcast I share my top 10 ways to romance yourself.
1. Have a date with yourself.
Pick a fancy restaurant (one that you usually only go to with a love interest or your partner) and dress up. Wear a sexy dress, do your hair and put make up on. Even wear super sexy underwear.
2. Send yourself a postcard.
I love this because it makes me appreciate myself, makes me chuckle and smirk. And there’s nothing better than coming home to a surprise postcard with a few beautiful and kind words written on them.
You can go a step further and write yourself a letter of appreciation and forgiveness.
Put it in a beautiful envelope and send it to yourself. This will make it even more special.
3. Stand in front of the mirror and proudly proclaim,
“I love my body. I love my thighs, my hips and my tummy. I appreciate all the incredible things that my body allows me to do. I am perfect exactly the way I am”. For bonus points, do this naked.
4. Buy yourself a bouquet of flowers or pick yourself a bunch of flowers.
Flowers; I have a bit of a love-hate relationship with them. I never really notice them when they’re there, but when they’re not – especially in spring – it feels weird. I have grown to loooove tulips or sun flowers and buying myself a bouquet makes me feel appreciated and taken care of. Don’t wait for someone else to send you flowers, do it yourself and enjoy the dots of color in your home.
5. Be curious and listen to yourself.
Learn something new about yourself every day. What do you like? What fascinates you? If you were an animal which one would you be? If you were a superhero which one would you be?
Get to know yourself on a more intimate level than you’ve done before. Reduce all the noise of daily life, let go of all responsibilities for a few moments and simple get to know your core. You’ll be surprised at what you find out, I promise!
6. Be irresponsible.
You know the feeling of being in love, right? When you’re newly in love, all you care about is that one person that makes you so happy: you think about him all day long and nothing else seems to matter. Food, your job, your workouts, other friends, family, etc. nothing brings you that high that your boyfriend brings you. And this high makes you do some irresponsible things like, let’s say, get married after 6 weeks, spend more money than you should, skip work or other dates.
Well, you are your own biggest love, so it’s totally fine to be irresponsible in order to court yourself. Buy yourself a pair of new shoes, play hooky for a day to spend it outside with yourself, eat a few pieces of lemon cake and ditch your silly weight concerns. Etc. It’s OK to be irresponsible from time to time and HAVE FUN. Don’t take life too seriously, seriously.
7. Go on a hike with yourself.
Listen to music or an audiobook or simply listen to nature and observe it in all its glory.
8. Sign up for a brutally hard gym class.
This may not seem obvious to you and it may feel counterintuitive, but believe me, you’ll feel awesome after the class and you’ll discover amazing things about yourself.
9. Connect with your inner child: play with legos and color with pencils.
This’ll help you reconnect with your creative side and getting a bit silly will strengthen your self-confidence.
10. Do something you’ve always wanted to do.
What have you been dreaming of for most of your life? Have you always wanted to be a singer? Then do karaoke in a local pub. Have you always wanted to go to Thailand? Book a flight and do it. Have you always wanted to learn knitting? Sign up for a knitting class. Have you always wanted to speak Spanish? Start listening to podcasts or sign up for a class. The possibilities are endless.
BONUS TIP (had to add that to the list!): Smile at yourself.
Smiling at yourself is one of the easiest, yet most powerful ways of showing love to yourself. Some smile tips include smiling at yourself in the mirror instead of beating yourself up, smiling at yourself upon waking up to great the day in a positive way, smiling through your tears (the single most awesome thing to do when you feel sad) or smiling while doing work you don’t really want to do. A smile makes everything better and shows that you appreciate yourself on a whole new level.
