We will be discussing health-related vocabulary words with the nonprofit organization CCAP Across The Map, which focuses on women’s health, for the first two episodes of every month. Today, we will look at the words “birth control” and “pelvic exam.”

Birth Control

The phrase “birth control”, with “birth” spelled B-I-R-T-H, and “control” spelled C-O-N-T-R-O-L, refers to the control of the number of children using various methods that prevent pregnancy. Even though birth control is mainly used as a way of avoiding pregnancy, taking oral birth control specifically can also protect women from ovarian cancer. An example sentence is, “Using oral birth control can help cut the risk of ovarian cancer in half”.

Pelvic exam

The phrase “pelvic exam”, with “pelvic” spelled P-E-L-V-I-C and “exam” spelled E-X-A-M, is a test where a doctor looks at a female’s reproductive organs both outside and inside to look for diseases such as cancer. An example sentence is, “Katrina’s pelvic exam showed a large mass on her ovary so she had more tests done to determine cause and treatment”.
