If you’re immunocompromised, you may wonder whether you should have a feline pet. You’ll want to talk to your physician, but here are some guidelines if you get the okay.
Adult cats are less likely than kittens to carry infections that can spread to people. Be sure your cat is fully vaccinated, neutered and negative for viruses that can increase their risk of catching infections.
You’ll want to keep your cat inside and off kitchen and bathroom surfaces and tables. Also, administer a monthly parasite preventative and — because cat scratches can spread certain infections — keep your buddy’s nails trimmed.
Diets should be cooked commercial food — no raw protein. If possible, have someone else clean the litter box, or wear gloves and a mask if you do it yourself. Finally, wash your hands after handling your cat, especially before eating.
