“In the world of film making, I’ve somehow found myself as a Director. One thing I’ve learned about this role is that it’s very important to surround yourself with key-role collaborators that you 100% trust in order to uphold your creative vision - and dare I say - make your creative vision even better than you imagined it, once it’s finally transformed into a physical, real-life set. In that very important role of Production Designer, whose task that is to do so, Keri Shewmaker is the person for me. My forever go-to collaborator that helps me ensure my creative set visions are fulfilled. Together, when working, we fit like a glove. But beyond being a collaborator, she’s more importantly: my friend. The kind of friend I can never stop talking to when we’re in each other’s presence. One of the first times we hung out was at a music video film festival in Oakland ( our video won by the way, we beat Shannon and The Clams’ video… just saying ) and we spent around 3 hours after the event had ended, in the cold, babbling to one another and having a great time by ourselves after everyone else had left. I always tell people that story when I talk about Keri and every time I’m around her, that’s the same vibe we return to - just two buds babbling on, talking shit, and enjoying each other’s company. But beyond being a friend and collaborator, she’s a fascinating person and I’m hyped to have her on the pod to talk about her life. Sit back and listen to Keri talk about growing up as rural kid in the California Delta, moving to San Francisco for college and graduating with a sociology degree, unexpectedly finding her way into working in the film industry, what she loves about set design, growing out of being a musician and growing into being a filmmaker, working on the No Vacation music videos “Yam Yam” and “Days”, directing the HXXS music video “Last Days of Magic”, her fascination with miniatures, and much, much more.
