Turn on cable news and listen closely. Soon you will notice the pundits repeating vicious sounding phrases. The phrases seem to hold a special power over those watching like a chant that unlocks hidden mysteries.
Phrases like “Law and Order”, “Thugs”, “Welfare Queen” aren’t harmless. They are coded invitations, Dog Whistles, that reinforce the racist caste system still lurking in our communities. As allies, you need to know how to decode these phrases so you can resist and rollback their power.
In this episode, we’ll explore how these Dog Whistles came about, how they are used today and three strategies you can use to defang and resist them.
