Part 1: The City of Santa Barbara, CA plans to completely renovate the Ortega Park in what is called the Ortega Park Restoration project. The “Project,” however, in its present composite will result in the desecration and permanent loss of culturally significant public murals as well culturally significant spaces. Guest: Mark Moses Alvarado, founder of the One Community Bridge Project, a culturally specific non-profit organization, joins us to discuss the work he and the One Community Bridge Project, are presently engaged in as part of the Ortega Park Rescue Project to save and preserve numerous public and cultural arts (i.e. the Ortega Park murals) as well as protecting culturally significant sites in the heart of the Chumash Nation. Part 2: Indigenous peoples and their respective First Nations are on the frontlines of Mother Earth struggling and resisting against violent forms of colonialism including nefarious manifestations of ecocides, democides, genocides, and the full dominant spectrum of “cides”. Today’s guest provides in-depth update on Mexican government continuous militarized land thefts and refusing Indigenous Mayan people right to education in rural, Indigenous areas and nations, plus more. Guest: Richard Stahler-Sholk, Professor of Political Science at Eastern Michigan University, joins us for this segment of the program to discuss how Mayan Indigenous peoples have been mobilizing and resisting the Mexican governments continuous military actions in stealing and dispossessing Mayan peoples lands throughout Chiapas and Jalisco as well as how Indigenous peoples are presently being denied a basic right to education, plus more.
