Most of us have a competitive spirit to some degree. We compete in games, sports, and work, among friends, neighbors, family members, and strangers. Our economy is based on competition, and we encourage our children to prepare for their roles in society by being competitive in nearly everything they do. Even in our spare time, playing games or participating in hobbies, we are often competitive. This mentality is pervasive and generally accepted as a good trait.

This week we reflect on the passage in the Gospel of Mark that describes the competitive nature of the first disciples of Christ. While traveling between towns, they had gotten into an argument about who was greatest among them. When confronted by Jesus at their destination, they were afraid to admit what they were talking about, probably intuitively knowing they were acting in a way that was inconsistent with Jesus’s teaching. Jesus tells them whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all. Interestingly, Jesus appeals to their competitive spirit by encouraging them to seek out the first position but explains it will require them being last. It begs the question, what does it mean to be first or last?
