Matthew Plantagenet took his ancestral name from Hamelin de Warenne Plantagenet who's father was Geoffrey Plantagenet. Hamelin was the half-brother of King Henry II. Hamelin Plantagenet married the widow Isabel comte de Warenne, which is the customary designation for "Earl of Surrey". We kept the last name Warren ever since.
