Today we will look at the words “rare” and “type.”

The word “rare,” spelled R-A-R-E, is an adjective to describe something that is uncommon or distinctive. If something is “rare” because it is uncommon, it is something that if not found often. For example, a “rare toy” is one that is hard to find. Rare items often have greater value, or are worth more money. If something is “rare” because it is distinctive, it is marked by unusual quality or merit and has appeal. Often this means it is one of a kind.

A culinary, or relating to food, definition of “rare,” is to describe how a meat is cooked. If a meat is “rare,” it is cooked so that the inside is still red.

The word “type,” spelled T-Y-P-E, is a noun and a verb. As a noun, it has two meanings: a kind or print lettering. In the sentence, “There are four types of chocolates in the box,” the word “type” is used to say there are four kinds, or groups, of chocolates. A “type” of something is usually defined by a difference in color, quality, or other trait that sets the thing apart from those like it.

If the word “type” is used in the sentence, “I used Times New Roman font type for my essay,” then type means the printed letters on a document or paper. This may also be called “Typeface”

As a verb, the word “type” means the subject is writing something or entering something onto a computer, typewriter, or other device with letter-keys (or a keyboard). For example, “Jane types her essays on her computer because her tablet is not as comfortable.” Or, the verb “type” may be used to say the subject is identifying or sorting things into “types” (as in the noun).
