TRANSCRIPT:
Hello everyone, my name is Shivika, and you are listening to the English ClAIRSTONE Podcast, where you can build the cornerstone of your English vocabulary! For all the new listeners, welcome to the community, and for our regulars, hello again! Before we start, I will remind you that we upload new episodes twice a week and there are transcripts for each podcast episode in English, Arabic, and Spanish at our website projectclair.org, so go check that out if you want to follow along!

Today we will be looking at the words apart and intend

The word apart is spelled as A-P-A-R-T. Apart can be used as an adverb meaning, a little distance away from something or away from one another. It can be used for distance, for example, ‘New york and Massechucetts are 200 miles apart. In this sentence, apart is used as a way to say they are a certain distance away from each other. Apart can also be used for feelings or non-materialistic things such as, ‘Trinity likes to keep her family drama apart from her work life.’ In this sentence, apart is used a s a way to say that she likes to separate her family drama and work life.

The word intend is spelled as I-N-T-E-N-D. Intend is always used as a verb so the form of it can change depending on the tense of the subject. Intend can mean having a specific course of action for a purpose. A synonym can be plan. An example of a sentence can be, “Nathan intended to work for two hours on his English essay.’ In the sentence, intended is used to say that he planned to work. Intend can also mean something is designed for a certain thing or someone is destined for a particular purpose. For example, ‘This condo was intended for two people to live in.” It means that the condo was designed with the purpose of housing two people. Another sentence can be, ‘Ralph was intended to be a mathematician because he was always really good at math’ Intended in the context of this sentence means that Ralph was meant to be a mathematician because of his success in that subject.
